"Who are you?" I asked.

"I have many names. Usha, Hecate, Vritra, Pandora, Jezebel, Satana. But you can call me Lamia"

"Who are you, I mean really?"

"I am the nightmares of children, the scourge of sinners and the feeling of being watched"

"You're not going to give me an answer are you?"

"That depends on what you mean on an answer"

"Okay, why are we here?"

"You are here to pay for your crimes Jasper. I have nothing against Edward. He can leave any time he feels"

"Where are Bella and Alice?"

"Follow me and you shall see" I followed her reluctantly, as did Edward (not that he had much choice, being chained up and all). She pushed open a door, which felt strangely hot. We were led into a large stone cavern with a pit of fire in the centre of the stone ‘bowl'. There was a wooded platform in the middle with a beam above it. Suspended from the beam, with their feet barely touching the surface, was Alice and Bella. A dog snarled at us. The man holding its chain looked astonished.

"Why are there humans in our presence?"

"We are vampires," I said.

"That matters not. You are from the human realm and have no place in the land of the dead," he said.

"Do you dare question my authority Ahriman? When it was I who removed you from eternal damnation and gave you new life?"

"No ma'am" he said.

"Good" she led Edward and me to a platform on the edge of the fiery pit.

"Jasper. You have committed crime. You have been ungrateful for what you had and sought more. Alice was created as your perfect match but you stole Edward's from him. We have decided instead of tormenting you for your decisions simply to get you to choose. One of the girls will fall to their death. Your choice. Bella or Alice"

"Can't I save both of them? Kill myself?"

"No. it is time for you to learn that crimes will be punished. This is your punishment and you must accept it"

"But you're hurting them! Not me!"

"If you really care about them, killing them will hurt you. There are much worse things then death Jasper"

"Jasper! Do what you feel is right in your heart!" Alice shouted.

"Jasper! Save me! I've loved you and will always love you! I never abandoned you, I just found a way we could be together more conveniently" something stirred in my memory. Bella never asked for help. She was selfless.

"How do I save one?" I asked. Lamia signalled to a person on the other side of the pit who pushed a leaver. The platform Bella and Alice were standing on retracted into the fire, leaving Bella and Alice hanging from the beam.

"You must cross the beam and sever a rope. If you don't within two minutes, the hellhounds will be set on you. You will not survive and your three friends will be thrown to their deaths" I gulped and climbed onto the beam. I balanced and started to cross the beam. I reached the point where Bella and Alice were hanging.

"Jasper!" gasped Bella "Help!" I gritted my teeth and took hold of Alice's rope. Alice looked eyes with me and Bella said "Thank you! I knew you wouldn't abandon me" but instead of slicing through Alice's rope, I merely took her hand and squeezed. Before Bella could blink, I slashed my sharp nail through her rope.

"NO!" shouted Edward. I pulled Alice up and we returned to the side. I surveyed the pit.

"How could you do that to Bella? It's your fault she's in this mess in the first place!" shouted Edward.

I turned and said simply "It wasn't Bella"
