Chapter 7: Visions

Edward cleared off the black leather sofa in his room. He sat down and then patted the cushion, signaling for me to sit by him. “Bella, before I start, I want you to know that there is no need for you to get upset. Hear me out before you start to lose it ok?”

“OK.” Wow, I guess it is pretty evident I am usually a basket case. I mean, I knew it, I just didn’t think it was that evident to everyone else.

“I need you to promise me something before I start.” His eyes, serious and smoldering, burrowing into mine like he was trying to will me to do something.

“What is it?”

“I need you to know I love you. I mean really, finally, deep down in your soul realize that I love you more than anything in this world and I am yours until the day you decide you don’t want me anymore. I also need you to know that what I am about to tell you means nothing.”

“Ok Edward, you are really scaring me now. What is it?”

“No, not until you promise.”

“I promise. I know that you love me. Now what is it? You are freaking me out here.”

“Well, as you know, Megan has been playing some serious mind games with me since we met.”

“Really? I hadn’t noticed.” He smiled at my sarcastic tone.

“Remember how I told you that when I read her mind that it was more like she was trying to tell me something instead of just thinking it? Like she knew I could somehow hear her?”

“Yes, I remember.”

“On Friday in class, something changed. I don’t really even know how to explain it. It was like she was showing me something. Something, I don’t know, that seemed almost real, even though it wasn’t. It was like I was watching something on a movie. I was there in the movie, but then again I wasn’t. I just…..I can’t make heads or tails out of it. But it was something like I have never experienced before in anyone’s mind. It was like I wasn’t actually reading her mind; I was in the scene of her movie.”

“Why do you think that is?” I was trying hard to let him finish and not think about what it was she showed him.

“I don’t know. When I was explaining it to Alice, Jasper and Carlisle, Alice said it sounded like one of her visions. She said her visions were like that, like watching a movie of things that were going to happen. Carlisle seems to think that maybe since I spend so much time in Alice’s head and we are so in sync with each other that somehow I may be…..I may be absorbing her power.” He nervously looked over at me to see my reaction.

I suddenly felt my body go numb and I felt myself not being able to breathe again. “So what you are seeing is…. is the future?” This couldn’t be happening. I thought I was about to be sick.

“No. It isn’t like that. Carlisle is wrong. It wasn’t like I was seeing the future, it was like it was happening right there and then, but it couldn’t have been happening. It is so hard to explain. I don’t understand it.” I could see the confusion in his eyes but his voice was fading in and out as I was finding it more and more difficult to keep my heart beating at a rate where it wouldn’t explode out of my chest.

“Edward, what was it exactly that you saw?” I couldn’t look at him.

“Bella, that isn’t important. It doesn’t matter what I saw, it was the way I saw it.”

“How can you sit here and say it doesn’t matter? What if Carlisle is right? What if you are seeing the future?”

“He isn’t right!” His voice was full of anger now.

“Edward, you have to tell me. I don’t think I could stand it if I didn’t know now.”

He grabbed my hands in his more tightly than he ever has before. It was actually hurting me a little. “Bella, please, I beg of you, don’t make me do this. It doesn’t matter. It will just unnecessarily hurt you.” His voice and eyes were now pained instead of angered.

“I need to know Edward.” My voice was barely a whisper.

“Will you remember your promise?”

I just nodded my head. I couldn’t remember what my promise was at this very moment.

“It was like I was watching a movie with her…and me….we were …..together.”

“Together how Edward?” I was about to lose it, just as he had predicted.

Together, Bella.”

I wanted to get up and run, or jump out his window, something, anything. I was suffocating. I was trying to free my hands but his grip wasn’t letting me go anywhere.

“Bella, please, this is what I told you not to lose it over. It doesn’t mean anything.”

A moment passed. “Bella? Bella, please breathe… please say something.”

I tried to talk but couldn’t find my voice.

“Bella, please, I am begging you. Say something. Your silence is unbearable.”

I looked up at him and saw the terrified look on his face. It was like he was quietly sobbing without any tears.

“What do you want me to say Edward?” Even though I could barely muster a thought, I had to say something; he looked like he was hurting too badly.

He let go of my hands and put his hands on my face. “Just tell me what you are thinking. I am so afraid of what you are thinking.”

“I don’t honestly know what I am thinking. I….I don’t know.” The inevitable tears started rolling down my face as I thought about him seeing himself with her….together as he put it.

“Bella,” his hands still holding my face. “Listen to me. I don’t know what this was but I do know that it is not a vision of the future like Alice has. That wouldn’t…couldn’t ever happen, I love you too much. You are my destiny and I would never do anything to jeopardize that. Please, you have to believe me. You promised you believed me.”

He grabbed me up with one arm and sat me on his lap as I cried uncontrollably. I was shaking both from the crying and from the coldness of his body so he grabbed the afghan sitting on his couch and wrapped me up in it.

I don’t know how long we sat there in silence, him rocking me in his arms. When I finally stopped crying he lifted my chin up as if he was trying to figure out what I was thinking.

“Bella, I am so sorry. Nothing pains me more in this world than seeing you upset. I didn’t want to tell you because it wasn’t real and never could be. This pain I am causing you is so unnecessary. Remind me to thank Alice again for this.”

I was finally able to speak again, “Edward, if you honestly believe this is nothing, not a vision of the future, then why did you try to keep it from me?”

“Because I knew that once I told you what Carlisle thought it would hurt you, that you would believe it because it so much easier for you to believe the bad stuff instead of the good when it comes to how I feel about you. You already seem to doubt my feelings for you so much lately I didn’t want to add any fuel to the fire.”

“Bella, this whole thing means nothing. I promise you it was nothing. It wasn’t the future, it wasn’t something I was thinking of or fantasizing about; it was just some sort of mind trick she was playing. This would never happen I promise you.”

“I believe you Edward. I do. It’s….it’s just….”

“What? Tell me please. You are killing me.”

“It’s just, even though it wasn’t technically your thoughts, you saw it. You saw yourself with her. You saw how it would be with her. You have that vision with her that you couldn’t possibly have with me.”

“Bella! Do you actually think I have never envisioned myself with you?!” He looked stunned.

“Sweetheart, let me tell you something. I envision us being together every day of my existence. Just because I have more self control than you, I have to have more self control, doesn’t mean I don’t want to be with you more than I have ever wanted anything in my life.”

“When I think of what it will be like being with you, I can barely keep my composure. I am a gentleman so I won’t get into too much detail,” he did the sexy one eyebrow lift again, “but the human feelings you bring out in me are, in a word, overwhelming. Just kissing you brings unbelievable feelings. It makes me feel like I am actually alive again. When I saw this, this illusion or whatever it was with her, it brought up no feelings whatsoever. But with you? When I see us together… it’s magical. It is the ultimate bliss. I actually tremble at the thought of it.

He grabbed my face and moved his lips slowly, carefully upon mine. “Do you feel that?” He kissed me again. “That is an undeniable force. It is going to happen with us one way or the other, Bella, there is no way it couldn’t. I know this final act we don’t seem to be able to get to is one of the main reasons you doubt my feelings for you but I am not avoiding it because I don’t want you. Nothing could be further from the truth. We just have to be sure I can handle it and that every precaution is in place so I don’t hurt you. Trust me, I want this just as much or even more than you do.

He kissed me again, sending a bolt of electricity through my spine. “I seriously doubt that,” I muttered, breathless.

He grinned and looked relieved for the first time since our conversation started, “let’s just say it is a tie shall we?” He pulled my head into his shoulder and held me so tight I couldn’t breathe. I didn’t care.

“Edward, you really believe this is not a vision?” I couldn’t help but ask again.

“Yes my love, I honestly believe it isn’t. I know it isn’t.”

“Edward?”

“Yes?”

“What are the chances you will turn me tonight so I can go kick her ass?” I was only half kidding.

He chuckled, “You know, that is your most convincing argument yet. I may have to give this some thought.”

It was time for me to get back to Charlie’s so I could fix him some dinner. I tried to be chatty on the drive home so Edward wouldn’t feel bad thinking I was still obsessing about what he told me earlier. I was trying hard not to but it kept popping into my head.

Edward didn’t come in as he needed to go hunting. As always, he promised he would be back when Charlie was asleep.

The hours passed by slowly while Edward was gone. I cooked Charlie’s dinner, emailed Renee and did some homework. I had just started listening to my IPod when in a flash Edward was through my window and sitting on my bed.

“Edward, what’s wrong?” His expression was distant, worried.

“They did it again. Alice saw them but she saw them too late. They killed three more people tonight, college students.”

“Where? Was it on campus?” I knew that most other vampires were not like Edward and his family, only drinking animal blood, but it still terrified me every time I heard about it.

“No Bella, it happened right here in Forks.” His voice was tense and his fists were tightly clinched. “They didn’t even bother cleaning up their mess. They just left it out in the open.”

“Wha….What? What are they doing in Forks?”

“We don’t really know. But this is getting serious now. They are way too close to us and way too careless. We have to do something.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Alice is going to invite them to our house on Monday. Carlisle will explain to them the territory rules and hopefully that will be the end of it.”

“What if they don’t listen? What will you do then?”

“Well, we would have two options. The first would be to go to the Volturi and let them know of their carelessness and they would take care of it. We obviously don’t want to go that route because it will just bring your situation into the spotlight and we don’t want that to happen.”

Ah, the Volturi. I had almost managed to put that out of mind with the whole Megan thing going on. I almost forgot they were watching me; that we had promised the Volturi that I would be changed into one of them soon because it was against their rules to have a human know of their existence.

He continued, “Option two would be to take care of them ourselves. Carlisle already called Emmitt and Rosalie and they are on their way back from Dartmouth.”

Option two didn’t sound much better to me. Even though Edward was incredibly strong and the Cullens were a force to be reckoned with, it terrified me that he might have to put himself in a dangerous situation.

He could see I was worried so he sidled up next to me and put his arms around me. “Try not to worry about it. Carlisle is hopeful that everything will go fine on Monday when he talks to them.”

“So, they are coming to your house?” The thought of her being in Edward’s house made me cringe.

“Yes, they are, but I won’t be there.” He smiled as if he knew that would make me feel better.

“But Edward, how can you not be there? You have to be, so you know what they are thinking.”

“I thought you would be happy that I wasn’t going to be there?” He looked confused.

“Of course I don’t like the thought of you in the same room with her but not as much as I don’t like the thought of them putting you and your family in danger. You need to be there Edward. I will come with you.”

“Bella, there is no need for you to be involved. If things go badly, I don’t want you anywhere near there.”

I glared at him. We have been through this before.

He sighed at my look “You are so stubborn. I guess there is no way to talk you out of this is there?”

“Nope.”

“Fine. But you will listen to me and do exactly as I say if things take a turn for the worse.”

“Don’t I always?”

He didn’t answer but did give me the infamous one eyebrow lift.

Monday got here way too quickly. While I was hoping that Carlisle’s talk tonight would work and they would move on, I couldn’t help but feel anxious that things might not go as planned.

When we got to photography class, Megan, Alexis and Nathan were already there.

As we took our seats Megan got up, walked over to us and sat on Edward’s Desk.

“Do you mind?” Edward gave her a disgusted look.

“No, I don’t mind at all. Hello Edward.” She looked at him for minute, salivating over him like she always did; then turned to look at me, “I’m sorry, what was your name again?”

“It is Be….”

“Her name is Bella,” Edward interrupted. “Can we help you with something?”

“No, not really. I just wanted to tell you I talked with Alice and we are really looking forward to seeing you tonight, in a more private setting.” She smiled at him, showing her perfect pearly whites again.

“Yes, well, we are all in a very small area. It will be nice to get to know each other better.” Edward hardly ever lied which was a good thing. He wasn’t very good at it.

“Yes, it will be very nice. I will see you tonight then.” She gracefully got up from the desk and went back to her coven buddies.

On the way home Alice, Edward and Jasper were talking. They had decided to rule out that Megan could read minds as she would have seen what they were thinking. That if the “talk” didn’t work they would have to take more drastic measures. They would have never agreed to come if they thought something was up.

They dropped me off at Charlie’s and Edward said he would be back to pick me up around 6:00 tonight. When I got in the house I saw Charlie holding another police file and was talking on the phone, “Yeah, OK. I will see you soon.”

“Hi Dad, what’s up?” I didn’t really have to ask. Charlie was the Chief of Police. I am sure he heard about the killings on Friday night.

“Not good news Bells. Three people were murdered outside of the hardware store on Friday night.”

“Oh my God, was it anyone we knew?” I tried to sound surprised.

“We are still trying to identify the bodies. I have never seen anything this brutal in my 25 years on the force.”

“Dad, I don’t mean to sound cold but, why are you working on this? You are still supposed to be on medical leave.”

“Bella, I have almost finished my time. I am fine. The people in Forks depend on me and this is one of our darkest hours. I am going to do my job.”

I knew that Charlie meant it and there was no way I was going to convince him otherwise. “Will you at least promise me you won’t be working 24 hours a day and you will get some rest? You do have other people on the force that can help you know.”

“I promise I will get some rest. But right now I have to go to the station. Oh, and Bells, can you have Edward and Alice come stay with you while I am gone? I don’t know what kind of crazy nut job is out there so I don’t want you to be here alone.”

“Actually I am going over to the Cullens in a little while. Edward will be picking me up soon.”

“Ok, well, be sure you don’t go anywhere by yourself. It isn’t safe right now.” He put on his police jacket and smiled like it was an old, lost friend he hadn’t seen in years. “I’ll see you later.”

Edward picked me up and we got to his house about 6:30. Their guests were supposed to arrive around 7:00.

Rosalie and Emmitt were back. Emmitt gave me a big bear hug lifting my body about 2 feet off of the floor then put me down and spun me around. He laughed and said he was shocked I didn’t have any new scars or broken bones. I saw Edward out of the corner of my eye trying not to laugh. Rosalie said hello but for the most part was her usual, not-liking-me self.

Alice, Jasper, Carlisle and Esme came downstairs so now the whole family was there. It reminded me of an intervention. Everyone being there, waiting for the alcoholic to come in so they can tell him how his problem was hurting them. They were all very casual, talking and laughing like they didn’t have a care in the world.

At precisely 7:00 there doorbell rang. I have noticed in my time with Edward that vampires were very anal-retentive when it came to being on time.

Carlisle and Esme went to the door to greet them. Edward sat me down on the couch very close to him. He had one arm around my shoulder and was rubbing my hand with the other.

They exchanged pleasantries at the door and Carlisle invited them in. It was so normal. It was like friends coming over for a dinner party and a game of cards.

Nathan was the first one I saw. He had his jet black hair greased back which showed off his stunning white face and black eyes. Alexis followed. Her curly dirty-blonde hair hung down around her neck. It was the first time I saw her without a ponytail, she was pretty either way. And then there she was, Megan. Even though I despised her I couldn’t help but marvel in her perfectness. Her black hair hung all the way down her back. She wasn’t as pale as the others. It was almost like she had some kind of a vampire tan. She must have had very rich, dark skin before her change. Her makeup was flawless. You couldn’t help but stare at her beautiful full lips hidden under a layer of bright pink, shiny lip gloss.

“Welcome to our home,” Carlisle said as he closed the front door. “I would like you to meet Emmitt and Rosalie and I think you know everyone else.”

Everyone said hi and shook hands like they were at a church social. It was very strange to watch. When Megan got over to us she smiled, “Hello again Edward. Hi, Bella is it?” Ugh. This was going to be harder than I thought. Edward nodded at her without saying a word and leaned over to kiss me on the head. It didn’t seem to phase her.

“So Megan,” Carlisle started the conversation. “What brings you to Washington?”

“Well, it was time for us to move on from our last location. We heard of this area from a friend of yours in Alaska, Tanya.”

“Ah, so you know Tanya.” Carlisle’s voice was pleasant.

“Yes, we met her a few years back when we were passing through. They seem to be very fond of your family, your very special family.”

“So they told you about our hunting activities and how we try to keep a low profile around here I presume?”

“Yes, she did, amongst a few other tidbits.”

Carlisle looked interested, “I didn’t think there were any other tidbits to be told.”

“Well, she happened to mention Alice’s little gift of seeing the future and of course, Edward’s special ability. But, of course Edward already knows that doesn’t he?”

Edward didn’t say a word. He refused to look at her.

“That was some conversation you must have had. I didn’t realize Tanya was so talkative,” Carlisle laughed as if it was nothing.

“She was very friendly to us while we were there.”

Carlisle went on to explain that their hunting habits were becoming a problem for them. Since the Cullens maintained a permanent residence here they couldn’t afford any kind of trouble. He also went on to explain that their way of living was very doable and that maybe Megan, Alexis and Nathan should think about changing their ways.

Megan laughed, “it is a very interesting idea but I think we are quite content with our way of living. We will however be sure to do our hunting outside of the area so we don’t cause you anymore trouble. After all, we wouldn’t want to do anything to affect our new friendship.” She smiled at Edward.

“Excellent,” Carlisle stated as if he was very pleased that his efforts turned out this way. “Well then, I hope you will come back and visit our home again soon.”

“We will plan on doing just that,” she was looking at Edward again.

A couple of minutes later everyone said goodbye, except for Edward and me. We hadn’t moved from our position on the couch.

“So I think that went well,” Carlisle said with the same tone of satisfaction in his voice. “Edward, what do you think?”

Edward kissed me on top of my head again and stood up. “I think they meant what they said. Megan, well, she only had the same old thing on her mind,” he glanced down at me with an apologetic look; and the other two, they don’t really think of anything except where they are going to get their next meal. They must be younger than her, disciplined, but still as thirsty as some younglings.”

Everyone was feeling relieved so we just hung out catching up on Emmitt and Rosalie’s adventures at Dartmouth. It had been a few weeks since we saw them. We were laughing, having fun until we looked over at Alice, suddenly frozen with a look of horror on her face. A couple of seconds later I saw the same look come over Edward.

“Alice, tell me we aren’t too late.” I have never seen him look more terrified.

“What time is it?” Alice shrieked in her high-pitch voice.

“It is 9:15,” Emmitt said looking confused.

“Edward,” Alice said panicked. The clock said 9:05! Bella, I am so, so sorry! I don’t know why I saw it too late!”

“Edward, what does she mean? What is she sorry about it?!” I felt the familiar feeling of terror come over me.

“They lied Carlisle,” Edward’s fists and teeth were clenched. “They lied and I didn’t see it.”

“Edward!” I cried out, “what is she sorry about?”

“Bella, it’s Charlie. They must have tracked your scent……”

“What?” My ears started ringing and the room began to spin.

“I am so sorry Bella, I should have seen it sooner,” Alice look horrified.

“Edward, what do you mean they tracked my scent? Did they….did they hurt him?”

I am so sorry Bella.” Edward was holding my shoulders with his hands.

“No!” I screamed. “No! This can’t be happening. Edward take me home, now.

“Bella, I don’t think…”

Now Edward!”

Carlisle jumped in, “Edward, Alice, I will go with you and Bella. Emmitt, Rosalie, Esme, Jasper, you follow behind us and search the area near Bella’s house. We need to act fast.”
