Chapter Song: How to Save a Life by The Fray

The Boy on the Beach

I padded threw the sand on guard duty. Stupid Jake got a weird sponge bob song in my head, I don’t even know what the heck a ‘sponge bob’ is! But he still refused to stop singing that damned song! ‘I’m on patrol, I’m on patrol.” it refused to go away.

I jumped on top of a bolder that was on the beach, just standing there for a minute, looking at the forest that‘d been my home since before I could remember. But then I saw a dark shape on the other side of the beach. I couldn’t remember it being there before, so I got up and started to walk over.

As it took shape I started to run, it was a body. This is the reason there’s patrols, we hadn’t had a wash up in nearly a year. Since Seth showed up.

I got to the body in the next minute. He was a boy about my age, I put my head on his chest looking for a heart beat, there was one. So I put my nose in the sand and heaved him onto my back, there was nothing else I could do until he woke up, and I had to get him to Carlisle.

I walked with him on my back to the path I’d come from. It was the one that got closet to the lake, there wasn't really another choice.

For the next five minutes I walked threw the forest wondering what this kid would be. The island couldn’t handle another male wolf, there’s just no way, there’s seven of them not including the girls. Alice and Jasper were the only snake shape-shifters. If he’s a bear Len would be all over him she was the only available bear and it had to be lonely with the other two couples, Angela and Ben, and Emmett and Rosalie.

If he was a lion, Jessica, Lauren and Tanya would come back to the pack. That could never be a good thing. Those brats would never understand the order of command. Plus there hasn’t been a male lion in years. Thank God! It’s the only thing that’s keeping chief from making me partake in the coming of age ceremony.

The boy on my back stirred, and I jumped realizing that if he woke up on a lions back he might be a little…freaked? I found a small spot, and laid him on the ground, changing to my human form. I dug a quick fire hole and got some twigs, he’d be freezing, his clothes were still wet.

I only had to wait a few minutes for him to wake up. He blinked stretched and started shivering, almost immediately I threw more wood onto the fire. Could not let him die I’d never get it off my conscience.

He jumped as the wood hit the fire, and looked up at me. He just stared, which was to be suspected, waking up to a stranger standing over you.

I raised one of my eyebrows, and asked “What?”

“W-who are you?” He asked.

“My names Bella I live on this island,” I said to him nodding around at the jungle. He jumped again looking around.

“Do you know what happened? I was on a cruise with my parents, I can’t really remember what happened.” He asked me.

I shrugged, “ I’ve no idea. The most probable causes are you fell over board or the boat sunk. But just because it sunk doesn’t mean your parents aren’t alive. Only certain people can wash up on the beach.” I said looking around. Then asked “How cold are you can we keep moving? I need to get you to Carlisle.”

“Wait how do I get off this island? To find out where my parents ended up.” He asked extremely worried.

“Look, I’ve been on this island since I was four, I don’t know if you’ll get off, though Lauren and Jessica were working on a way off, but I wouldn’t suggest that,” I said looking down at him. I was lucky I can’t remember what happened to get me here. “If it makes you feel better, most of the ship wrecks that end up here find a good life, hell if you’re a wolf you’ll have seven brothers,” I said with a laugh. Then I got up and walked down the path heading for the lake.

“Wait for me!” He shouted sounding exasperated.

“You know you never told me your name,” I said when he caught up.
