5. Chapter 5 Her Story
Rating 5/5 Word Count 1401 Review this Chapter
The whole family was sitting in the living room of our new house. Everyone, including me, had shared our story with Lissy. Now it was her turn.
“Um…” she seemed reluctant to share.
“Why don’t you start with the night you left.” I suggested.
“Okay.” She sighed. “Well, after you told everyone you were… leaving I did the only thing that came to mind. I packed. Once you were asleep I snuck into your room and left my letter for you on your desk.” She looked up at me. “You got it. Right?”
I didn’t answer her. I just pulled out the 157 year old letter from my pocket and gave it to her. She just stared at it. If she could cry she probably would have been. I could still remember exactly what she had written.
27 April 1861
Jasper, I’m sorry for doing this, but I’m not going to, can’t, stay here knowing that you’re risking your life for nothing. I know you think you’re doing this for what’s right, but it isn’t. Don’t come after me. I promise I’ll try to be safe. Please tell everyone that I love them. Be careful out there Jasper. Maybe you’ll even be Major Whitlock someday. Be safe.
All my love, Lllian Elisabeth Whitlock
You could still see where her tears had smeared the ink. I looked over and saw that she was still staring numbly at the page. I quickly checked her emotions. Sadness. But there was a little hint of happiness and relief thrown in there. I was curious to know what she was thinking, so I resorted to Edward. What is she thinking about? I lifted my head and saw him mouth You. I involuntarily tightened my hold on her hand.
Out of nowhere she continued her story. “I then went out to the barn and grabbed a horse, and I just started riding. I had no idea where I was going. The only thing I knew was that I wanted to go north. I rode until I was too tired. That first night I cried myself to sleep. Only God knows where I was. I kept up that same cycle until one night when I was camping out on the shores of a lake just past Dallas something in the forest woke me up. That’s when…” she trailed off when her voice started cracking.
No one said anything. They just stared at her with pity etched onto their faces. After a few minutes of silence she spoke again. “I grabbed the shotgun and…” she trailed off once she saw the look on my face. “About that…” she sighed. “I’m sorry I took it, but it was kind of a necessity at the time.” I let it go. “So I grabbed the shotgun, and then they walked out of the forest. There were three of them; a black haired male, a blonde female, and a brown haired female. They all looked to be around age twenty, and they were beautiful.” She shuddered at the memory. “I can’t…” she broke off.
“Just skip that part.” I suggested.
She nodded. “I woke up in the same place I had camped. They told me what I was, and I believed them. Their names were Jonathon, Katherine, and Julia. They didn’t mean to change me. Katherine just wanted to feed because I would be no good in a fight, but Jonathon thought otherwise. He was right. I was the only original newborn that survived, and I was only one under age 19. Plus, all the other newborns were male. In the beginning there were about 14 of us. We won are first three battles and lost the next two. We only lost about half of our numbers when we won. When we lost only about two others and I survived. We stopped fighting for a few days while Jonathon, Katherine, and Julia made more of us. Eventually our numbers reached twenty-eight. It was probably the largest army in history. With so many of us in one area things were bound to get out of hand. At least ten people a night would go missing from Dallas. It got worse. In 1872 the Volturi finally stepped in. Jonathon and Julia made it out, but Katherine and the rest of the newborns, besides me, were destroyed. Aro offered me a place in the Guard, and I accepted. I would have been glad to die by then, after everything that had happened, but it didn’t seem like my time to go. I would have been 24 years old that year. I would have been married and had a family. All of that was taken away from me. The Volturi were the closest thing to a family.” she sighed at the last part. “I made friends with Jane and Alec, who were both around the same age as me."
She was about to continue but was interrupted by Edward. “I can see why there was more than one reason you hated it there.” He said that with an amused expression on his face.
All of the sudden a mix of annoyance, anger, and embarrassment flowed off of Lissy.
“What?” Carlisle asked.
We all could see that Edward was trying very hard to conceal his laughter. After he calmed down a bit, with help from me, he revealed what was so funny. “Aro, Marcus, and Caius wanted her to be with Alec.”
Edward couldn’t contain his laughter any longer and Emmett joined in. Carlisle, Esme, Rosalie, Bella, Alice, and I had looks of disgust on our faces. After about five minutes Edward and Emmett calmed down.
“That must have been a long 136 years.” Emmett teased. “Or did you enjoy it?”
I felt her emotions turn from embarrassment to anger. The next thing I knew she was slowly disappearing with a sly smile on her face and with one little wave to Emmett and Edward she disappeared completely. They were going to get it.
“Edward.” Emmett timidly asked. “What is she thinking?”
“She’s blocking her mind.” Edward asked as equally nervous.
“How so?” I asked grinning.
“She’s singing Love Story in her head. Oh no.” he broke off.
“What?” Emmett practically yelled.
“She just changed to Gives You Hell.” he said all humor gone from his face.
“You’re in for hell, alright.” I snickered.
“You are exactly right Jasper.” A voice called from behind Edward and Emmett.
Before they could react they were being lifted in the air by their ears and thrown out the open window. In their place stood Lissy with a grin on her face.
“Where were we?” she said as she took her place next to me like nothing had ever happened.
“The Volturi.” grinned Carlisle.
“Right.” She said just as Emmett and Edward stumbled back into their seats glaring at her.
“Aro found me very valuable because I could sneak up on the enemy so easily.” she said while grinning at Edward and Emmett.
“Have you always been ‘vegetarian’?” cut in Rose.
She looked down guiltily. “No. But it has always bothered me after I fed, but I didn’t know any alternative. The first time I was supposed to feed in Italy I finally snapped. Seeing all of those people being herded in there like sheep was heart breaking. I just couldn’t get myself to do it. I started to run away, but Aro set Jane on me.” everyone flinched. “Aro asked me what was wrong, and I told him I just couldn’t do it. He then told me about someone who lived with them for awhile.” everyone looked at Carlisle. “He told me that the man survived on the blood of animals. After the rest fed he sent Felix to take me hunting in the forest outside the city. I assisted them with their duties up until ten years ago. They were afraid of a certain family becoming too powerful. They were afraid of losing their power. They were going to destroy that family whether or not they did anything wrong. They were just waiting for an excuse to go. When one came they didn’t even wait to check if it was a misunderstanding or not. They just went. I had to go. Otherwise I was in for it.”
“You weren’t there, though.” Rosalie cut in.
Lissy stared at Rose, confused.
“That was our family, Lissy.” Carlisle said softly.
