It was all my fault. I thought that as I heard my family's screams, echoing round the chasm. I hung my head. I was chained to a pole on a rocky ledge, overlooking my creation.

I'd read in a book of Greek myths about Prometheus who was punished for giving fire to the humans. He was chained on a cliff-side and an eagle was sent down by Zeus to pluck out his liver and eat it. And every night the liver grew back and each day the eagle returned. Alice's torment was much the same.

She was hung from a beam above a pit. Huge hounds were beneath. They fought with each other, leaping up occasionally to rip apiece off. But the dogs where taken away after a period of time and Alice's tiny body reformed.

I turned my head to the other side of the pit where Edward was. His torment was different. He was lying on the side of a wheel. The wheel would roll backwards and forwards over huge iron spikes. He cried out in pain when the spikes should have just broken. It was like science and time has no place here. Every cry of pain tore my heart in a way I couldn't describe. I tried to close my eyes but Lamia appeared and wrenched them open.

"Jasper, when are you going to learn? Your decisions put others in jeopardy" she clicked her fingers and a demon approached Edward with a burning stick. The flames weren't like normal flames. They crackled but looked like hands, grabbing at anything it could. The demon placed the torch on Edward's skin and his cries intensified.

"Please!" I cried out, no longer able to bear it "Let them go! You can have me! You can do whatever you want to me, just let them go!"

"But Jasper, I already have you" she said, delicately stroking my face.

"No...please" I begged. She smiled.

"Ahriman, Sutekh, Vritra release the prisoners" startled cries from the cavern.

"NOW!" she shouted, her voice sounded like a furious tornado, a fierce forest fire, an avalanche, a tsunami. Alice and Edward were led up to where we stood.

"I will give you once last chance Jasper. I will set you three challenges. For each challenge you pass, you can save one of your party"

"What happens if I fail?"

"All left here, will remain here for eternity, longer then I had planned for those two. What is your decision? Risk it and possibly save or damn your family? Or allow them to suffer for their time before dying?" I had to try.

"I'll do it," I said. I'm sorry Alice, Edward; I may have doomed us all.

"Perfect. Jasper, are you aware of the twelve labours of Hercules?"

"Yes. He had to do them to get over killing his family"

"Do you know what they were?"

"Yes, do I have to list them?"

"Please do. I'm interested to know of your Greek historical knowledge"

"It's just a myth"

"In a myth lie remnants of truth"

"Fine, he had to slay the Nemean lion, the nine headed Leraean Hydra. Capture the golden Hind of Artemis and the Erymanthian Boar. Then he had to clean the Augean stables in a single day, slay the Stymphalian Birds, and capture the Cretan bull. For the eight one he had to steal the flesh eating Mares of Diomedes, then obtain the girdle of the Amazon Queen, the cattle of the Monster Geryon. Err...Steal the apples of the Hesperides and capture Cerberus, Hades pet dog. Is that right?" I wasn't sure I liked where this was heading.

"Well, for your first task, I think I want you to slay that dog"

"Why?"

"It's being a pest. I can't house train it," she said, a mocking smile on her face.

"Isn't that Hades dog?"

"Hades never was god of the underworld. I have always been in charge but he did reside down here for a short while when I existed under the name Persephone. I have always been there through history, challenging the damned"

"So, all I have to do is kill Cerberus and one of us can go free?"

"Not quiet. Another fact, but not quite so well known is that Cerberus was one of eight children of Echidna and Typhon"

"You're kidding"

"No. His siblings are neither as ferocious nor as cunning as he is but they are quite a force. However, I only have two. And I don't particularly want to hunt the others down. Two will be sufficient. Cerberus and Orthrus are both dogs and they will serve well. Besides, that idiot Hercules already killed two. Are you still willing to do it? This will be your last chance to back out. You could doom your family as well as you"

One look into Alice's frightened face and I had my answer.

"I'll do it"
