Chapter 11: La Push

I don’t know how long it took us to get to Jacob’s house. When we arrived, he stopped and leaned over so I could climb down. I didn’t want to move. Being on him, feeling the warmth of his fur was mystical, dreamlike. Once I got off I knew I would wake up from the dream and the pain would come crashing back in.

He laid down on the ground and rolled me off his back. He ran back into the woods and came back a few minutes later transformed back into Jacob. He picked me up and cradled me in his arms against his bare, massive chest, walked me inside and sat me down on his bed.

“Bella, are you ok? What is going on? What did he do to you?”

All I could do was start crying again. He hugged me but I couldn’t stop. After what I guess was a few minutes he laid me on his bed and covered me with his blanket. “Ok, we don’t have to talk about this tonight but we are going to talk about it in the morning. Just try to get some sleep ok Bells?”

I couldn’t speak but nodded my head.

I knew I would be unable to sleep so I got up and sat on the floor against the wall. I knew that the Cullens had called him by now and I knew he would try to find me, even if it was just to hide his secret from the rest of his family. I didn’t see how that was possible since Alice sees everything but maybe her ability was still on the fritz.

I kept seeing him and her together in the meadow over and over in my head. When I felt the vibration on my phone I froze. What if it was him? I couldn’t talk to him, there was no way I could handle hearing his voice. I grabbed it from my pocket shaking with fear and was relieved to see it was Charlie. I had no idea what time it was, he was probably worried I wasn’t home yet.

I tried to collect myself, “Hey Charlie.”

“Bells, where the hell are you? Are you ok?” He sounded angry.

“I am fine Dad. I am down here at La Push with Jacob and Billy. I didn’t realize it was this late.”

“Late? It is only 11:00 o’clock.” He sounded confused.

“Uh…Sorry, I just thought you were calling because I haven’t checked in with you.”

“Bells, you are not a little girl anymore, I don’t expect you to check in with me all of the time. I mean, you are about to be married.” The tears ran silently down my face. “I am calling because Alice called me worried sick about you. She said you were there and were going to spend the night and then all of a sudden you just took off. What is going on?”

“Oh, well…uh….Jacob called me and said they were having a bonfire tonight and asked me to come hang out. Alice was at the store when he called so I left her a note; I guess she didn’t see it.” I was amazed at how good the lie came out.

“What are you doing with Jacob? The last time I checked you two weren’t even on speaking terms.”

“Well, we are now and I am fine Dad. In fact, we are having so much fun I am going to stay down here at Billy’s tonight.”

“Well, ok then, but you need to call Alice. She is worried about you. It was rude just leaving that way.” He sounded disappointed in me.

“Dad, can you call her for me? I really want to get back to the party.” I was literally pleading.

“No, it isn’t my responsibility to call her, it’s yours.”

“Ok, I will call her now. I will see you tomorrow Dad.”

“Good night Bells. Be careful.”

I realized Charlie was right. Alice and the rest of the family had been so good to me. They were probably freaking out with worry since Alice couldn’t see me when I was with Jacob or any of the wolves for that matter. But what if Edward was there? If he was really hunting like he said he was he wouldn’t be home by now but since I knew he wasn’t, there was a good chance he was there. Not that he would care about where I was anymore because he was with her now but if he was keeping it from the rest of his family he would need to play along with the charade and act worried.

As I was tracing the numbers on the phone, still deciding whether to actually push them to call Alice, the phone started vibrating in my hand. I wouldn’t have to make the decision anymore, it was her.

“Hey Ali…...,” was all I could get out.

“Bella! Where the hell are you? I can’t see you. Are you ok?” Just tell me where you are, we will come get you.”

“Alice, calm down. I am ok. I am down at La Push.”

“La Push? What the hell are you doing there? When did you leave here? Why didn’t you tell us you were leaving? We have been so worried about you and Edward…..well needless to say he is on his way home and he isn’t happy.”

The tears starting streaming down my face again just hearing his name, “Edward is happier than he has been in a long time Alice.” I tried my best to keep control of my voice.

“Happy? Bella, what are you talking about? He is worried sick about you! He has been trying to call you for the past two hours and you weren’t answering. I wasn’t able to see you…he is losing it!”

Wow. He really was going to play this out. I was sure now that his family had no idea he was with Megan. But why didn't I know he called? Maybe I was just too out of it to notice.

“Alice, I can’t talk right now.” The sobs were coming uncontrollably now. She knew I was crying.

“Bella, what is going on? Meet me at the La Push border. I am coming to get you right now.”

“No, I….I can’t Alice. I am staying here.” I wasn’t sure if she was even able to understand me as I was crying so hard.

“What do you mean you can’t? Did those dogs hurt you?” Her voice went from worried to infuriated.

“No…no….I’m fine.” The tears were obviously a giveaway. “I just….I can’t see him Alice….I can’t.”

“See who? Bella, you aren’t making any sense.”

Edward,” the name sent a pain shooting down my whole body, through every vein, through every muscle and organ.

“What are you talking about? Why can’t you see Edward? Bella, he is really freaking out!”

“I can’t talk anymore Alice. Just tell Edward I saw him today,” I could barely get the next words out, “at…at the meadow. He will understand then.”

“Bella, are you going crazy on me? How could you have seen Edward today? He wasn’t anywhere near here.”

“I have to go Alice. Please tell everyone thanks for me and I’m sorry if I worried them. I am especially sorry for worrying you. Please forgive me.”

“Bel…,” was the last thing I heard before I hung up the phone. I curled up on the floor against the wall as the unending tears continued. The phone continuously kept vibrating in my hand.

I must have fallen asleep because when I finally opened my eyes the sun was just starting to come out. As I started to get up I realized that every muscle in my body ached. It could have been because I fell asleep in the fetal position on the floor or the wrenching of my body from my constant crying. My hope was my body was giving out on me and I would be dead soon.

I felt a vibration in my hand and looked down to see that I was still grasping my cell phone. When it finished I looked at the screen and saw my voice mail and text boxes were both full.

Jacob walked in with a glass of orange juice in his hand as I was sitting on his bed staring at the phone and smiled. “Your voice mail full too? He left so many messages on my phone that it used up all of the answering machine tape.”

He sat down next to me and handed me the glass, “I’m sure you are dehydrated after all of your crying last night. I was worried my room would be flooded today.” He elbowed me lightly in the ribs, obviously trying to cheer me up.

“So, are you going to tell me what all of the water works were about? I mean, I know it is something with him as evidenced by the onslaught of calls. I finally had to take the phone off the hook because he kept calling even when he couldn’t leave anymore messages.”

The phone was continuing to vibrate in my hand. I looked down and couldn’t breathe when I saw him on my screen. I so wished I hadn’t added his picture to his profile on my phone.

Jacob must have seen my reaction, “Here, give me that.” He grabbed the phone from me and before I could get a syllable out he had answered it.

“She doesn’t want to talk to you. Leave her alone. I swear once I find out what you did to her I am going to hunt you down and make you pay bloodsucker.”

Not even a minute after he hung up the phone started vibrating again. He threw it on the other side of the bed.

I looked at him still in shock of what he just did.

“What? Someone had to tell him to back off.” I could tell he was pleased with himself.

“So, are you going to tell me what the leech did to you so I can go tear him apart?” I wished he was kidding but he wasn’t.

I knew I couldn’t tell Jacob what happened. He was serious about wanting to hurt…him…I couldn’t bear to even think his name. Even though this had happened I still wasn’t ready to think of a world without him in it, whether we were together or not.

“I really don’t want to talk about it Jacob. Once I tell you all of your other wolf buddies will know as they are in your brain and I…I am just not ready to deal with it yet. I promise you that Edward didn’t lay a hand on me, none of the Cullens did. I just have to figure some things out before I can talk about it. Please understand.”

“He may not have laid a hand on you but he obviously hurt you. I know you are just protecting him so I won’t go tear him apart I just don’t understand why. He has done nothing but hurt you over and over again.”

Please Jacob. I really just need you to be my friend right now and understand.”

“Fine, but I am not letting this go Bella. I am not going to let him hurt you anymore.”

“Don’t worry; he will not be doing anything to me anymore.” I felt the tears starting to swell again.

Jacob wrapped his constantly growing, muscular arms around me. I could hear the phone continue to vibrate and knew that it was never going to stop. Edward was probably feeling too guilty now that Alice had told him I saw him in the meadow. He was tortured and wouldn’t give up.

“Jacob, could you do me a favor?” I pulled myself out of his arms and wiped the tears from my face.

“Sure Bells, you know I would do anything for you.”

“He isn’t going to stop and I need to put an end to this. Could you please deliver a letter to him for me?”

“No way!” He screamed. “Not unless you want me to kill him. Why don’t you just text him if you don’t want to talk to him.”

“I have to return something Jacob. Please, I am begging you.”

“I can’t do it Bells, I wouldn’t be able to control myself. But if it means that much to you and it will get him out of your life then I will have Seth do it for you.”

“Thank you Jacob. Do you have a pen and some paper I could use?”

“Sure.” He went over to small desk in the corner of his room and pulled out a yellow legal pad, a pen and an envelope. “Here you go.”

“Thanks again Jacob. Would you mind giving me a couple of minutes alone to do this?”

“Sure thing. I will go get Seth. Let me know when you are done.”

I picked the phone off of the bed as I knew I should listen to his messages so I could get a better handle on what to say to him but I couldn’t bear to hear his voice. I opted to read the text messages instead.

From last night at 9:30 PM:

Bella, where are you? Why aren’t you picking up your phone? I am going to literally die if I don’t find out if you are ok. Please, please call me.

I thought reading the text wouldn’t be as painful but I was wrong. I could picture his long, smooth icy fingers typing at vampire speed and I thought I was going to be sick. I decided to skip to the very last text he sent

Message sent at 6:13 AM:

My Dearest Bella, I don’t have any idea what is going on with you but please, please call me. Alice gave me some weird message I didn’t understand. Please my love, I am going mad. I need to hear from you if only to find out if you are ok. Forever yours, Edward

I didn’t get why he didn’t understand the message. Shouldn’t the word meadow have been enough of a clue for him? Maybe Alice didn’t hear me correctly. I was after all losing it by that point of the conversation. And why is he so concerned? Is he still pretending to act worried to not let his family catch on?

I couldn’t look at any more. Every fiber in my body ached just from reading the two messages I did.

I could barely get my trembling fingers to grab the pen. I was sure my writing wasn’t going to be readable but I had to try.

Edward, I need you to please quit trying to contact me. Every time I see your picture on my phone it is like a knife jabbing through my heart. There isn’t enough of my heart left to keep enduring this kind of punishment. I wanted to let you know that you don’t need to feel guilty. I know you are probably torturing yourself right now so please stop it. I don’t blame you for going to her. Your frustration with me being a mere human and not being able to fulfill your needs had to take its toll at some point. She is beautiful and worthy to be with you as I never could be. I am releasing you from your promise, Edward. After you left me the first time, you promised me you would never leave me again. I am sure that is why you stayed with me and were keeping her a secret. You are off the hook. If you ever cared about me all, you will honor my wishes. Please stop calling me and please stop calling Jacob as well. Don’t bother trying to wait for me at my house either as I am staying here for a while. Bella

I tried to wipe the tear spots off the paper but it was pointless. Once I wiped one off another two would fall. Hopefully the letter would be dry by the time he got it. I grabbed the beautiful, oval shaped diamond on my left hand. It was just a few months ago that I didn’t want to put it on, now it was like it was sucking my heart out with it as I pulled it off my finger and stuck it in the envelope.

I walked over to the dresser and looked in the mirror. I tried to somewhat pull myself together but it was an almost impossible task. I started pulling tiny portions of leaves out of my hair. I wasn’t sure if they were still from the meadow or if they were from riding on Jacob’s back as he ran through the forest. There was mud on my jeans and my flannel shirt I was wearing over my t-shirt. There was nothing I was going to be able to do about that. When I got all of the leaves out I used my fingers to attempt combing my hair. I gave up. What was the point anyway; if there was any fairness in the world I would be hopefully be dead soon.

I opened the door and saw Jacob and Seth sitting on the couch.

“Hey Bella!” Seth jumped up and gave me a hug.

“Hey Seth, thank you so much for doing this for me.”

“No problem Bella. Do you want me to go now?”

“If you don’t mind.” I handed him the envelope.

“I am on it!” I couldn’t help but smile at his youthful excitement.

As I turned to Jacob I saw him shake his head and laugh.

“What?” I was confused.

“You’re a mess girl. Look at yourself. C’mon, let me at least get you a clean shirt.”

He went to his room and came back with a t-shirt that I am sure would be too big for the Incredible Hulk.

“Here you go. You can change in my room. I promise I won’t peak.” It was good to see his smile.

When I went in the room I could hear the cell phone vibrating again. I was hoping Seth would turn into his wolf form so he could get the letter over to him quickly.

When I came out of the room Jacob was laughing again. “You look like a drowned rat in that thing.”

“Yeah, well at least it is clean. Thanks Jacob, for everything.”

“No problem Bells. That’s what friends are for.”

“So, we’re still friends?”

“Of course we are. I know I haven’t been that great of a friend lately, it was just hard on me. But now, now that you are free from him, we can get back to the way we used to be.”

I was hoping that he meant the way we used to be when we were friends. I was now concerned that he thought we were going to be something more. While I did love Jacob, I knew I could never give what was left of my heart away to anyone ever again.

I went over to the couch and sat next to him. I broke down sobbing again. He wrapped his arms around me again and was slowly rocking me back and forth.

“Bella, I am so sorry for whatever it is you are going through. I am going to kill him I swear I am”

“No you aren’t Jacob. What happened wasn’t his fault. It was mine. I knew I could never be enough to keep him happy.”

“What? Are you kidding me?” His fists were closed tightly and I could see he was getting angry.

“Bella, you were always too good for that cold-skinned freak. Did he…did he actually tell you that you weren’t good enough for him?” He started shaking now. I had to calm him down.

“No, Jacob, it was nothing like that. I will tell you about it in time I promise.” I rubbed my hand up and down his overly-muscled arm which seemed to calm him down.

I needed to change the subject. “Hey, where is Billy?”

“He went fishing with your dad this morning. Don’t worry, he is keeping your story that we had a bonfire last night.”

“Ok good. I don’t need Charlie all over me doing the overly-concerned dad thing right now.”

“Yeah, that is what I figured.” He was much calmer now.

There was a quick knock and Seth came through the door.

“Wow; that was fast Seth. Did…..did he get the letter?”

“Yeah, I gave it to him. But please, don’t ever have me do that again.”

“Why?” Jacob stood up getting angry again. “Did he try to hurt or threaten you?”

“No, it was nothing like that. He was very nice.” He glanced over at me, “He was just…he was just a mess Bella. As soon as he answered the door he said “Please Seth, please tell me she is ok.” I told him that you were and he looked relieved for a minute. Then, when I handed him your letter he felt whatever it was you had in there through the envelope and I thought he was going to cry. I know we are supposed to be enemies and stuff but I felt really bad for the guy.”

I could see the sadness in Seth’s eyes like he was about to cry. I forgot that he and Edward had established some kind of bond when they were fighting Victoria and Riley together. I just didn’t get why Edward was so sad. It must have been the guilt he was carrying. Hopefully after he read my letter he could get rid of that. I didn’t want him to ever be unhappy, even if I was.

“I’m so sorry Seth. I won’t ever ask you to do anything like that again.” Here came the tears again.

“Enough already, both of you,” Jacob said angrily. “This guy isn’t worth anyone shedding a tear over. I mean really Seth, he is a bloodsucker that hurt Bella and you are feeling sorry for him. You need to grow…”

Jacob stopped mid sentence and looked over at Seth. Seth seemed terrified all of sudden but Jacob flashed a big smile upon his face.

“Oh no,” Seth said in a whisper.

“Oh yes,” Jacob answered back excitedly.

“What? What is going on?” Even here I was always the last to know anything.

“This is just too good! It saved me a trip. Bella, you might want to go hang out in my room for a while. I don’t think you want to see this.” Jacob started walking to the front door.

I suddenly felt paralyzed. No, he…he wouldn’t… he couldn’t!

I followed Jacob and Seth out the front door, I couldn’t feel my legs moving. Jacob was laughing as I pushed him out the way.

I couldn’t breathe when I saw him. He was being followed closely by Sam, Jared and Paul. Our eyes locked as he continued to walk towards us.

When he got up to the front yard he stopped, still looking at me with his pained eyes, the wolves then surrounded him.

“Edward no! What have you done?!”
