Chapter 26: Thursday

“Bella,” I faintly heard his musical voice in my ear. “Bella, wake up, my love. We’re almost home.”

I felt like I had been asleep for days. Every muscle in my body felt stiff and I had a crick in my neck that shot jabbing pains down my spine. When I opened my eyes his glorious face was inches away from mine and the pain instantly went away.

“We’re home?” I replied groggily and threw my arms around his neck. I knew I must’ve looked horrible and hadn’t had a chance to brush my teeth but I didn’t care.

“Yes, we’re just about to land,” he whispered as he hugged me tightly. “You were exhausted. You slept the entire time.”

I loosened my grip around him and looked out the window at the rain beating down sideways on the Plexiglas. I was glad to be home but worried about what was lying ahead of us in Forks. Even though we had the assistance of the Volturi, we still didn’t know what Megan had up her sleeve and when she was planning on making her move. A horrible feeling suddenly swept over me. What if she’d gotten to the Cullens while we were gone? What if she’d gotten to Charlie?

Edward saw the panic spread over my face. “Bella, what is it? What’s wrong?”

“Edward, what if Megan got to them while we were gone!”

“Shhh…Bella…they’re fine. I’ve been talking with Carlisle on the plane phone. They’re all waiting for us at the airport.”

“Oh, thank God.” I was relieved for a moment until I thought about how mad they must be. They had all thought Edward was dead because of me.

“They must hate me,” I mumbled.

“What? Why on earth would you think they hate you?” Edward seemed legitimately confused.

“For going to the Volturi. For making them think you were dead. For everything.”

“Oh, Bella. You know my family loves you every bit as much as I do. No one could ever hate you. That doesn’t mean we’re happy that you put yourself in danger like that though. We are still going to be having a conversation about that later.”

When the plane landed Edward and I waited outside the plane door for Jacob who still looked like he wanted to kill us. I said hello to which I received no reply.

Just as Edward had said, the entire Cullen clan was waiting for us at the gate. To my delight they all embraced me tightly and didn’t seem angry at all. They had assured me that Charlie was at the station and was fine. Alice told me she called Charlie and told him she was surprising me with an overnight shopping trip to Portland so my absence was covered.

We convoyed back to the Cullen’s house where Jacob immediately ran off through the woods. I had thanked him over and over in the truck on the drive back but he didn’t respond to me once. I could only hope that once he calmed down he would realize what a good thing we did and that by doing so we protected his pack as well as the Cullens.

Carlisle grilled me on every detail of my visit with Aro. He wanted to know every single word that was said. He assured me when I finished that he would do everything possible to get me out of my agreement. I knew that he and Aro went back a long time and had quite a history together, but I wasn’t convinced he would be able to do anything. I was still fairly certain that I’d be under Aro’s command for at least the next year. I tried to block it from my mind. I couldn’t even begin to comprehend what he was going to have me do for him.

After Carlisle was done interrogating me, I insisted that Edward go hunting as his eyes were coal black, the darkest I had ever seen them. Esme and Alice went with him so I hung out with Carlisle, Rosalie, Jasper and Emmett.

I started getting extremely anxious when two hours had passed and they hadn’t returned yet. Edward never stayed out that long when hunting around home. Carlisle tried to reassure me by telling me they were fine while Emmett and Jasper laughed and made fun of my nervousness.

Thirty minutes later, just when I thought for sure I was going to lose my mind, they returned, but they were not alone. Edward was the first through the door. I could immediately tell by the expression on his face that he wasn’t happy. A minute later Alice and Esme walked in followed by Jane, Alec, Demetri and a three other Volturi members I had never seen before.

“We have company,” Edward scowled as he walked passed Carlisle and pulled me close to his side.

“Hello Jane. Thank you so much for coming. Welcome to our home,” Carlisle hospitably greeted them.

“Carlisle, it’s nice to see you again. Aro sends his regards,” Jane replied.

After all the pleasantries were finished, Carlisle proceeded to tell the Volturi coven everything that I had already told them but more eloquently, and with much more detail. Demetri asked if someone would take him to the last place of contact with Megan’s clan so he could pick up their scent and begin tracking them. Carlisle and Esme agreed to go with them and he instructed the rest of us to head on over to my house.

When we got home Charlie wasn’t there yet. I was a little concerned because it was six o’clock but figured he was just working late on the missing persons cases.

I went to the kitchen first to see what I could take out to make for dinner. I felt like I hadn’t eaten in weeks.

“Bella, why don’t you go upstairs and take a nice bath and relax. You’ve been through a lot these past two days. Go on, I’ll fix you something to eat,” Edward casually offered.

“Do I smell that bad?”

He laughed. “You know you could never smell bad to me. Your scent is always the sweetest I have ever known.”

“Oh…yeah…sorry.” I momentarily forgot about the blood thing. “Ok, well, thanks. I could definitely use a shower.”

I went directly to our one, small bathroom and sat in the shower letting the hot water pour over me. I thought if I sat there long enough that my deal with Aro, the Volturi being here, and Megan still waiting to pounce on us would wash off of me and flow out the drain. It didn’t work.

I put on my robe and walked to my room. When I opened the doors I couldn’t believe my eyes. There were a thousand candles flickering in every nook and cranny of the room. A beautiful, new silver comforter adorned the bed which was covered from top to bottom in red rose petals. The CD Edward had made for my 18th birthday was playing softly in the background, and the black nightgown he gave me hung outside my closet door.

I was so taken aback by the amazing beauty of it all that it took me a minute to realize what was going on. The time had gone by so quickly traveling back and forth to Italy that I didn’t even realize it was already Thursday. My heart started thumping so loudly it was drowning out the music.

I walked over to look at the amazing nightgown again when I noticed a small box with a ribbon on it sitting on my nightstand. I picked it up to read the gift tag that was attached to it.

Bella,

Enjoy your special night.

Love always,

Alice

My hands were shaking so badly I was barely able to take the ribbon off. I gasped out loud when I saw the beautiful pearl necklace and matching teardrop earrings.

I was trembling so much it took me several minutes to actually secure the clasp around my neck. I slid the dainty earrings in and slipped the silk nightgown over my head. I nervously walked back to the bathroom so I could get a look at myself. I knew I was never going to give these beautiful things the justice they deserved. Alice and Rosalie could pull this off, I surely couldn’t.

I stunned myself when I finally got the nerve to take a look. For the first time in my life, I felt pretty. I was sure it was the nightgown and jewelry but I didn’t care. I felt sexy and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

After I was done blow drying my hair and putting on a little mascara, blush and lipstick, the trembling grew more intense and the butterflies flying around my stomach turned into frogs, repeatedly jumping up and down on my organs. I knew I was going to have to go see him now. This was it. The moment I had been waiting for was finally here.

The muscles in my legs luckily held up long enough to get me down the stairs. It wasn’t looking too good at first. When I got to the kitchen my jaw dropped. There were candles everywhere, just like in my room, with soft music playing in the background. There were a dozen red roses in the center of the table and a plate with a steak, baked potato, and broccoli sitting next to a plate loaded with chocolate covered strawberries.

As breathtaking as everything was, nothing compared to how he looked when he walked in from the living room. He had changed into a sleek tuxedo complete with all the trimmings, including a bow tie. His hair was perfectly tussled and his golden brown eyes cut me to the core. My blood was racing so rapidly I had to pray that I wouldn’t pass out.

He swaggered across the kitchen, never letting his eyes leave mine. Before I could catch my breath, he had his arms around me and gently pressed his lips against mine.

He pulled me away from him, but still held on to both of my hands as he gazed up and down my body.

“You are stunning.” He whispered, as if talking to himself, not to me.

He pulled me in close to him and kissed me again. “It is I who am truly dazzled tonight,” he smiled. “You look amazing, Bella.”

“I don’t know of a word that describes how I feel right now, Edward. Dazzled doesn’t even come close.”

“So you approve then?” He smiled, turning around, showing off his tux.

“Oh, I definitely approve,” I replied, barely able to get the words out. He literally took my breath away.

“C’mon,” he grinned. “Let’s get you something to eat.”

“How…how did you do all this, Edward?” I asked as he pulled my chair out for me.”

“Well, I can’t take all of the credit. Alice and Esme helped me earlier this afternoon. I just basically had to light the candles when you were in the shower.”

“So that’s why you were gone so long earlier. I wish you would have told me, Edward. I was really worried about you.”

“You were worried about me? Bella, do you really want to get into this conversation right now?” He looked at me skeptically, with the one eye-brow lift.

“Uh…no…I guess not,” I mumbled, forgetting he hadn’t yet lectured me yet on how wrong it was going to Italy.

After I’d finished the incredible meal, that was no doubt cooked by Esme or Alice, Edward led me to the living room. He lifted me effortlessly with one arm and put my feet on top of his feet like he had done at prom. Even though I usually hated dancing, I didn’t mind it now; it was just another way I could be close to him. I laid my head on his shoulder as he held me tightly and rocked us back and forth to the music. There were some moments in life where words weren’t necessary. This was one of them.

As we swayed to the music, he lifted my chin with his finger. We starred into each other’s eyes so intensely we could see each other’s souls. I reached my lips towards him and he met me halfway. We kissed slowly at first, still dancing for a minute or two before things started heating up. I stepped off his feet and pulled him as close to me as I could. He didn’t pull away. Our kiss grew stronger with every heart beat until neither one of us could take it anymore.

“Bella…are…are you sure about this?” He stuttered out between kisses.

I pulled away so he could see the seriousness in my eyes and would have do doubts.

“I’m sure Edward. I’ve never been so sure about anything in my life.”

He returned my serious look for a long minute, then swooped me up in his arms and carried me upstairs, kissing me every step of the way.

He gently set me on the bed with one arm and pulled the covers back with the other. If the excitement alone wasn’t enough to cause me to hyperventilate, the fear that had started creeping up inside me was certainly going to finish the job. It wasn’t a fear of him hurting me, but a fear of the unknown. I had never experienced this before and even though I knew what it was like to be close and passionate with him, I didn’t really know what to expect, or in turn know what he expected of me. What if I disappointed him?

I looked up and watched him as he walked to the end of the bed and started taking his bow tie off. He had turned off the lights so the only illumination in the room came from the soft, flickering candles. The flecks of light sparkled and bounced off his beautiful, white skin.

“Why don’t you let me do that for you,” I whispered.

I went to him and finished untying his bowtie and threw it on the floor. As I slowly unbuttoned his shirt, never letting my eyes leave his, I realized my hands weren’t trembling anymore. They masterfully got through every button as if they were working on their own will. I began kissing his stone chest as I slid his shirt off his muscular arms. I moved my mouth down lower, kissing his stomach, savoring the deliciousness of him with every lick of my tongue. I took off his belt with remarkable speed and ease and slid his pants down to the floor. He moaned and grabbed my shoulders, pulling me slowly up until my lips softly met his.

He pushed me away and lifted my arms above my head with one hand, slowly pulling the black nightgown over them and off with the other. He scooped me up in both arms and walked us back over to the bed. He cuddled up next to me and started kissing my neck. “Bella, I said I would try. If I begin to hurt you, you have to promise to let me know,” he whispered, his mouthwatering scent washing over me.

“I promise, Edward,” I breathed with utter excitement.

His lips moved back and forth from my neck to my lips while he tenderly ran his cold hands along my body, letting them roam into uncharted territories. The ice from his fingers turned into streaks of fire as they caressed me, and I found myself melting from the intense heat.

I felt every muscle in my body uncontrollably heave with excitement underneath him. I didn’t know what the end result of this would feel like but I was pretty sure I was almost there. I couldn’t take waiting a minute longer so I flipped him over and straddled my legs across him. I leaned down and furiously kissed his lips as he grabbed my hair and pulled me as close to him as I could possibly get. I don’t know if it was just my imagination but I could have sworn his body was almost as hot as mine. I moved to his side and began kissing his neck, breathing my excitement and desire for him into his ear. He moaned as I let my fingers glide down his smooth, marble body, inspecting every inch of him. I got back on top of him and straddled my legs across him again, frantically kissing, licking him, and rubbing my body against his.

He continued kissing me with fury when I noticed his moaning had turned into what sounded like a growl. I pulled my face away from his and was immediately saddened by the pained, tormented look in his eyes. I should have never taken over control like I did. He was moving slowly for a reason.

I carefully pulled myself off of him and laid beside him, tucking my head under his neck. After I was able to gain control of my breathing after a few minutes, I apologized. “I’m so sorry, Edward. It looks like you’re not going to be the problem here, I am.”

“Bella, you have nothing to apologize for.” His tone undeniably screamed self-loathing. “I’m the monster, not you.”

“Edward Anthony Masen Cullen,” I replied in my most stern voice. “There is no way you are going to blame this on yourself. You were doing just fine, great actually. I’m the one who lost control, not you. I’m tired of you always blaming yourself for things that are in no way your fault.”

“Wow, Edward Anthony Masen Cullen,” he chuckled. “I feel like I’m about to be grounded or something.”

“Well, you are. I am grounding you to this bed and you can never leave.”

“That’s not a punishment, that’s a reward,” he faintly smiled, running his fingers through me hair.

“Yeah, a reward for me,” I replied as I grabbed his face with both hands and kissed him again.

The tension had seemingly disappeared as we laid wrapped in each other’s arms. “Should we try again?” He surprisingly whispered.

“Are you serious?” I replied.

“It would be a shame to waste all this candlelight, don’t you think?” He grinned. “Just do me a favor and let me take the lead this time. Deal?”

“Deal,” I whispered as I melted into his embrace.

Before we could even get started again it was over. Edward was being summoned to the back woods by Alice.

He ran downstairs and to my disappointment he came back fully dressed in his normal clothes. “Is everything ok Edward? Is Alice alright? Did she see something?”

“Everything’s fine from what I can tell. Demetri caught Megan’s scent and they are tracking her now. We just need to decide what we’re going to do when he finds them.

“Do you really have to go?” I reached my arms out to him as I still laid in bed.

“You have no idea how much I hate to leave you,” he responded as he walked over to kiss me. “Especially like this,” he grinned, as I was still unclothed.

“Oh,” I replied, wrapping the sheet around me.

“Don’t be embarrassed,” he whispered, slowly lowering the sheets down again. “You are so beautiful, Bella. There is nothing you need to hide from me.”

I was hypnotized by his gaze and the familiar tingle swept over my body. “You can’t just do that to me and leave. It isn’t fair.”

He chuckled, obviously pleased with himself that he could arouse me so easily. “I’ll be back soon.”

I threw my robe on to go downstairs and clean up before Charlie got home but of course it was already done. I was sure Esme or Alice had snuck in to do it as Edward, even with his super speed, wasn’t downstairs long enough. I laughed to myself thinking, “how many Cullens does it take to seduce Bella Swan?”

Charlie had gotten back before Edward returned. I was able to get my room back to normal right before he walked up the stairs and knocked on my door. “Can I come in?”

“Yeah, sure Dad,” I answered.

“Hiya Bells, how was your shopping trip?”

“Oh, you know; miserable as always. How was the game?”

“Oh, Bells, it was amazing! The seats were incredible and meeting the guys after the game was even better. Billy and I had the time of our lives. Is Edward coming over tomorrow? I really need to thank him again.”

“Um…yeah, I’m sure he’ll be here at some point. I’ll be sure to thank him for you.”

“That would be great. Well, I’m going to hit the hay. This old guy has had enough excitement for one day. Sweet dreams, Bells. It’s good to have you back home again.”

“Good night, Dad. I’ll see you in the morning.”

Edward was waiting outside the window waiting for Charlie to leave. I went to get him a towel as he was soaking wet from the rain.

“So? How’d it go?” I asked.

“Well, it looks like Demetri was able to track them down pretty easily. They’re still in Port Angeles. We are all going to meet at the house tomorrow to discuss what we are going to do. Jane doesn’t want to wait much longer. She wants to have everything cleaned up by tomorrow night.”

“Tomorrow night? Oh, Edward, will you be ready?”

“Yes Bella. And thanks to you we are even more prepared. Megan doesn’t stand a chance with Jane and the rest of the Volturi here now to help us.”

“So, I did a good thing then. C’mon, admit it Edward.”

“I’ll admit that I do feel much more confident about our chances now that they are here, but I will never admit that what you did was a good thing. Don’t forget, we are going to have to pay an ugly price for their protection.”

“Not we, Edward, me. The agreement had nothing to do with you.”

“Sure it did Bella. Aro has been wanting me to join him for years. He knew that by getting you to agree to his terms that I would have no choice but to assist you in whatever it is he wants you to do. But let’s not worry about that now. It’s late, you should get some sleep.”

As I laid there in his arms in the darkness, sleep was hard to come by. What did I get myself into? What did I get him into? What did I get us into?
