Chapter Five

I flew across the room, again unable to control myself, and hugged him his back still facing me. “No dad. You’re not hearing things. It’s me, Bella.” I let him go slightly and he turned. What I saw in his eyes was a look I was all too familiar with...

I saw his smile broaden. His eyes sparkle. He didn’t forget me, I said to myself. I took a look at the picture Charlie had been looking at before I came in. It was the same one I had seen the day I had left, the one of us together.

“Bella? Is it really you, Hun? I can’t believe it. You’re back. You don’t know how much I have missed you, Kiddo. I’ll do anything you ask me to do. Anything. I just don’t want to lose you again.” Charlie said.

“Yes Charlie, it is me.” Hugging him as tight as I could without hurting him, I continued, “I missed you too, Dad. Will you ever forgive me for leaving you the way I did?”

“Of course Bells. Why wouldn’t I? I love you, Kiddo.” He answered back hugging me tighter. “You’re here to stay, right?” he asked me. What would I tell him? I didn’t want him to hurt him again. I knew we couldn’t stay here for long. All I could do is nod, and hug him tighter.

After all the crying and sobbing, we both started chuckling. We never opened up to each other like this and I wanted to remember this forever. I looked straight in to his eyes, and with one of my hands I brushed away the tears that were now stopping, and smiled at him.

“So dad, what have you been up to? I’ve been meaning to write or call you, but was afraid of your reaction...” I trailed off.

“Nothing much has happened, Bells. It’s all been a routine for me since you left. Billy and his son stop by once in a while to check on me. I go to work, and ask myself what made you run away.”

“You did nothing wrong dad. You are a great father and will always be.” I assured him with a smile.

“It’s true. You don’t know how much I love you for that.” I said, placing my hand into his. I’m sure he felt my icy cold hands.

“You know, kid, your mother comes by once in a while to check on me and to see if I have heard from you.”

“Renee was here?”

“Yes. She was worried and feared the worst.” Great! Yet, another person I have disappointed with my actions. Silence filled the room once again until Charlie said, “What you been doing? During the time you’ve been gone, I mean.” I took a deep breath and began my story.

When we arrive at the house I heard Charlie’s thoughts.

‘Another day and she hasn’t come back. She hasn’t called or bother to send me a letter. For all I know she could be dead.’-- And you don’t know how right you are-- ‘God forbid. I wouldn’t want to lose her. Not like this. Not knowing why she did what she did. Not without telling her how much she means to me. I know that she would come back. She will. I just know it.’ Charlie’s concern for his daughter made me feel terrible.

Bella walked in the house looking worried. I was concern for her. I knew exactly how she was feeling right now. Jasper tried to help by sending some wave of calm to Bella and me. She was taking everything in before she headed upstairs.

Bella turned to look at me and said, “Stay here Edward while I go upstairs to speak to Charlie.”

She pled, and promised to come back downstairs so we can all speak. Giving me a soft tender kiss on the lips before departing, she went up the stairs. I was a little hesitant to let her go. Not because I feared that she wouldn’t be able to control herself. It was just because I knew how hard this was for her and how it might affect her if Charlie didn’t forgive her.

I heard her talk to her father, and ask for his forgiveness. Alice, Jasper and I waited for them in the kitchen. I was getting impatient. I wanted to let her know that I was here for her. When I overheard Charlie’s thoughts, I began to pace.

‘I bet that Cullen kid left her and that is why she is back. What else can you expect from someone like him?’ That was my plan but I was too selfish and cowardly to leave her. I couldn’t live without Bella. She was everything to me. “That Cullen kid left you, didn’t he?” Charlie asked her. ‘Who does he think he is?’ Easy. I’m a monster that took your daughter’s life to fulfill a selfish need to have her by my side forever.

I felt a hand pat me on the back. It was Jasper ‘Edward stop beating yourself up. This isn’t going tochange anything.’ he thought. I hung my head in shame. I knew Charlie was right to think so low of me.

“No! Dad, Edward and I are still together. We are married.” Bella responded. From the tone of her voice, I could tell that she was shocked, maybe hurt, by what he said. “You thought I came back because Edward left me? Sorry to disappoint you dad.”

‘Way to ruin this reunion Charlie. I should have kept that to my self. Wait, she is what?’

“What? No…I mean…What?! You’re married to him?” He sounded astonished. Like he wasn’t expecting something like this to ever happen. Of course he wasn’t, he expected me to get her pregnant, and dump her. What kind of monster did he think I was?

‘Edward you must relax’

“How Jasper? Tell me!” I growled, low enough for only Alice and Jasper to hear. A wave of calm hit me one more time and I felt myself relax. “I’m--”

“I know.” he replied knowing that I was going to apologize.

“Yes dad I am. I love him and he loves me back. Edward would never do something like that to me.” Being here and not facing Charlie was killing me. I was walking towards the staircase when Alice got in my head and told me to wait. I stopped and went back to where I originally was.

“So, why isn’t he here? Is he afraid to face me? I wouldn’t be surprised if he was. After all, he was the one that took you away from all your loved ones.”

“Dad I had a choice. I was eighteen, and I wanted to go with him.”

“But what if things hadn’t worked out with you guys?” ‘It wouldn’t surprise me either’ he added mentally.

“I would have made it through. It was my choice, and I knew what might have happened if I made it.” I should have left her. She would have gotten over me and start a new life…she was only human.

“Edward,” This time it wasn’t Jasper who interrupted my thought. I turned to find Alice standing next to me. “She loves you. Loves you more than anything. When you decided to leave Bella, well, I saw this...” A vision of Bella scrunched up in a ball crying... Laurent at our meadow, looking like he was about to kill her… Bella on a motorcycle…and finally Bella jumping off a cliff. “If you had left her you would have destroyed her. You made the right choice” Alice pointed out.

But why do I still feel like I did something wrong and made her unhappy. “She only missed Charlie. She felt bad that she had to leave like that. Trust me she doesn’t regret anything about what she did. Not you.” Jasper added. A door slammed and I heard hurried footsteps come down the stairs.
