Chapter 1: First sight
I looked at the expanse of water before me. Nothing better than being alone on the beach. It was raining but who cared? I’d be getting wet anyway. I stripped swiftly and threw myself in the water. I laughed out loud. This was great. I would not be able to appreciate the sea water as much as I wanted to as from the following week so I was really happy to have found this desert spot.
I let my tail float me to the surface. To a mermaid there was nothing better than swimming in the sea. I was hungry. I concentrated on finding the perfect prey. I heard the echo of a far away dolphin. Too cute. there was a school of shrimps a little deeper but I needed something more filling. Ah a lost fish, perfect. I swam straight to it. Grabbing it I swam back to the surface and bite off it’s fin. I could not understand how humans could eat cooked fish. I felt sick at that thought. I finished off the fish and tossed its carcass in the water.
Something drew my attention. Had I just heard a laugh? I looked around and realised that I had drifted further than I had anticipated. My gaze wandered towards the beach and I saw a group of people on the beach. What would humans be doing on the beach on such a rainy? And a large group at that!
They were twelve. What was odd (other than the fact that they must have been crazy to be in swimsuits on a rainy beach) was that they seemed to be paired in couples but I was perceiving a very strong bond emanating from them.
Also they were very beautiful people. More beautiful than most humans. Maybe they were mermaids too? I saw a petite brunette push a blond man under the water surface. He laughed as he emerged back on his two legs so I dispelled that idea. Who were they?
They were all different. Only two men were not fair skinned. A small girl, about six, was playing with one of the tanned guys and kept throwing buckets of sand over his body as he was lying down. He laughed and threw a handful of wet sand at her.
“Mummy!” she screamed and ran towards a young girl of about eighteen who was sitting with the other tanned guy. Wow …wait a sec…had she just called that girl with the beautiful long red wavy hair ‘mammy’?
I looked at the others. Two couples were playing beach ball. I blinked hard. Was I having problems with my eyes? Either that or the ball was moving at supernatural speed. I looked at the couple to the right. The man would have been called a beach bum if not for his very pale skin. He was muscular and quite frightening. The woman next to him was slender with beautiful long blond hair. She looked like a model just escaped from a swimming suite magazine in her very skimpy red bikini. Or rather Barbie come alive! The other couple were just as breathtaking but more conservatively dressed in shorts and t shirts. They looked more like teenagers. A boy with reddish brown hair and a brunette. He smiled as he pulled the girl out of the ball’s way before it hit her in the face. The big burly man laughed out loud. The girl frowned prettily before grabbing the ball and throwing it at him. I watched with shocked as the ball exploded on contact with his chest. Maybe it was one of those technologically advanced but fragile equipment. The red headed boy laughed softly as he wrapped his arms around the girl and kissed her. Feeling that I was intruding on a private moment I let my gaze wander to the last couple.
They seemed serene. Where the others were showing varying levels of excitement and joy, the last two were just peaceful looking. They were standing off by themselves at a little distance watching the others. They were just as young as the others but seemed far more mature.
I took in the whole group. They were all fairly young. Maybe they were enjoying time together before going off to university or something.
Unconsciously my eyes went back to the bronzed guy lying in the sand. He was sitting crossed leg and gazing at the sand in front of him. He was obviously the odd man out. All the others were in couples and as cute as the little girl seemed , I did not think she was his girlfriend!
Just then he lifted his eyes and met mine. For a second I couldn’t breathe. He seemed transfixed and during that brief moment I could see hundreds of emotions flicking on his face. I saw him stand up and walk towards the water.
Oh no! I swiftly plunged deeper and swam as fast as I could. When I was at a safe distance I slowed down and oriented myself towards where I had left my clothes. As soon as my tail came in contact with the air it changed back and I walked towards my clothes. My thoughts wandered as I dressed. How come he had seen me? I had been at a fairly safe distance to observe them without being seen. If not for my enhanced senses I would not have seen or heard them at all. Who were they and what were they doing at Coos Bay Oregon, the last place on earth for tourists?!
