I woke this time to the feeling of someone shaking my shoulder. I lifted my head and blinked blearily, still half asleep.

“Bella? Bella, darling, you have to wake up now.”

It was Edward. I smiled.

“I had the most horrible dream…Charlie—” I stopped abruptly as everything came rushing back. “Charlie…he—he’s really gone then?”

A miserable look entered Edward’s eyes at my words. He nodded. “I’m sorry, Bella.” I nodded as I looked around, accepting the inevitable but still grieving deep down. I was going to let everything out later. There were more important things right now, and everyone needed me coherent. “Where are we?”

He smiled in relief at my slight return to sanity. “A hotel in L.A. Everyone’s been waiting for you to wake up so we can discuss what we’re going to do, but we really can’t wait much longer.”

“Why didn’t you wake me up?” I didn’t see the point in letting me sleep. We were being basically stalked by insane vampires and I had been taking a nap!

“Bella, you were exhausted. Add that to losing…him…and…well, you really needed to rest.”

I sighed. “Okay…let’s go. I want to see her dead.”

Edward nodded in agreement. “Me, too.”

I got up out of the bed and followed him out of the unfamiliar room. As we walked out the door, I gasped at the sheer luxury of the suite. I shouldn’t have been surprised, really. They were the Cullens. The rich Cullens. I glanced up at Edward and tried for some humor.

“How do you know I’m not just dating you for your money?”

He smiled at me. “Just because I can’t read your mind doesn’t mean I can’t read your actions. And besides, how could you not love me? I seem to recall you saying…what was it…I dazzle people. Do I still dazzle you?”

I groaned. “For one, you weren’t supposed to remember that. And two, if you didn’t, I wouldn’t come close to fainting every time you kiss me.”

The whole conversation had been carried on right outside the door, but we didn’t have time for more joking. I saw the whole family spread out in the spacious living room, everyone with a solemn look on their faces. Esme was the first to look up.

“Bella, dear, how are you feeling?” As she spoke, Alice also looked up.

“Bella! I’m so sorry, about, you know…everything.” She came in that graceful, cat-like gait of hers to give me a hug.

“Really, I’m fine. I’m just…trying to focus on other things right now.” I glanced at Carlisle. “So…Victoria’s back then?” At the name, I heard a small growl come from deep in Edward’s chest. Carlisle nodded gravely.

“Yes. We need to figure out what we’re going to do about this turn of events. Both of you, come have a seat.” We came. “Edward, we really have to discuss the subject that you don’t really like all that much. It seems much closer to happening now than it did before.” Edward hissed at that. I could feel his displeasure radiating off his skin. I touched his arm, and he calmed down.

Carlisle spoke again. “Turning her is a plausible way to get out of this—we’re not near La Push, the Volturi will be happy, and she’ll have better chance with Victoria, if it ever comes down to that. No, Edward, think about it.”—he had hissed again—“It’s the best solution to all of this. We’ve all conferred, and it’s come down to this: Bella, you will be turned, for your own safety. Edward, either you or I will do it.”

Edward growled. “Safety! How will she be safe? What if I lost control? What then? Would she still be safe?”

“Edward, calm yourself. If you did, you would think about this better, and see the reasoning.” Suddenly, Edward whipped his head towards Jasper.

“Damn it, Jasper! If I wanted you to mess with my damn emotions, I would ask!”

“Well then, now you know how we might feel when you read our minds. Carlisle’s right. Listen to him when you’re calm,” Jasper replied.

Edward snarled. “I am listening. My answer is no. You should all already know this.”

I couldn’t hold it in. They were talking about me as if I wasn’t even there! “Edward! This isn’t just about you! This is about the safety of your whole family. The family that my mortality is putting in huge danger! Listen to Carlisle. He’s right. Now, are you going to do it, or is he?”

His head bowed at my words. “You—you agreed to marry me, right?” I nodded, confused at the abrupt change of topic. “I…made you a promise…” I smiled suddenly.

“Yes, Edward. You did. Will you follow through with it?”

He nodded. “We are getting married first though. Tomorrow.”

I completely agreed. “Definitely.”

The rest of his family looked on in total confusion. I looked at each of them. “Edward made me a deal…If I agreed to marry him, he would change me. I agreed.”

Alice jumped up. “You’re getting married? Really? This is great! Rose has plenty of dresses, being the wedding fanatic she is, and you guys are the same size, if not the same height. We’ll just have to hem it a little, right, Rose?”

Rosalie smiled at me, possibly one of the first real, genuine smiles I’d ever seen from her. “Yes. I absolutely love weddings! Well, it’s better if they’re my own, but…I’ll just take what I can get.”

I was shocked. Was she just nice to me? I made my face blank, hiding my reaction. “Thanks, Rosalie.”

Carlisle finally spoke. “I can perform the ceremony. I believe Edward told you the story, Bella. I am licensed, you know.”

Edward and I smiled in unison. “Thanks, Carlisle,” I said. Edward reached for my hand. “You know,” he said. “I’ve kind of been…saving something since I asked you, in hopes you’d say yes.” I looked at him quizzically.

“What do you mean?”

He got up and then knelt in front of me on one knee. “Bella, I realize that I didn’t exactly ask you properly before, as it was more of an ultimatum than anything. To atone for that…Bella, dearest, my love, will you marry me?” With that he reached into his pocket and brought out a small, black, square box. He opened it, and I gasped. There, on a white gold band, rested a gorgeous princess cut topaz.

“Holy crow! That’s…that’s huge!” I said incredulously, jumping to my feet. He followed me up. The rest of the family had tactfully left the room when he had knelt down.

“Bella? That’s not normally the reaction to that kind of question…”

I gaped at him. “You actually doubt my answer? Seriously? Edward, of course it’s a yes!” I’m afraid I sort of leaped at him. Fortunately, he caught me, preventing any accidents. He swung me around a few times, set me down, and kissed me. Of course, I let myself go again, but this time, he didn’t stop. The kiss, this time, went on, and on, and on. The first real kiss since everything had started. Finally, inevitably, he drew back.

“Uh-uh,” he said, “too dangerous. No more until after the wedding.” That last was said with a huge grin.

“Have I told you I loved you yet today?” I asked. He shook his head, still smiling my favorite, crooked grin. “I love you,” I whispered, reaching up to kiss him again, softly, slowly. He groaned. This time, I broke it off.

“Uh-uh,” I grinned, repeating his words, “too dangerous. Wait until after the wedding.” He laughed softly, but the solitude was not to last. The door from a bedroom flew open and Alice, Rosalie, Jasper, and Emmett all poured out. Alice came at me and swept me in a hug, and Rosalie followed close after. Jasper and Emmett veered towards Edward, exchanging “manly” hugs and taking turns punching each other in the arm.

Then, everyone switched, and Alice and Rosalie congratulated Edward while Jasper and Emmett hugged me. Suddenly, I was pushed towards Edward, who swept me up into his arms again and kissed me, passionately, thoroughly. I was lost. Then I fainted.

When I woke up, I was lying in the same bed as before. Edward was beside me, amusement in his eyes. “I thought we were over you fainting when I kissed you.”

“Yeah, well, I thought we discussed this already. Remember? You still dazzle me. By the way, how long have I been out?”

“Not that long. But, it’s nighttime. You should get some beauty sleep. You’re getting married tomorrow, remember? Not that you need beauty sleep. You’re always gorgeous, no matter what.”

I smiled. “Nice save. I’m not tired. I spent most of the day sleeping, don’t forget. Let’s keep talking. I love hearing your voice.”

“Oh, you do, do you? That’s good, because you’ll be hearing it for a long time. I love you, you know.”

“I know. I love you, too. I just wish…Charlie…c—could be there for the wedding…,” I said, trembling and starting to cry.

Edward immediately folded me more closely into his granite arms. “I know, dearest, I know. I wish that too. We will get Victoria for this, I promise you.”

I must have been way more tired than I thought, because I dropped off to sleep crying, wrapped up in Edward’s loving, gentle arms.
