Chapter 18: Return

I awoke, startled, to the sound of monsoon-like rain pounding on my bedroom window. Before I could even stretch or roll over I felt his lips on the back of my neck.

“Good morning my love, how did you sleep?”

I loved hearing his voice and seeing him first thing in the morning. One of my favorite moments of every day was when I woke up and got to see him in all of his perfectness for the first time that day. He would usually go home to change clothes and clean up while I was sleeping so I never knew when I rolled over what he would be wearing or how his hair would be combed, but I did know for certain he wouldn’t disappoint. Today was no different.

As I sat up to get my first glimpse of him my heart started racing. He was lying on his side with his head propped up in his hand. He had on a white turtleneck sweater and khaki pants, his hair was disheveled; still a little wet from the rain and his eyes were a smoldering dark brown. It wasn’t fair that I got to see him like that first thing and he had to see me a mess first thing. I tried to comb out my hair a bit as I stared at his beauty in disbelief.

He laughed, “Feeling a little dazzled this morning are we?”

“Little is an understatement. It isn’t fair that you get to look this good.”

He laughed again, “You just think I look good because you love me.”

“No, that’s not it. You do look that good,” I snarled as I got up to go brush my teeth and try to look somewhat human again. “I’ll be right back. Don’t move an inch. I want to admire you again when I get back.”

“You are so silly,” he smiled which made him look twice as amazing as he did a minute ago.

I brushed my teeth, washed my face and brushed the knots out of my hair in record time. I didn’t want to waste another minute not looking at him.

When I got back to my room he was still in the same position. He lifted his hand and waved it up and down the length of his body. “Not an inch,” he smiled his half grin.

“Good grief,” I drooled.

“What?” He replied confused.

“You just seriously look amazing today.”

He laughed as he flew off the bed and grabbed me, pulling us both down on the bed again.

“You are a very silly girl, Bella, but I am glad that my appearance pleases you today.”

“Every day, Edward. You are the most beautiful person in the whole world. I am certain of it,” I whispered as I ran my finger over his chiseled cheek bones.

He kissed me softly, “I am afraid that title has already been taken by you my beautiful Bella.” His dark eyes smoldered. “I wish you could see how beautiful you are when you look at me like you are doing right now. The blush of your skin that grows deeper every time I touch you, the love and desire in your eyes that makes them sparkle like the brightest star, it is truly breathtaking. I don’t know what I could have possibly ever done to deserve you, to deserve the way you look at me. I’m not worthy.”

He gently kissed me again put pulled away as my heart started racing.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered as he traced my lips with his finger.

“I know you’re hungry Edward, I can see it in your eyes. You need to go hunt.”

“I’m sorry,” he apologized again. “I don’t want to leave you but I have to. Alice is home changing and will be over in a few minutes. I won’t be gone a second longer than I have to be and I won’t be far I promise.”

“Will you at least take someone with you?” I asked.

“Jasper is coming with me. We are just going to be in the woods behind your house so we can all stay fairly close together. Charlie already left for La Push to go fishing so he will be safe under the wolves’ supervision.”

“So I take it everything went ok last night? No vampire or wolf sightings anywhere?” I had to ask because Edward wasn’t always forthcoming about information that would frighten me.

“Everything was quiet. Esme and I went home quickly to change and now Alice and Jasper are there. Carlisle met up with Sam this morning to check on Leah.”

“How is she?”

“I don’t know; he isn’t back yet. Sam and a couple other pack members were going to escort him home so he could get cleaned up afterwards. He should be back soon.”

“Please be careful out there Edward,” I pleaded.

“Of course my love. I won’t let anything stop me from coming back to you.”

He kissed me again and even though I knew he was hungry I couldn’t stop myself from latching on to him and pulling him closer.

He chuckled as he tenderly pulled my face away from his. “I have to go but I promise once I get back we can continue right here where we left off.”

“I’m going to hold you to that,” I pouted.

“I hope so,” he slyly smiled.

Alice came a few minutes later and Edward and Jasper took off. Just like he promised, he wasn’t gone long, maybe an hour or so. We decided to go to the Cullen’s for the day since Charlie was fishing and safe.

Edward and I hung out in his room as usual working on our assignments that were due tomorrow. I found it fascinating that he put so much effort into his work. He had done it so many times before I didn’t see the point but he let me know that even though he has done it before he still manages to learn something new every time.

When I finished my economics report, which seemed to take forever, I looked up at Edward who was staring into space with a confused look on his face.

“Edward? Are you ok?”

No reply.

“Edward?”

“Yes Sweetheart?” He replied as he snapped out of it.

“Are you ok? You had a weird look on your face.”

“I did? Hmm. I’m sorry about that.”

“So what were you thinking about?” I asked curiously.

“Oh, nothing really. I was just remembering something from a long time ago. I don’t know why. It is nothing of any importance. So, how is the report coming?” He quickly changed the subject.

“All done,” I responded proudly.

“Good! What do you want to do now? We have a little time left before Charlie get’s home and we have to get back to your house.”

“Well…I believe you have a promise to fulfill.”

“That’s right. I do, don’t I?” He replied as he swaggered over to the bed and pushed me down. I was stunned when I saw him pull his thick, white sweater off revealing his ripped, marble chest. “I think you may need my skin to cool you off” he sexily smiled. “If last night was any indication I must be getting pretty good at this practice thing.”

He laid down next to me and pulled me close to him. I shivered.

“Too cold?” He looked concerned.

“No, that wasn’t because of the cold.”

He smiled and I lost my breath.

“Breathe Bella,” he whispered as he kissed my neck.

His lips carefully moved up to mine and I wrapped my arms around his cold body. I hardly ever got to feel his bare skin next to me. I rubbed my hands up and down his back which felt amazing. The warmth from my hand next to the coldness of his skin was sending bolts of electricity through my body.

His icy hands were now on my back, but under my shirt, something else he had never allowed himself to do. I wrapped my legs around his hips pulling him as close to me as I could. He moaned but not the way he usually moaned when he thought I was getting too excited.

His hands went from my back to my shirt as he slowly pulled it off over my head. I was uncontrollably shaking from the cold and excitement. He moved down and started kissing my stomach as he lifted my arms over my head and held them there. He kissed my stomach, then my neck, my lips, my stomach again. I had never felt a rush of excitement like this before. I thought I was going to explode.

“Bella,” he whispered as he looked so deeply in my eyes that I was sure he could see my soul, “Do you want to…”

There was a knock at the door before he could finish his sentence. He sighed a heavy sigh and rolled off of me. “Go away Alice!”

“Sorry, but Esme wanted me to let Bella know she cooked some dinner for her. It’s her favorite, spaghetti. Plus we have some wedding stuff to talk about Edward. You can monopolize all of her time after the wedding. See you downstairs!”

“Tell me this isn’t happening,” I moaned.

“I would go kill her right now but a part of me is glad she showed up when she did. I’m not doing a very good job of controlling myself lately.”

“Edward, what were you about to ask me,” I had hoped I already knew but needed to know for sure.

He touched my face, “Something very wrong of me,” he answered, disappointed in himself.

“I don’t think it was wrong of you,” I replied, pretty sure I just got the answer I wanted.

“Every day it gets harder to resist you Bella. I cannot remember ever wanting something so badly in my life. It terrifies me that my discipline is slipping like this.”

“Don’t be scared Edward. You are doing fine. You have never hurt me.”

“Not yet,” he shook his head and got up from the bed.

I grabbed my shirt and started fumbling with it as it was inside-out when he came and sat back down next to me. He smiled which was surprising considering his mood now.

“What?” I asked.

“I have just never seen you in your bra. You are remarkably sexy and terrifyingly irresistible.”

“I can show you more,” I teased, hoping to tempt him. We were so, so close this time.

“I kind of like uncovering your beauty piece by piece. Just when I think I couldn’t find you anymore beautiful then I already do, I get surprised.”

He took the shirt from my hands and slowly put it over my head. “Beautiful,” he muttered as he intently watched me cover myself back up.

I reluctantly went downstairs to have my dinner and discuss wedding plans with Alice and Esme. Afterwards Edward brought me home and Carlisle, Esme, Jasper and Alice followed to do patrol.

Charlie was home when we arrived. He was in the kitchen putting his catch of the day in the freezer.

“Hey Dad. It looks like you had a good day. Do you want me to fry some of that up for you?” I had promised him after all.

“If you don’t mind that would be great. Thanks Bells.”

He grabbed a beer from the fridge and sat down at the table instead of going to the living room.

“Edward, I ‘m glad you’re here. Have a seat a minute,” He motioned for Edward to sit in the chair across from him.

It was rare that Charlie was ever glad to see Edward here even though he had grown used to the idea I was going to marry him. It made me nervous.

“What can I do for you Charlie?” Edward replied as he sat down.

“Do you remember the day after the hardware store murders, when I came to your house?”

Oh no. This couldn’t be good.

“Of course,” Edward responded.

“Well, I have been back tracking on everything we investigated in the past few weeks to hopefully help the FBI find the missing girl and I noticed that I didn’t really follow up with your family after I was there. I looked through my notes and saw that I didn’t put down what you all were doing that night. It isn’t a big deal; I just want my notes to be complete before I hand them over.”

Hand over his notes? Was he really going to let the FBI know about the phone call about the dead body supposedly on their property? What would the FBI do? Would they investigate it more? My heart was racing even faster than it did when I was with Edward today.

“I believe we were all at home that night Charlie,” Edward lied coolly.

“And did you hear anything unusual going on outside?” Charlie inquired.

“Not that I recall. You are welcome to ask the rest of my family though.”

“I may just do that. Like I said, it is no big deal. I just want to be sure I have followed up with everything. Thanks for being so understanding about the questions Edward. I am sorry I had to even ask them.” Charlie’s apology sounded sincere.

“My pleasure,” Edward smiled.

“Oh, Bells, I almost forgot, I saw Jacob today and he wanted me to tell you hello. He said he wants you to call him to let him know how that vampire movie was. He is thinking of going and seeing it if it is any good. I still can’t believe Edward talked you into seeing a monster movie,” Charlie laughed and shook his head.

“Yes, well, Bella was very brave about it,” Edward replied.

As if my heart wasn’t beating fast enough with Charlie’s questions to Edward, now Jacob was back in the mix.

“Well, I should be going,” Edward announced as he got up from the table. I have some homework to finish for tomorrow. Bella, I will pick you up at the usual time?”

“Uh…ok. I’ll be ready.”

“Ok, good night then. I will see you tomorrow.”

He winked and was gone. I knew he wouldn’t be up in my room yet. He would most definitely be out telling Carlisle about Charlie’s questions.

I finished Charlie’s fish and sat down across the table from him.

“Aren’t you going to have any?” He asked.

“No, Esme made us dinner earlier. So dad, what was with the 20 questions to Edward? You know that call was a false alarm. You even said it was some kids playing a joke.”

“I know Bells but I have to be thorough about these things.”

“So then why are you giving your notes to the FBI then? I don’t think it’s cool that my own father is going to cause the FBI to come around and bug my fiancé’s family for no reason.”

“I doubt they will do that,” Charlie said convincingly. “There really is no point. Nothing was found. I am just required to tell them everything I know.”

“Ok, I just find it a little embarrassing when my father shows up to my in-laws house with a bunch of police dogs.”

“Just doin’ my job Bells.”

“Ok, well, I have some homework to finish up as well so I am going to turn in early.” I was hoping enough time had passed and Edward was up there waiting for me. I needed to know what he was thinking about all of this.

“Ok, good night Bells. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

I was disappointed that Edward was not back yet when I got upstairs. I opened my biology book and attempted to study for our test tomorrow but it was pointless. I couldn’t concentrate. The minutes went by like hours. He was gone much longer than he should have been. I was starting to get worried. The vampires were still out there, Jacob was still out there. What if something happened to him?

I jumped as my window flew open and Edward darted in. “Oh Edward…thank God.” I ran over and hugged him.

“I’m sorry, did I have you worried?” His voice was like music to my ears.

“Yes I was worried!” I yelled as I slapped him across the chest. I really, really needed to learn once and for all not to hit marble-like vampires.

He laughed as I tried to shake the pain out of my hand. “Are you ok,” he tried to be sympathetic through his chuckles.

“Yep, nothing I haven’t felt before.”

He laughed even harder, “You really need to stop doing that.”

“Funny, I was just thinking the same thing,” I muttered, embarrassed.

“Oh, you poor thing. Come here,” he said as he walked over to hug me again.

He kissed my hand, “There, all better.”

“So I assume you went to talk to Carlisle? What does he think? What did he say?” I definitely needed some reassuring.

“He isn’t particularly worried yet. Charlie didn’t find anything and the evidence has been gone for quite some time. He expects that the FBI will probably come by and ask some routine questions and maybe search the grounds again but he is hopeful that will be the extent of it.”

I did feel some relief as what Carlisle said did make sense. I still worried about Jacob though. His little vampire hints to Charlie were really pissing me off.

“So what do you think about what Jacob told Charlie?”

“I think that dog is really testing my patience. You know I never want to do anything to hurt you Bella but if I have to hurt you to protect you, I will have to do it. He is not just playing around with my family’s life, he is playing around with yours and that is not acceptable to me.”

“My protector,” I replied as I kissed him. I could tell he was getting angry so I was trying to lighten the mood.

It was working.

He smiled, “I thought it annoyed you when I try to protect you. You seem almost pleased.”

“It annoys me when you over protect me, there’s a difference.”

“There isn’t a difference in my book,” he replied, eyes smoldering again as he caressed my hair. “There isn’t enough I can do to protect you from everything I want to. I not only want to protect you physically but I want to protect you from ever feeling sad, getting hurt, anything that would cause you pain.”

He must have seen I was lost in him again so he grabbed my biology book, “Don’t we have some studying to do?” Cue the one eyebrow lift.

“Fine,” I replied unenthusiastically.

Edward was gone when I woke up which was normal on school days. Right on time, he knocked on the door and my heart beated with excitement as I got to catch my first glimpse of him for the day.

“Good morning sunshine,” he smiled ear to ear when I opened the door. “It’s a great day for a biology test don’t you think?”

I looked outside, “Yeah, drizzly, depressing, it looks like a perfect day for a biology test.”

He laughed as he grabbed my books for me and we headed off to Peninsula.

The test was easier than I thought thanks to Edward helping me study. He knew this stuff inside and out. Other than that it was a pretty uneventful day at school. When we got out of our photography class , Alice and Jasper were waiting for us as usual. We started walking to the car when suddenly Edward stopped. I turned to look at him and he was staring straight ahead with a terrified expression. I looked over at Alice and Jasper and they were staring the same way. I was scared to turn around.

“Stay close to me Bella,” Edward muttered. I turned around and realized my fear was justified. Megan, Nathan and Alexis were standing by Edward’s car, and they were not alone.
