I sat in my room. Bella had died when she jumped from a cliff after we revealed to Edward that we were seeing each other. We had all changed so much. Alice hardly ever went shopping. Emmett never smiled, never laughed. Edward hid in his room. Esme was in mourning for her daughter. Carlisle worked harder then ever, as if he was trying to make up for Bella’s death by saving others. Rosalie was quieter, less vain. And I…I focused only on hunting. Other then that, I was like Edward. I hid away from the world. I was surprised that I was still with the others. Alice wouldn’t talk to me and Edward refused to acknowledge my existence. In his opinion, I was the reason Bella had jumped. I often thought about that fateful day.

“NO!” Yelled Edward as Bella hurtled over the edge towards the black water beneath. Her body was tossed about in the wind like a rag doll as she fell. Edward and I darted to the edge as she plummeted. Her body disappeared beneath the waves. I jumped after her, as did Edward. We hit the water and swam down. There was no sign of Bella’s body. We searched for ages but eventually we had to leave. I stood on the edge of the cliff that night and peered down at the murky water, thinking of Bella.

Bella’s funeral had been a trial on all of us. Edward had nearly killed me afterwards.

“You’ve got a nerve! It’s your fault she jumped in the first place! Why the hell are you here?” he shouted. He jumped at me and punched me. I didn’t struggle, just let him punch me. I slowly calmed him down.

“Don’t you dare fiddle with my emotions Jasper! Get lost!” he jumped off me.

“It’s not my fault. You know, love is unconditional! Just accept that I loved her too, Edward” I wasn’t angry at him. If I was him, I would have blamed me too.

I spent most of my days in the past. It was better then the present with all the sorrow in the house. The first time I smelt her.

I was walking past a small group of humans, heading towards the cafeteria. Suddenly, the most fragrant scent assailed me. Ouch. It hurt to inhale it. I hurried away from the deadly scent, feeling the venom in my mouth.

The first time I talked to her.

“Are you okay? “ I asked. She jumped and I could hear her heart racing. She hadn’t noticed me standing here.

“Where are you?” she asked, frightened. I stepped forward into the dappled light.

“Right here” she turned. Then her eyes narrowed.

“You’re Edward’s brother, aren’t you?”

“Yes. Jasper Hale at your service” I did a mock bow and she blushed. Oh, the sight was so beautiful.

Life was hardly bearable anymore. I curled up on my sofa and put on my I Pod. The music was just background noise. I sighed. I got up and walked downstairs.

“I’m going for a walk,” I said. Carlisle nodded. We had moved away from Forks right after Bella’s funeral. I walked down the forest path, in no particular direction, never slowing, never stopping. Not knowing what I was looking for. Until I found it.
