Chapter Song: Hit Me With Your Best Shot, by Pat Benatar

“Cool,” he said looking at me.

“Wait, wait, wait, you’re seriously okay with this?” I asked looking at him. Was he crazy?

“Yeah why wouldn’t I be?” He asked looking confused.

“Some people don’t take it so well,” Carlisle said sighing. He’d had to calm down many people freaking out over the fact they could become an animal. “You must have questions, and since Bella’s a lion too she’d be best to answer. Oh and Bella, you can tell him if he asks.” he said leaving the room.

“Wait don’t put this on me,” I yelled after him. I didn’t want to answer this kids questions. I’d be there all night.

I looked back at Edward, who was grinning. “Finally, I get some questions answered.” he said with a laugh.

“Right, hit me with your best shot,” I said taking another bite of my apple.

“When am I going to morph, and does it hurt?”

“That’s your best shot? Morphing happens at different times for different people, and its uncomfortable the first time but when you get used to it its like riding a bike.” I said.

“How’d you morph?”

“I woke up came down stairs, tried to talk to Carlisle, ended up growling. I didn’t even notice it.” I said laughing.

“What happened to land you on his island?” he asked laughing slightly.

“I don’t remember I was four.” I said with a bit of a smile. Sometimes it hurt that I didn’t remember my parents, but I got over it.

“Sorry,” he said.

“No big.”

“How’s being a lion going to be?” He asked.

“For you…annoying.” I said thinking of the Bitches trio.

“There aren’t a lot of male morphs, for lions. Its possible that three girls that left the pack a while ago, will come back to try and convince you to be their mate.” I said awkwardly. Who was I kidding? Those three were going to be all over them before he could blink, as soon as he was welcomed into the pack.

“Yikes that bad?”

“Worse, I make it sound better then it seems, they actually got kicked out of the pride. Exiled if you will.” I said.

“What’d they do?” he asked probably afraid of what would happen if he did something as bad as they did.

“Challenged the Queen and her apprentice,” I said quickly hoping to avoid the next question, that was sure to come.

“Who’re they?” he asked. See told you.

“The Queen is the Chief’s wife Nefia,” I said.

“And the apprentice?”

“No one,” I said. I seriously needed to avoid that question, it wouldn’t be pleasant, for me at least, if he found out.

“Obviously someone if they got kicked out for challenging her.”

“Well yes, but if she’d lost then she’d be the one banished. “ I said with a laugh, “Good thing she kicked their asses.”

“I don’t get it.” He said.

“I knew I’d have to explain it. There aren’t a lot of women in the pride, its why there are more female lion morph’s its also why they’re more important. The males actually fight it out for the mate they would like, and the strongest is the one is the one the girl is stuck with. And the strongest Female is the queen, then the next generation of females battle it out, and whoever wins that fight is the apprentice. Who will become Queen a year after her coming of age ceremony. To make sure that it’s always the strongest females in those to positions if other females in the pride think they’re stronger they’re permitted to challenge them, whoever loses, is banished, whoever wins, gets the position.” I said. With such a long winded explanation you’d think that would make more sense.

“Have you done any of that?”

“No,” I said only slightly lying. “I haven’t even had the coming of age ceremony.”

“It’s only a month away,” Esme said coming into the kitchen, “and two months, until you choose your mate.”

“Choose,” I scoffed, “I don’t get a choice. Especially since I’m…” I trailed off I’d almost said the bit I was trying to hide. And I was doing so well.

“You haven’t told him?” Esme asked, chopping up some fruit for dinner.

“No and I’m not going to,” I said looking at her.

“Sure, Hun,” she says still chopping fruit. A large phoenix flew through the window and landed on the sill, with a rabbit in one of its claws, morphing, Carlisle stood with the rabbit in his hand.

“Dinner,” he said taking a pan from Esme. I heard a thump, and turned around to see Edward on the ground.

“Dude you have to get used to the morphing thing,” I said shaking my head.
