Two days until the Reaping. This was the worst time of year. Everybody was tense and worried- will I be chosen? And once someone was, there was a flood of sadness, knowing a friend or family member was about to die.

It hurt, the emotions pounding in my head. The guilt was the worst though, knowing one little slip, one mistake, had caused these awful Games. Had caused the deaths of so many innocent Tributes. Only four from our district had ever survived. I lay on the couch wallowing in misery- partially that of others, partially mine. “Alice!” I called, clutching the arm of the couch.

She danced into the room, her beautiful face glowing. She was the girl nobody could help but love. Her bright cheeriness instantly lifted my mood.

“Oh no,” she murmured. “Not that time again.” And she dashed out.

“No, wait! Don’t…” The pounding headache resumed and I fell off the couch.

“Jasper!” Alice was back, with Bella and Emmett in tow. She helped me up and told the other two “He needs his annual ‘Happy Pill’”.

“No problemo.” Emmett said. He dragged out an ancient set of controllers.

Bella groaned. “Why can’t we just throw a nice little party like last year?”

“Because it’s my turn to choose. Now, get your groooooooooooooooove on…” He shouted strapping on a pair of gloves and shoes. The old XboxAction booted itself up.

“You suck.” Bella fake-pouted.

Emmett tugged on his goggles and flicked his fingers. “I think it’s time for a little good old-fashioned DDR, eh?”

The two danced around following invisible commands. The problem with the XboxAction was that the virtual reality the goggles projected blocked out everything else. You couldn’t see the person beside you. It was eventually pulled from the market. People threw theirs out, but we kept ours. I rested my head in Alice’s lap and watched Emmett and Bella bang into each other. We all laughed, and their laughter made me even happier.

“What’s going on?” Renesmee hobbled into the room. Her mother and uncle, continued on, oblivious, but Alice and I both cringed. She knew how much Nessie hurt me.

Her once beautiful face was blackened and burned on one side, and her left leg was missing from the knee down. I could feel the pain in each step, Renesmee’s struggle to keep smiling for everyone else. A victim of the war, the war I caused. All it had taken was one little bite, one little sip. I moaned. But oh, who could resist la tua cantante.

Alice wrapped her arms around my neck. “Shhh… It’s alright.” She whispered nuzzling her chin against my ear.

“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry!” Renesmee exclaimed. Her eyes watered. “I didn’t know! I heard laughter and I…”

“No, no, it’s not your fault.” I said softly. It’s mine, I thought. “All of District 12 has the blahs.”

“Poor Uncle Jasper.” She frowned and hugged me. “Oh!” she perked up. She grabbed her crutches and tottered away as fast as she could. “Auntie Rosie!”

Rosalie came and dropped a dead fawn at my feet. “Miserable, lazy creep.” She sneered. She hated me for what happened to Renesmee. But you couldn’t blame her. Sometimes I hated myself too.

I picked up the limp body and drank greedily. I never did my own hunting anymore. Not after the last time, we couldn’t risk another incident. I couldn’t control myself when I was feeding. With the frenzy of bloodlust, no one was safe.

The rest of the week carried on in the same fashion. The closer we got to the Reaping, the worse the headaches became. Alice, Bella and Emmett were constantly by my side, and Carlisle and Esme worked to keep Rosalie and Nessie as far away from me as possible. Edward would come home everyday with a deer or two, and whatever else he could find.

On the day of the Reaping, Bella asked me “Where are you going?”

I shrugged on my coat. “I want to watch.” I said simply.

“Are you out of your mind?” Alice gaped. “Do you have any idea how miserable the people are going to be out there?”

“I don’t care.”

“We can make it an outing.” Carlisle jumped in. “When was the last time this family did something together?”

Later, we were huddled at the back of the crowd.

“It is a time for repentance and a time for thanks. Please welcome our previous winning tributes!” the mayor announced with a fake smile.

Katniss Everdeen slinked onto the stage. She looked like a cat, tensed up and ready to spring at any moment. She was followed by Peeta Mellark, who grasped Katniss’s hand as if afraid to let go. Finally, Haymitch Abernathy stumbled after them. He hasn’t been sober for at least twenty years. It’s surprising he actually won.

Effie Trinkett picked at her nails, clearly bored. She had been stuck in District 12 fourteen years without the promotion she had hoped for. “Happy Hunger Games. May the odds be ever in your favor.” She addressed the crowd in a dull monotone. It’s sad, how far she has fallen from her old enthusiastic self. “Our first tribute is Cressant Wyle.”

A teenage girl sullenly walks onstage. The crowd is silent as she slumps into her chair.

“Congratulations Cressant!” Effie drones on. “Our male tribute is… Sterling Toll.”

Seeing the little boy, bone thin and trembling, make his way towards the podium, made me decide.

In those thirty seconds three things happened.

Alice collapsed into a vision and was caught by Carlisle.

Edward swiped at me and yelled “Jasper, no!”

I stood up and said in a loud clear voice “I volunteer for the Hunger Games.”
