Chapter 8: Fooled

Edward threw me on his back and before I knew it we were in the back seat of Carlisle’s car speeding down the long and winding road.

“Edward, what is going on? How is Charlie?” I was sobbing uncontrollably.

“I am so sorry Bella,” he replied as he was holding me tightly in his arms.

“Why…..why do you keep saying you’re sorry…?”

“Bella, shhhhh…….shhhhhh,” His hands were rubbing my back. I saw him look at Carlisle’s eyes through the reflection of the rear view mirror. Carlisle nodded as if to say yes.

“Edward just tell me!” I couldn’t stand not knowing anymore. Was he hurt, dead…a new vampire?

“Bella,” he now had his hands on my cheeks, using his thumbs to wipe away my tears. “Sweetheart, it isn’t good news. I am so, so sorry.”

Everything started turning black and his voice started to fade, “Bella, stay with me. Bella, can you hear me? C’mon Bella, stay with me my love.”

I don’t know how long I was lost in the darkness but I was awoke by a cold chill running through by body. I started to see light again and realized I was on Edward’s lap. He had me cradled like a newborn baby and was holding me tightly against his chest. The car wasn’t moving anymore. I opened my eyes and everything looked blurry through the huge tears clouding my eyes. I lifted my head in a daze and started to hear their familiar voices. Edward and Carlisle were talking.

“Are you sure Edward?” I heard Carlisle say. There was a surprised tone to his voice.

“Yes. I am positive!” Edward sounded confused but I could tell he was talking through a smile.

“Edward?” He looked surprised to see me awake. He squeezed me tight.

“Bella! Oh Bella, he is ok! I don’t know how, but he is ok!” He squeezed me tight again and let out a huge sigh like he had been holding his breath for 5 minutes.

“Edward how can this be? What about Alice’s vision?” Carlisle looked like he was in shock.

“I don’t know. They must have changed their minds.”

“Edward,” I interrupted. “What is going on?” The tears were still coming but not as heavily as a moment ago.

“I don’t know Bella. Alice saw Megan, Nathan and Alexis here at your house. They had attacked Charlie. But, I don’t know, they must have changed their minds.”

A wave of relief swept over me.

“Edward,” Carlisle looked puzzled and worried. “This doesn’t make any sense. When Alice sees the future it can change if people change their minds. But what she saw had already happened.”

“I know,” Edward replied. “Maybe she was wrong about seeing the time on the clock. I don’t see any other explanation for it.”

“Alice is never wrong about details like this. Something is way off here.” Carlisle looked deep in thought. “Edward, you need to stay here with Bella and Charlie tonight. I will round up the others and we will sweep the area and watch the house tonight. Something tells me that whatever is going on isn’t near over. We will convene at the house in the morning to figure out what we should do next.”

The wave of relief I felt just seconds earlier suddenly retracted like the ocean going back into the sea at low tide.

Edward grabbed my face with his hands “Bella, are you ok?”

“Yeah, I think so, just confused.”

“As am I,” he replied. “But we will figure this out. We will be safe for tonight and tomorrow we will take care of them one way or the other.”

It was hard not to believe him. Whenever he promised me he would protect me he always did. My number would have been up several times before this if it weren’t for Edward and his family.

“Bella, why don’t you go on in Sweetheart and I will meet you upstairs.” He kissed my head and looked at me trying to smile.

I sat there but for some reason couldn’t bring myself to get out of the car.

“It’s ok Bella. He is fine, I promise. Go on in.”

Edward got out of the car and grabbed my hand to help me out. He gave me a hug and then gave me a gentle shove to get my feet walking towards the door.

“Hey Bells,” I heard as I slowly walked towards the living room. I never thought I would enjoy hearing a sound more than I enjoyed hearing Edward’s voice but I was wrong. Those two words were the sweetest I have ever heard.

“Hey Dad. How are you feeling?” I tried to not look directly at him. I didn’t want him to see that I had been crying.

“I’ve been better.”

Worry consumed me instantaneously again, “What’s wrong? Is it your heart?”

“No, no, it is nothing like that. Physically I feel fine. I am just sickened by the hardware store murders. I have never seen anything like it Bells and as of right now I have no leads.”

“Yeah, I actually thought you would still be at the station when I got home.” I couldn’t tell him that I really expected him to be dead.

“Well, I didn’t want to go against doctor’s orders so I just brought some things home with me to work on. I knew if I was there too long I would incur the wrath of my nurse,” he looked at me and smiled. I couldn’t help but smile back.

“Have you had any dinner yet Dad? I can go make you something?”

“No, I already had some of your leftover veggie lasagna. I am fine Bells.”

I knew Edward was waiting so I told Charlie I was going to turn in.

It was something I rarely did as Charlie and I were not big on emotional displays of affection but I couldn’t help myself. I went over and gave him a hug.

“Um, What was that for?” He looked happy and uncomfortable at the same time.

“Good night Dad.”

“Good night Bells.”

When I got to my room Edward was sitting in the rocking chair in the corner.

“Hey,” I said as I plopped on the bed. I was emotionally exhausted.

“Hello again,” He didn’t smile. That was never a good sign.

“What a long day huh?” I asked hoping he would tell me what he was thinking.

“Yes indeed.”

Ugh. I was too tired to have to fight his thoughts out of him. I fluffed up my pillow and sat back against my headboard. It took him a few minutes but he finally came over and sat next to me. He didn’t put his arm around me so I lifted it for him, put it over my shoulders and curled up to him lying my head on his cold chest.

He sighed and kissed me on the back of my head. “Are you ok?”

“Yeah, just tired.”

“I am so sorry Bella. I am so sorry we devastated you for no reason.” The pain was back in his voice.

“Edward, it wasn’t your fault.”

“It is always my fault. Every bad thing that has happened in your life since we met has been my fault.”

“Please, Edward, let’s not do this again. I am too tired. We always disagree on this subject. You think you put my life in danger, I think you save me from danger. Let’s just agree to disagree.”

“Whatever you like.” There was no change in his tone.

“So, should I be scared? Do you think they are coming for us?”

“I don’t think so. Even if they tried everyone is right outside so you and Charlie will be safe.”

“I hate that they are all out there. It isn’t fair to them.”

“They don’t mind Bella. They love you. They would do anything to be sure you are safe.”

“They always do make sure I am safe, just like you.”

I could feel his jaw tense up on top of my head, “yeah, just like me.” He didn’t say anything else which was fine. I couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore.

I opened my eyes and it was light outside. Not a bright light, as it was raining as usual, but there was no doubt it was morning. I stretched and leaned over expecting Edward to be there but the bed was empty on his side.

“Good morning.”

I jumped, a little startled. He was sitting on the rocking chair.

“Hey. Did everything go ok last night? Did they come try to…?”

“No,” Edward interrupted. “Everything is fine.” He smiled a little which I was very happy to see. “Carlisle, Esme and Alice went home right after Charlie left about an hour ago. Emmitt, Rosalie and Jasper are keeping close to Charlie.”

“Why? Did Alice see something else?”

“No, nothing. We just want to take precautions after what happened last night.”

“So, Charlie left? Do you know where he went?”

“He received a phone call early this morning from the station. I don’t really know what it was about. Something about a tip they got on something.”

“Do you think it is them again?”

“I don’t think so. Alice hasn’t seen anything.”

“Yeah, but she didn’t see the murders at the hardware store either Edward.”

“She wasn’t concentrating on them at that time Bella. She is now.”

“I hate that they are here Edward. I mean, if they come after me that is one thing, but why Charlie?”

“I don’t know Bella.” He came over and wrapped his arms around me. “Don’t worry; we are going to figure out a way to stop them I promise you. But until then I am not going to leave you alone which means you have to get dressed. We need to meet Carlisle back at the house.”

“Oh, OK. Just give me a minute to clean up.”

“You look beautiful already.” He kissed me and smiled. It appeared that he was over his self-loathing from last night which was a relief.

When we got to the Cullen’s house there was no one there. Edward said they were probably out hunting and should be back soon.

“Shouldn’t you be out hunting as well?” I was always concerned about Edward torturing himself to protect me. He needed to feed on a regular basis or it made it too hard and painful, well, more hard and painful for him to be around me as drinking my blood was his ultimate temptation.

“I am fine but thank you for thinking of me,” he smiled, grabbed my hand and led me over to the couch.

A few minutes after we sat down, Edward tensed up and a look of confusion came over his face.

“What is it?” I hated that I couldn’t see things like he did. I never knew if he would tell me the truth or try to hold things back in order not to hurt me.

“Charlie is coming,” he said as he stood up.

There was a knock on the door almost instantly.

I was surprised to not only see Charlie standing on the front porch when we opened the door but two of his other officers with police dogs.

“Charlie, what are you doing here?” I’m sure I looked just as confused as Edward did a minute ago.

“What am I doing here, Bella, what are you doing here? Why aren’t you in school?”

I had to think fast. “Um, there were no classes today.” I pushed my hands in my jean pockets, looked down and shrugged, “professor meetings or something.”

“Oh, OK. Um, Edward, I need to talk with Carlisle, may I come in?” Charlie looked stern but apologetic as well.

“Yes of course, please come in. Carlisle is not here at the moment but he should be back any time now.” Edward was calm and polite.

As soon as Charlie got in the house and the door closed, it immediately opened again and Carlisle and Esme entered.

“Hello Charlie,” Carlisle said with a warm smile and calm voice. “For what do we owe this pleasure?”

“I wish I could say I was here for a friendly visit Doc.” Charlie reached in his pocket, grabbed a piece of paper and handed it to Carlisle.

“What is this?” Carlisle looked at the paper.

“It is a warrant to search your property.” Charlie seemed almost embarrassed.

Carlisle was calm, almost like he wasn’t surprised. “Of course, whatever you need to do. Can I ask what you are looking for?”

“We received an anonymous call at the station early this morning and, well, they said they saw…well they said they saw a body in the forest area of your property.”

“What?” I couldn’t help myself. Edward grabbed my hand as if to shut me up. Charlie looked at me apologetically and then looked back at Carlisle. Edward and Esme seemed to have no expressions on their faces. They were just calm.

“Oh my,” Carlisle sounded concerned. “Of course Charlie, do what you need to do.”

“Did you happen to hear or see anything last night, any of you?” Charlie looked around at all of the faces in the room.

Everyone responded “no” with concern.

“Well, can you tell me what you were all doing last night? Where you were?”

I felt my body freeze up. How could they tell him where they all were last night? They couldn’t tell him that they were all busy protecting him from vampires.

Before Carlisle could respond, Alice, Jasper, Rosalie and Emmitt walked down the stairs. They must have climbed through the upstairs window or something. Their timing was impeccable, or planned.

“Hey Charlie!” Alice said smiling, showing no signs of being concerned about anything. She quickly glanced at Edward who nodded his head and then glanced at Carlisle as though giving him some kind of signal.

“Hi Alice”, Charlie replied without looking up at her.

Carlisle spoke next, “Please Charlie, feel free to check whatever you need and let us know what we can do to help. We are obviously as concerned about this as you must be.”

“I am sorry about this Doc. I am sure it is nothing but we need to check it out.” Charlie seemed embarrassed again.

“No need to apologize Charlie. Just let me know if I can help.”

“Alice, is it taken care of?” Carlisle said with concern after Charlie left with his other officers and police dogs to check the Cullen’s property.

“Yes.” She sounded confident.

“Would someone please tell me what is going on?” I hated always being the last to know.

Edward sat me back down on the couch. “Alice saw Charlie coming. She met up with Rosalie, Jasper and Emmitt to check to see if it was true.”

“And was it?”

“It sure was,” Emmitt interrupted punching his fist into his other hand. “And it was them. We smelled their scent.” He looked like he wanted to rip someone’s head off.

“But what about Charlie, what if he finds…”

Emmitt interrupted again, “We took care of it. They won’t find anything.”

Edward glared up at Alice with his teeth clenched, “Alice, how could this have happened? I thought you were watching for them.”

“I was watching for them Edward. You know what I saw last night.”

“Yes, but you were wrong.” Edward’s fists were so tight I thought they would shatter into a thousand cold, icy pieces.

“Edward,” Carlisle snapped. “That is enough. You know what Alice sees isn’t an exact science.”

“It isn’t just a matter of what she sees anymore Carlisle, it is what she isn’t seeing.” Edward was no less angry.

“I don’t understand it Edward,” Alice replied. I mean it couldn’t have been them. I saw them elsewhere. They were nowhere near here. After I saw them at Charlie’s I saw them back in Port Angeles.”

“Oh it was them alright,” Emmitt said and then pointed to his nose. “This never lies.”

“I know, I smelled it too,” Alice sat down like she was about to fall over. “I don’t understand; maybe I am losing my ability or it is on the fritz, I don’t know.” She glared back at Edward and he was still glaring at her. “Maybe he is taking it away from me.”

“Don’t be ludicrous Alice,” Edward snapped. “If I had your gift I would have saw what was happening.”

“That’s enough you two,” Carlisle snapped again. “It doesn’t matter at this point what Alice saw or didn’t see. We have a serious problem we have to deal with. I don’t know what is going on or what they are up to but we cannot wait anymore to take care of this. We need to go after them, tonight. And,” he looked hesitant, “we may want to think about leaving Forks afterwards. Even though the police won’t find anything here, the phone call that Megan and the others obviously made led them right to our door and there are still the other unsolved murders hanging out there. We cannot afford any kind of background investigation. We will have to wait and see how things pan out over the next couple of days.”

No one said anything for a while. Everyone was lost in their own thoughts or Jasper was working his magic calming everyone down. Jasper’s gift was to make everyone feel more at ease in a tense situation.

Emmitt popped up off of his chair, “I say we go get them now. Why wait?”

Jasper chimed in “I agree, the sooner we take care of this the better off we will be.”

“We will wait until tonight,” Carlisle said calmly. “We need to develop a plan. We will obviously have to go to them because they know we know by now what they did. They won’t come here. Alice, do you think you will be able to find them?”

“I think so,” I have never heard her sound so uncertain. I can see them now, they are at Peninsula.”

Edward let out a “yeah” in a very sarcastic tone. Alice ignored him.

“Ok good. Tonight then.” Carlisle sounded determined.

Charlie was back shortly after the discussion and apologized to Carlisle profusely for the whole situation. Of course they didn’t find anything; Emmitt, Rosalie, Jasper and Alice had taken care of that. Charlie explained that he didn’t want to do it but with the latest murders in the area he was obligated to check it out. Carlisle said he understood and with that Charlie was gone.

Edward and I went up to his room and sat on the bed. It seemed like forever had gone by without us directly speaking to each other.

“Edward? Why are they doing this? Is this all because Megan wants you? Are they trying to get rid of me?”

Edward giggled, “I don’t think so Bella.” He laughed again.

“What is so funny? I mean, you have already seen what she is thinking, or whatever it is she does, when she is around you, and even if you didn’t, have you seen yourself Edward?”

He grabbed my hand, smiling, “Bella, not everyone sees me through rose-colored glasses like you.” I couldn’t imagine looking at him through rose-colored glasses. His beauty was too much to bear already.

“I think she was just playing some kind of mind game. She obviously knows by now I am not interested and she certainly knows that putting my family in jeopardy isn’t a way to win me over. No, I think this has more to do with my whole family than with just me, you or Charlie.”

“If it is something to do with your family then why are they going to my house Edward?”

“I don’t know Sweetheart,” his voice was calm and his scent engulfed me. As soon as he spoke the words I could suddenly see a surprised expression on his face, like a light bulb went off.

“Edward, what is it?”

“It was a diversion.”

“A diversion?” I was yet again confused.

“Yes a diversion.” His tone and facial expression reminded me of Sherlock Holmes, figuring out the mystery at the end of the movie. “They said they knew all about Alice’s visions. They know what she sees. They confused her by using their thoughts to make her think they were going after Charlie. They knew we would go over to protect him which would give them the perfect opportunity to come kill on our property.”

It made sense but I will still confused, “But didn’t Alice say that she saw them somewhere else after they were at Charlie’s? How could she see them somewhere else when they were here?” I remembered just a little while ago how confused Alice was by the same question.

“I don’t know. That is the part I still don’t understand. Maybe they were thinking something else so she wouldn’t see them, to throw her off track, I don’t know.”

“Edward,” I was getting anxious again, “how will Alice be able to find them tonight if they can do this to her?”

“What they did last night was deliberate Bella. They had a plan and part of that plan was to confuse Alice. Tonight, they won’t know we are coming. They won’t know they have to throw her off. That is what I am hoping anyway. Right now they are probably thinking we are in trouble with the police, exactly what they wanted.”

“But what if they know that their plan didn’t work, that Charlie didn’t find anything?”

“I don’t think they know. They wouldn’t dare come around here when we are all here and with the police snooping around. That is why we need to act fast. We need to act before they figure it out. I have to go talk to Carlisle. Emmitt and Jasper were right. We cannot wait until tonight.”
