The wooden doors swung open with a loud crack. Felix reached for my hand which I instinctively slapped away. How dare he try to show some ungodly affection towards me! I rolled my eyes as he put his hand on the small of my back to usher me forward. Dawn squirmed nervously in my arms as I walked silently across the gigantic room. Three chairs sat at the very north end but they were all empty.

"Where are they?" I asked Felix quietly.

"They'll be joining us in just a moment." He whispered back. "They had some other business to tend to."

"Well I haven't got all day..." My sentence trailed off as I witnessed three cloaked figures glide into the room. Aro, Caius and Marcus took off their red hoods as they positioned themselves in front of us. Aro seemed very pleased with the vision of me standing there very nervously with young Dawn in my arms. Caius, always scowling as usual, seemed shocked and a little disgusted. Marcus seemed, well he seemed bored for christ’s sake.

"Renesmee! What a delight is it to see you here today! I'm so glad you've decided to join our little family! I will make great use of you in the guard!" he laughed a sour wicked laugh. "Oh yes and im so terribly sorry for Felix's horrific conduct...before. Very impolite!" Felix bowed his head and hissed under his breath.

"I don't want to join the guard Aro, I’ve just come here to take care of my son." I stared into Aro's murderous red eyes and smiled. "And also, it isn’t Renesmee anymore it's Vanessa now." Aro laughed again and my face twisted into a wince.

"Well Vanessa im sorry to say that you cannot just live among us as a simple bystander! You must have something to offer me. I'm afraid you must leave if it is a babysitter you will pose as." He frowned and I felt a growl rise from my throat.

"I am not a babysitter Aro I am a mother. I am Dawn's mother." I sighed heavily and Felix put his lips to my ear.

"Just except, he's not playing Ness." His hot breath made me shiver.

"Alright, alright! I'll join your silly little guard Aro, but I will not be used in such a vulgar way as I have before." Aro nodded thoughtfully and then smiled.

"Of course not dear Vanessa! Welcome to our family! "He floated over to me and shook my hand gently. It was official just then because I knew that in my mind he saw no hint of me leaving.

"Aro brother! You must have lost your mind! Surely this is a trick! She is a spy! A demon's mother! A harlot! We can't let her infiltrate our coven like this!" Caius hissed.

"Silence Caius! This woman is of no danger to us. She has no malicious intent what so ever! Leave her be and we will retire to our chambers!" Aro replied clearly irritated.

"But first! Let us see the child!" I think it was the first time I had ever heard Marcus talk but when he did his voice was loud and demanding.

"Well of course dear Marcus! Let us see!" Aro returned to me and reached out for Dawn. I shook my head and he backed away a little. "Well I see you have your mother’s stubbornness!" He said laughing.

"Does it have any gifts?" Marcus spoke again softer then before.

"Yes he does. He can absorb the powers and the emotions around him and turn them against those who try to harm him." I said very quietly. I heard Aro gasp and Caius growl.

"What a lovely talent this child has! I've never heard of anything like it! He will be a great contributor to the future of the Volturi! Dear Felix you have bore an amazing child with an amazing power! Surely this will make up for your other circumstances I assume!" Aro frowned and turned back to me.

"He will not be used just yet Aro... he is only a child and my child at that! He must mature first before you can even consider his joining..."

"I agree!" Felix interrupted me but for once I was not angry. "I will not have my son thrown into this torturous world just yet Aro. It is too soon." I looked at him and granted him one puny smile. That was all he was getting for now.

"Well if that is your wish Felix. So what is it with you too? Is it safe for me to call her your mate?" I broke into hysterics and Dawn laughed along with me.

"No Aro she is not." Felix said wincing at my laughter.

"Well then Felix you all are dismissed. Please stop by later for another little chat. Goodbye Vanessa." Aro said walking away with his brothers trailing behind him.

Back in the room, I was done laughing. Felix sat down on the couch while i bustled around taking care of Dawn.

"He’ll want to see you soon Nessa. To evaluate the importance of your power. He will use you as a communicator while another one of the guard takes care of Dawn. Within three years time he will start to evaluate Dawn also, he will be given the decision to join or not at the age of maturity." I sighed listening for any sign of salvation. There must be something to do here for fun. I remember only months ago I was shopping and gossiping daily, now I was a mother and a guard member. What would my family say?

"Is their any way for me to talk to my family? Just tell them im okay? I haven’t talked to them since I ran." I asked.

"You can maybe right them a letter, but of course they would see where it was from if you mailed it. I guess I can ask another member to deliver for you. What are you going to say?"

"Just that im alright okay! You can read it when im finished so you can make sure im not 'spying'!" My anger was flaring but that was normal. Another emotion I was feeling was pain.

"Do you really miss them? Because you didn’t have to come, I didn’t want to force you." I closed my eyes and took in a deep breath.

"Why are you being so nice Felix? Just tell me the reason, because your little 180 you did with your personality and all is very confusing and troubling." He sighed and sat got up out of his seat.

"I felt bad for what I did Nessa, I really did. I felt it even before I found her, even before I got onto the plane back to Volterra." I interrupted him even though it wasn't entirely necessary.

"Who’s her?" I asked.

"Don't play dumb Ness I know Jane told you! She's always been a hopeless case when it came to secrets! The only secrets she can keep are hers!" He laughed and I felt instantly relieved. "I felt disgusted with myself and after a while I even contemplated death. It was just so wrong you see, and I knew it."

"Why'd you do it then?" I asked feeling my eyes well up with tears.

"I was desperate. Desperately in need of someone to love! If not you then a child maybe. In the guard we are like family because it is most convenient, but in real life I don’t think any one of us would even consider being friends with the other. We’re all so different you see…sometimes those differences work out but sometimes they do not.” I looked down at my shoes and sighed. He was actually making me feel sorry for him.

“I know what that’s like I guess. Being forced to bond with people just because of proximity, I’ve been doing it my whole life I guess.” Suddenly Felix was right in front of me, staring into my eyes.

“I saw that. I knew what you were thinking when I saw how bored you were that day you came to Volterra for your assessment. You were basically trapped, trapped in a crazy mixed up family, trapped in a crazy fateful relationship with that werewolf. Imprinting doesn’t give you a choice Nessa, but I gave you one. I’m only sorry that I took that choice away from you. I guess I served you the same fate as imprinting did and im sorry for that.” If vampires could cry this would be the moment that he would. I grabbed the sides of his face in my hands and kissed him on the forehead. His icy skin reminded me of home.

“It’s fine Felix. It’s all fine, lets just…” The tears started for me now. “Let’s just move on. We have a son you know.” I laughed nervously, not used to the word ‘son’. “I guess it’s just our job to take care of him now. Let’s just take care of him…the best way we can.” He looked up at me with that look- the look that said everything. I didn’t want to have to face a look like that, a look that told me ‘this is right’. It was all too much for me then but before I could protest Felix realized it and gently pushed his lips against mine. It was so soft I couldn’t even tell his lips were rock hard. Everything else in the world seemed to disappear and suddenly I felt myself falling. He pulled away quickly, embarrassed by his intrusion, but only if he knew it wasn’t an intrusion at all.

“I’m sorry.” He mumbled before he turned to walk away. I grabbed his arm like so many other time before but this time I grabbed it much gentler.

“Don’t be.” I smiled at him and he pulled me into his arms and kissed me once again.
