I ate lunch on my own. I couldn’t be bothered with Mike’s lust or Angela’s chatter. I didn’t know why I felt so upset the he didn’t like me. He wasn’t important. I glanced over to where he was sitting with his family. It looked like his sister Alice was yelling at him. I wondered why.

I finished the day and went home. Not to my surprise, neither Renee nor Charlie was home. So I cooked myself some tea and started reading. Renee came home and I went to bed, same as every night. But there was an underlying tension. I didn’t go to sleep, but read with my torch. It was midnight by the time Charlie came home.

“Where have you been for the last five hours? I had to look after Bella on my own!”

“Oh don’t start that Renee! So it’s okay for you to stay out till midnight but I’m not allowed to do my job! I’m head of the police; I have to do my job to keep people safe! Get over it!” I hugged my legs as they shouted at each other.

“I don’t get why we’re still stuck in this damn town! It’s stupid and crowded and there’s no sun!”

“I thought we’d decided to keep Bella in the best place for her to settle. She’s got friends here, so have I and you do to!”

“What? Mrs Newton? That gossip? She’s not a friend, she’s a lying backstabber!” I covered my ears and felt the tears streaming down my face.

“I’m going to bed. I’ve been working hard all day, looking after our daughter and that last thing I need is you accusing me of stuff”

“I’m accusing you of stuff? That’s a new one! I’ve been working hard to get food for our table to look after our daughter as well!” I heard heavy footsteps on the stairs and I switched off my torch. I hated it when they used me as a defence in their arguments. I got up and padded over to the door. I could hear the sports channel blaring downstairs. I strained my ears and heard the faint noises of Renee crying. I snuck down the hallway and peeked through the gap in the door. Renee wiped her eyes and rolled over. I crept downstairs and saw Charlie lying on the sofa. I wished they would stop arguing. I went back to bed.

I drove to school. Charlie had already left for work when I got up and Renee acted like nothing had happened. She looked happy but it was like a mask with the occasional crack appearing. I was happy to escape to the pouring rain of the outside. I reached the school. The Volvo was there with Alice and the others. But no Edward. I didn’t move from the cabin of my truck. I rested my head against the cool window, and felt the warm tears slide down my face. My vision blurred as I stared at the four exceptionally beautiful people in front of me. I just wanted life to be the way it was. Why couldn’t it be normal?
