Chapter 12: Breached
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I couldn’t believe he had come here to La Push. He knew as well as I did what this meant. The tears started coming down my face at almost vampire speed now.
“It is ok Bella,” Edward said in the tone he always used when he was trying to comfort me.
I couldn’t speak. I just stared at him, then back at Jacob who was now walking over to him.
“Thanks for saving some of the fun for me guys,” Jacob said looking at Sam and the others.
I wiped the tears from my face, “Jacob no!” I screamed and jumped in front of him.
“Bells, get out of the way. He crossed the line.”
“Bella,” His voice cut through me like a knife. “It is ok Sweetheart. Step out of the way please.” How could he be doing this? If I moved he knew what they would do to him. Sure, he could probably take on Jacob and maybe one or two others without a problem but not all of them.
“Yeah, listen to him Bella,” Jacob growled.
I wasn’t going to budge even though the wolves could move me out of the way in a heartbeat.
“Jacob,” Edward said too calmly given the situation he was in. “I am well aware of the consequences I am going to face for coming here and I assure you I am ready for them. You can kill me and I won’t put up a fight. All I ask is that you give me a little time with Bella before you do so. We will not leave your sight though I would appreciate a little privacy. With all of you surrounding me there is no way I will be able to go anywhere and I give you my word that I won’t even attempt to do so.”
“She doesn’t want to talk to you if you haven’t noticed,” Jacob snarled.
“Yes, I do!” I reacted quickly. I had to buy him some time even though talking to him would probably kill me. I still felt like I wanted to die but not that painfully.
Jacob looked surprised, “Are you serious? You cried all night over this leech and now you want to talk to him? I will never understand you Bella.”
“Jacob,” Sam interrupted. Let’s give them some time.”
Jacob looked angry but he knew Sam had the final word. His fists were clenched tightly, “Alright Cullen, you have 30 minutes. You can stay right here in the yard. We will back off but we will be watching. If you so much as try to touch her it is over. Do I make myself clear?”
“Crystal,” Edward replied. “And thank you for your generosity Jacob.”
“Don’t thank me. I am not doing this for you; I am doing this for her.”
“Of course, my apologies.”
Sam, Paul and Jarod stepped back and I could see all of Edward now. Why did he have to be so beautiful? Why do I still love him even after what he did? Why did he have to do this?
As Edward stepped forward, Jacob jumped in front of him. “What’s in the bag Cullen?” He asked suspiciously. I hadn’t noticed before but Edward was carrying a back pack.
“These are just some things I brought for Bella. She left her camera and purse at our house. I also brought some of Alice’s things as I figured she didn’t have a change of clothes with her abrupt departure last night. Please, feel free to check it if you would like.” He handed the bag to Jacob.
Jacob rummaged through the bag and then handed it to me. “We are going to be right here Bella. The minute you are done with him let me know.”
Jacob and Seth went into the house while Sam, Jarod and Paul went back into the woods, I was sure they didn’t go far.
It was just the two of us there now. I could barely look at him, it felt like my heart was breaking in a million tiny pieces.
He walked over to the tree in Jacob’s front yard and sat down under it. He patted the ground next to him signaling me to come sit. “C’mon Bella, be strong, do it for him,” I said to myself over and over again until my legs started working. I walked over and sat down in front of him. I didn’t sit close as I couldn’t bear to smell him at close range.
I spoke first, looking down, not at him, “Edward, what are you doing? You need to get out of here. What were you thinking?”
“Bella, are you ok? You have no idea how worried I was about you. It was the longest night of my life.” His voice was quiet but strained.
I looked up at him confused. How could he think I was ok after what I saw? “What do you think Edward?”
He returned my confused look with one of his own. “I don’t know what to think Bella.”
He pulled out the familiar envelope from his pocket. He looked at me with such sadness I thought I would die. “Would you mind terribly explaining this to me?”
I had to look away from him so I started fumbling with the back pack on my lap. “What part do you need an explanation for?”
“All of it. I need you to explain all of it Bella. Last night, this letter. It doesn’t make any sense.”
“Edward, I was at the meadow yesterday…I saw you….ugh, this is pointless.” I needed to get him out of here.
“Edward, you need to go. You can outrun them. Please, run and don’t look back.”
“I am not going anywhere Bella.”
I was frantically moving my head around, searching every part of the area, “Where…Where is Alice? How come she is not here with the rest of your family! I am sure she saw this coming! Where are they?” I felt like I was suffocating.
“Bella, calm down. They know I am here. I made them reluctantly agree to let me do this. I made them promise they would not cross the line. Now please, can we stay on topic here? What do you mean you saw me?”
How could they let him come? What were they thinking? I couldn’t believe this way happening.
“Bella, can you please answer me? I don’t know how much more of not knowing what is going on with I can take.”
I glared at him in frustration, “At the meadow Edward, I saw you and Megan. I saw you with her Edward, together! Do you want me to draw you a picture?!” I couldn’t help the tears now coming down again.
He looked at me in utter confusion, “Megan? What? What are you talking about Bella, Megan is gone! I was with Emmitt!”
“I saw you Edward! I saw you both! In our spot! How could you…there of all places.” I threw my head down in my hands uncontrollably sobbing now.
“Bella, I have no idea what you are talking about.” His voice sounded pained, “ Please, stop crying. They are watching me and I cannot hold you and kiss away your tears. It is killing me.”
“Edward, why do you care anymore? I told you not to feel guilty, that I don’t blame you.” I am not sure he could even understand me through the sobbing.
“Bella, Sweetheart, look at me.” It was painful but I looked at him. His eyes were sad and back to a smoldering golden brown, burrowing straight through me, “Listen to me carefully. I don’t know what it is you think you saw but I swear to you it was not me.” I could hear the frustration creeping into his voice. “I mean, how…how could you even think I would do anything to hurt you? How could you even think I could be with anyone else?”
He started rocking back and forth, his head now in his hands with his fists knotted in his hair. “Why am I such a failure at making you realize how much I love you?!”
If I hadn’t seen him there at the meadow, with my own eyes, I would have believed him.
“Edward, this conversation is pointless. Please just go, run.”
“Pointless? Pointless Bella? I just spent the entire night literally going out of my mind. Then, this morning, I get a letter from you with your tears spilt all over it that made no sense whatsoever. And to top it off, I get my ring back, the one that was supposed to be on your finger forever, with no explanation. And now I am here, a place that is going to end me but I don’t care. I don’t care as long as I know you are ok and we can figure out why you think you saw something you didn’t so you know I didn’t betray you. So if you don’t mind, I would greatly appreciate it if you stopped calling this conversation pointless.”
“I’m…I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that.
“Ok then, let’s try to figure this out.” He was trying to calm himself. “You said you saw me and that obnoxious vampire in the meadow. I for one know this is impossible for two reasons. One, because I was 300 miles away yesterday, hunting with Emmitt. And two, I would never for even one minute consider doing that because I love you.”
He was confusing me. He was so believable but I know what I saw.
“Bella, is there a chance that you maybe fell and hit your head again while you were hiking? Alice said she found you laying in the forest.”
I couldn’t believe he was trying to play the klutz card. My confusion was gone. “No! No Edward. I didn’t fall. I know what I saw!”
He leaned over and looked at the scrapes on my hands then looked up at me with his right eyebrow lifted.
“I mean, yes I fell, a couple or… 5 times but I didn’t hit my head! Are you really going to try to turn this around and make me think I am crazy?”
“Bella, it wouldn’t be the first time you were out of it and had some bizarre dream. You dreams are very real to you sometimes.”
I was so frustrated now I wanted to hit something. I wanted to hit him. I started rummaging through the back pack looking for something, anything to throw at him when I saw my camera and it hit me. That’s it! The pictures! I took pictures yesterday! He couldn’t use me being crazy as an excuse anymore!
I grabbed the camera out of the bag and at this moment was very glad I was a technology girl and used a digital camera.
“What are you doing?” I didn’t look up at him but I could hear the confusion in his voice.
I was frantically flipping through the pictures trying to get to the ones I took yesterday.
“Bella, what are you doing?” The frustration was back in his voice. “Please, please focus. We are running out of time here.”
I finally saw the first picture I took yesterday. It was of the sun rays coming into the forest right before I entered the clearing. “Here, now tell me I am crazy Edward.” I handed him the camera.
“What?” He was back to being confused.
“Just look at the pictures Edward.”
He took the camera from me and was shaking his head back and forth. “Ok, what is it exactly I am supposed to be seeing in this picture?”
“Not that one, keep flipping forward. You will see.” I couldn’t look at them myself. Seeing the image of them the first time was more than enough.
I watched his face as he clicked through the pictures, studying each one. I was waiting to see the expression on his face when he saw himself sparkling in the sun with her. It never came.
When he finished looking he looked up at me. “Those are very nice pictures of the meadow Bella, but what does this have to do with our present conversation?”
“What?” What do you mean what does this have to do with our present conversation?” I grabbed the camera back from him. I started flipping backwards through the pictures he just looked at and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, or not seeing. It was the meadow in the pictures but they were not there, not even one sparkle of their glittering bodies. I frantically went back and back but they didn’t show up in any of them.
“This can’t be. I….I saw you….I took pictures….I ... I am crazy.”
“Bella my love, you are not crazy. I don’t know what happened there yesterday or why you think you saw what you did but I do know it isn’t because you are crazy. Maybe you feel asleep or like I said before, hit your head again.”
“I don’t know…I don’t know anymore. I know I didn’t hit my head, I know I didn’t fall asleep….I” My head was swimming. Could it be true? Could it be that Edward hadn’t betrayed me? I was just about to break out in a smile when suddenly the gravity of the situation hit me. What have I done? Edward! He was here, he came onto La Push grounds and breached the treaty! He came here because of my…….
I looked up at him in horror, “Oh Edward, Oh God, what have I done?” I couldn’t breathe again.
“Shhh…Bella. You didn’t do anything. You were just confused.”
“But Edward, you are here! You crossed the line and you are here because of me and now…now….” I couldn’t even speak the words.
“Shhh…Bella, listen to me. It was worth it. It was worth you knowing that I didn’t betray you. It was worth knowing that you were safe. If I had to do it all over again I would make the same decision. I don’t have any regrets, at least not about this anyway.”
I couldn’t believe what he was saying. It was like he was giving up, accepting what was about to happen to him. “Edward, you have to run, please run.”
“It’s too late Bella. If I ran, they would just go after my family and you know I could never let that happen.”
Deep down I knew he was right but I couldn’t give up. What was I going to do?
“Maybe I can reason with them Edward. Jacob might listen to me and…”
“Bella, I broke the rules. I broke the treaty, they will not let me go. Now, I need you to listen to me. There isn’t much time left.”
My sobs were becoming fast and furious again.
“I am so sorry Bella,” he sounded like he was in excruciating pain again. “I am so sorry I cannot hold you right now. I am so sorry I won’t be here to comfort you when you are sad, to kiss your wounds when you fall. I am so sorry that you will be in more pain soon because of what is about to happen.”
“Sweetheart, I need you to know that I am leaving this place a happy man. I would never have been able to say that without knowing you. I walked this earth dead for so many years. I mean yes, technically I am physically dead, but I mean dead inside. I never thought there was any possibility of ever being happy and then you came into my life and it was like I was resurrected. Every moment I was so blessed to have with you, loving you, has been the greatest gift anyone has ever received. I could never thank you enough for that. Now, I am glad I can finally give you something back. I can give you the gift of you finally knowing that I love you more than life itself.”
This couldn’t be happening. It just couldn’t.
“Bella, I need you to promise me something. I need you to promise me that you will never blame yourself for this. This was my choice. I also need you to promise me you won’t do anything foolish after this is over.”
“I can’t, I can’t Edward.”
“Bella, you always told me that you believed I had a soul and that when my time ended here I would move on to a different place. If this is true, I will never be able to move on to that place unless I know you are going to be ok. Please, you have to promise me.”
How could I promise him this, but yet, how could I deny him this either? How was I supposed to live in a world without him in it?
I was about to reach out and grab him when I heard the door open.
“It is time Bella,” Jacob said in a voice that was shockingly too happy.
I looked at Jacob and then back at Edward. I was terrified and trembling.
“Bella, promise me.” His eyes were desperate.
I could barely manage to get the words out, “I promise.”
“Thank you my love. Now, I need you to do me one last favor. Please go in the house and shut your eyes and cover your ears. I don’t want you to see or hear what is about to happen. Can you do that for me?”
I couldn’t take this anymore.“No!” I jumped up and looked at Jacob. He could see the tears rolling down my face.
“I can’t believe it,” Jacob said with utter disgust. “He sucked you back in didn’t he? Well, it doesn’t matter this time Bella. He broke the treaty and for that he must pay.”
The others walked slowly out of the woods. There were all here now; Quill, Embry, Leah…all of them. They were all in wolf form except for Jacob and Seth.
“Jacob wait!” I ran over to him.
“This is all a mistake, my mistake. Please, if anyone should be punished it should be me.”
“Quit being a drama queen Bella. You didn’t drag him here and even if you did it wouldn’t matter. A breach of contract is a breach of contract.”
“Bella, it is ok Sweetheart. Please, just go inside.” I couldn’t believe that this would be the last time I would hear his beautiful voice.
“Still telling her what to do, even on your death bed. How will she ever manage to get by with you not telling her what to do every minute.”
“Stop it Jacob!” I screamed. I ran over and stood in front of Edward, like he had done so many times before for me, protecting me.
In a split second Edward had grabbed me and set me down next to Jacob, then ran up to the rest of the wolves. He turned to look at Jacob, “She is yours now Jacob, please keep her safe.”
“No Edward!” I screamed. I tried to run to him but Jacob grabbed me.
“Jacob, if I could be so bold as to ask for one more favor, I would prefer if we did this in the woods, Bella does not need to be hurt anymore.”
“Of course we will go in the woods, we aren’t savages like you,” Jacob growled.
I glanced over at Edward with my blurry, tear-filled eyes. “It’s ok Bella. Just go inside.” His expression suddenly changed and he glanced over towards the woods. He looked at me again but didn’t say anything. He just winked at me.
He didn’t say anything else, just winked at me.
“Get him out of here,” Jacob scoffed. Jacob and Seth went up to join the rest of the pack and they started walking to the woods. Edward was in the middle and they had all surrounded him. I was reaching up to try to wipe the tears from my eyes so I could see him more clearly when I realized my fist was closed and there was something in it. I opened it up and there was my beautiful engagement ring. Edward must have slipped it in when he moved me. I immediately put in back on my finger.
I was about to go running after him when I saw them all suddenly stop, staring into the woods. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Carlisle, Esme, Emmitt, Rosalie, Alice and Jasper appear out of nowhere. They were all lined up in attack position, one leg outstretched in front of the other, eyes blazing black as coal. In a flash Edward had run through the wolves and was now lined up with them.
I didn’t know what to think or feel. There were 7 Cullens and 10 wolves. If Alice had her ability it would be a fair fight but she didn’t when she was around the wolves. Edward could hear what they were thinking which would be helpful but would it be enough? And what if it was enough? What about Jacob? I couldn’t bear to think of anything happening to him either.
I saw Carlisle ease his stance and walk up to Sam, who seemed to ease his stance as well. “Sam, we didn’t come here to fight you. You have been friends to us, you helped us when no one else could and we don’t want to hurt you.”
Edward spoke, “He says he is sorry but they don’t have a choice. The treaty has been broken.”
Carlisle spoke again, “This whole thing is a big misunderstanding. Yes, my foolish son crossed the boundary when he shouldn’t have but he didn’t do it with any intent to hurt anyone. I was here when the treaty was made Sam. While the actual words were we were not to come onto your lands, the actual meaning was we were not to come on your land and hunt. We didn’t do that. Besides, we have been on your lands before. You allowed me to be here to take care of Jacob when he was injured. Edward came to check on him to be sure he was ok, every day. We both did. Please, I beg of you, let him go. This doesn’t have to happen. It won’t turn out well for either of our families.”
Sam stood there for a minute looking at Carlisle then turned around to look at the rest of his pack. They all seemed calm except Jacob, who was now turned into his huge reddish-brown wolf shape. I was so focused on the whole scene that I hadn’t even seen him and Seth transform. He let out an ear-piercing howl so loud I had to cover my ears.
Sam turned back to Carlisle and Edward spoke again, “He says you made some good points Carlisle. He will agree to let us go with the condition that we will never step on their lands again without their permission, hunting or not. He says that if we do it again they will have no choice but to kill us.”
“We can live with that. Thank you Sam. You made the right choice.” Carlisle reached over and touched Sam on his shoulder.
Jacob moved and was standing directly in front of Edward.
“No Jacob, I cannot do that, not unless that is what she wants,” Edward said calmly.
A couple of seconds later, “Yes, I did. But that was when I thought I wasn’t going to be here anymore. If she wants to stay here with you she can, I would never stop her.”
I watched Jacob as he howled again and ran into the woods. Everyone relaxed their positions but didn’t really move. I looked back over to see Edward but he wasn’t there. I suddenly felt the familiar chill of his arms around me.
I looked up and saw his beautiful face staring at me. He pulled me close and kissed me passionately. It had only been two days since I kissed him last but it felt like forever. “Oh Bella,” he squeezed me so tight I couldn’t breathe.
“Edward, I am so sorry.” I wrapped my arms around him and squeezed him as hard as I could.
“You have nothing to apologize for my love.” He was caressing my face with his finger tips sending chills down my entire body.” “We do have some things we need to talk about but there is plenty of time for that now.”
“Bella, we need to get out of here before they change their minds. I am not going to make you come with me. If you want to stay here with Jacob I will understand.”
“Of course I am coming with you Edward. I missed you so much there is no place I would rather be than with you.” I reached up to touch his beautiful face.
He grabbed my hand softly and looked at the ring back on my finger. “Back where it belongs,” he said as he smiled. He let go of my hand and looked at me and shook his head, “Let’s get you home and get you cleaned up.” He grabbed my wrists and was looking at the scrapes on my hands, shaking his head again; then he grabbed the sleeve of Jacob’s t-shirt with the tips of two fingers, like someone was picking up a dirty diaper that they really didn’t want to be touching. I just looked at him and shrugged; what could I say.
As we started walking towards the rest of the Cullens, Jacob, back to his normal self, ascended out of the woods. He didn’t look at anyone and came and stood directly in front of me. “So, I guess you are going back with him right?” He looked more hurt and angrier than I have ever seen him.
Edward took a step as if to get between Jacob and me but I put my arm out so he knew to stay back. He put his arm around my waist and gripped me tightly.
“Jacob, I was wrong. I made a mistake and made a mess out of things as usual. Please don’t be angry. I am so grateful that you came…”
“Save it Bella. I am done. The next time your smelly freak hurts you don’t call me because I just might not come.”
Edward must have known how much his words hurt me because he grabbed me tighter. I decided it was best not to say anything. Anything I could have said would probably have hurt him more.
Jacob took a step over and was looking at Edward with eyes that could have been shooting darts out of them. “And you, this is not over leech. You may have escaped this time but you won’t the next. I will be watching you every minute of every day. The minute you mess up again you are mine. Or maybe, you will be mine anyway, whether you mess up or not.”
Edward didn’t respond. He swooped me up on his back and started running for the woods. The rest of the Cullens followed.
