Alice's POV

Where am I?
How did I get here?
Why do I want to cry?
Why aren’t you near?
Where are you?
You should be here.
Is it your choice not to?
Tell me why, my dear.
Why did you leave me?
What did I do?
What went wrong, baby?
I love you.
I’ll find you, dearest keeper of my heart.
I know that you were lying.
We can’t be apart.
I will never stop trying.
Only death could keep me away.
I’ll start looking in the northernmost state.
I’ll pack and leave today.
Hopefully, Alice will see the decisions I’ve made of late.
Off I go.
We shall see each other soon.
Your love is all I know.
It will bring an end to this new moon!

When I snapped out of the vision, there was a piece of paper in front of me with Bella’s poem written on it in my handwriting. Jasper put his arms around my waist from behind and said, “What is that, darling?” I sighed.

“I had a vision of Bella writing this poem and then packing a suitcase.” I held the paper out for him to read.

“Should we tell Edward? She’s putting herself in a lot of danger by doing this. An eighteen year old girl traveling alone has more to fear than just vampires.” he looked worried. I thought about what to do, and then a smile spread across my face. I searched the future. Edward wouldn’t be back from his hunting trip until tomorrow.

“Let’s save her some trouble then,” I said with a grin. He immediately caught on to my intentions. “Edward is going to be so pissed. Let’s go!” he took my hand and we walked to the garage. Esme was lecturing Emmett for what he had said to Edward earlier.

“Hey, Emmett, do you want to help us do something that will royally piss him off?” Jasper asked. Emmett’s face lit up like a little kid on Christmas morning. “Hell yes, I’m in,” he said.

Esme looked at us warily. “What are you doing?” she asked. I handed her Bella’s poem. “Just helping a friend!” I winked. She smiled and ran inside the garage.

“We’ll have to take Edward’s car. She’ll recognize is immediately. Hopefully, she won’t mind seeing it again.” Esme climbed in the back with Emmett. I was surprised that she was coming along. I hit the gas. We needed to get back to the place we never should have left. I timed our arrival for the exact moment that Bella walked out the door with her suitcase. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw the car. I ran to her and, holding my copy of her poem out to her, said, “I thought you might like some help.”

She stared at me for a second then dropped the suitcase and flung her arms around me. “Alice!” After she let go, I up her suitcase, and put it in the trunk. The others had gotten out of the car. Esme and Jasper both hugged her, but Emmett picked Bella up and spun her in circles. She laughed, and I could tell by the sound of it that she hadn’t laughed even once since we left. My family and I would have to do something about that.

“Emmett, we came and got Bella so she wouldn’t die trying to find us. I’d appreciate it if you didn’t shake her to death. Goodness knows I would be the least of your problems if that happened.”

He rolled his eyes as her sat Bella down. She shook her head.

“I’ve survived worse. I’m assuming that you all came without permission. What is he going to do with you when he finds out?”

I looked into the future.

Edward is running toward the house early in the morning. He stops dead. Carlisle is close behind followed by Rosalie.

“I smell a human,” says Rosalie. Edward inhales deeper and then falls to the ground. Carlisle concentrates on the human scent. Dry sobs are racking Edward’s body. Suddenly Carlisle recognizes the scent.

“Rose, go on ahead, but be nice. Tell the others we’ll be there soon. Explain if they ask, but don’t let Bella hear you. Please Rosalie, this is important.”

Rosalie looks at Edward. He’s whispering, over and over, “Bella, I’m sorry. I love you.” her expression softens. “Don’t take too long. Every extra second is like another hour in Hell for both of them, I’m sure.” she runs toward the house.

Carlisle sits on the ground next to Edward.

“Did you know anything about this?” Edward asks. Carlisle shakes his head. “They must have left after we did. If Alice were going to bring Bella to you for no specific reason, she would have done it by now. She must have had a reason. Let’s go home. We both have our own beautiful woman waiting for us.”

Carlisle stands and pulls Edward off of the forest floor.

I stopped myself from seeing the ending. I wanted to experience it firsthand.

“Hell is going to freeze over for the most part, but I didn’t want to look at the end so none of us know,” I said. Emmett’s smile clouded over with confusion. “Why is Hell freezing over?” I laughed.
“Rosalie is going to be nice to Bella of her own free will.” They all laughed. We all got into the car, and I hit the gas. We hit 100 mph by the time I reached the end of the street.

“You were right, by the way. The line in your poem that said, ‘I know that you were lying,’ is completely true. Edward is a master of prevarication. Go easy on him for a day or two, though. The guy radiates depression like the sun radiates heat,” Jasper said as we pulled into the garage. A vision hit me as soon as I took the key out of the ignition. They were coming home early.

“They decided to come home early. We have half an hour. Rosalie wanted to see Emmett, and Edward wants to sit at the piano playing Bella’s lullaby. You know, Rosalie actually broke the first one we had at this house because he played it over and over for a week straight. Carlisle made her buy him a new one. I understood, but after 168 hours of the same thing it’s gets old.” I smiled, but my good humor wasn’t long lived.

“Yeah, only one thing stays interesting that long!” Emmett said with a wink. Bella looked at him incredulously. “I could’ve gone without hearing that,” she said reproachfully.

“Just wait until you become a vampire. You and Edward will be just as bad as me and Rose were. Oh, and, I promise you right now that, if you want to, you will become a vampire even if I have to bite you myself while the others hold Edward back. He’s being an idiot, and I’m tired of it,” Emmett replied. We sat down in the living room and talked. It wasn’t long before Rosalie came through the door.

“Hey, Bella! The Carlisle and Edward will be here soon. We caught your scent a few miles away from here. What all happened after we left?” Rosalie directed the last part at me. I told her about my vision and getting Bella from Forks. Carlisle walked through the door just as I finished.

“Edward wants to talk to you alone, Bella,” he said as he hugged her. I signaled Jasper to help Bella, and he sent a wave of calm and bravery to her.

Bella’s POV

I felt like I was walking towards an executioner, and in a way it was true. Edward decided the fate of my mental and emotional health. I couldn’t live without him. His words had shattered my heart and only he could reverse the damage. I looked around the yard and located the beat of my heart and the breath in my lungs. He was standing on the edge of the woods looking at me with an unreadable expression. I walked until I was standing right in front of him. We looked into each other’s eyes. For those few seconds there was nothing more than him and me then he stepped forward, pulled me into his arms, and held me close. Tears streamed from my eyes. He whispered over and over, “I love you, Bella. I’m so sorry.” he pressed his lips against my hair and kept whispering the same words in my ear. I tightened my hold around him and lightly kissed the base of his throat. He picked me up and we ran deeper into the woods. I didn’t know what was going on, but I was going to get answers whether he wanted to give them or not. I pulled the poem out of my pocket and handed it to him after he sat me down.

“I want answers, Edward,” I said pleadingly. He looked at me and sighed heavily.

“I didn’t want to leave, but I had hoped you would live a normal, happy human life. I don’t want to take your soul and damn you to an eternity of night. I don’t want to take your life away. You she be able to get married to someone that you can have children with.”

I cut him off there. “Do I really look like the type of person who wants to have kids? Edward, I can’t live without you. You are necessary to my existence. The entire world could become one big desert and the sky could fall, but if I had you it wouldn’t matter. You wouldn’t be ‘damning’ me to anything. You’re only keeping me from the life I want by refusing. I love you. I want to spend eternity with you! There’s nothing I could ever want more than I want you. Besides, I could probably get used to all of the sleepless nights. According to Emmett, there’s only one thing that doesn’t get boring after 168 straight hours.”

He looked at my innocent blush and burst out laughing. I joined in as he pulled me back into his arms. “I wouldn’t know,” he said, and it occurred to me that I had never once wondered whether or not he was a virgin. He just never seemed like the type to sleep around. He looked at my facial expression and a scowl passed over his features. “The answer is no, Bella.”
I feel the confusion on my face. “Sorry, it was just a errant realization. You’re around a century old yet I never once thought about the possibility that you had slept with some other woman.”

Shock crossed his face. “That’s what you were thinking.” I nodded. “What did you think I was thinking?” Embarrassment settled onto his perfect face. “I thought you were making a suggestion for the near future. I’ve got to spend less time around Emmett. Hearing his mind is going to corrupt my proper upbringing someday. Don’t be getting any ideas, though. I’m not going to risk hurting you. I’ve done enough. By the way, the answer to what you were actually thinking is also no.” If vampires could blush, Edward would have been as red as I already was. I decided to change the subject. “So, are you going to stop being stubborn, or do I need to keep being stubborn? It would be easier for both of us if you just told Carlisle he could bite me, or you could change me yourself, if you can handle it!”

He stared into the forest around us before looking at me in defeat. “You win, love. I told myself when I caught your scent earlier that I would never hurt you again, but I never listen. Are you sure this is what you want? It will be extremely painful.” I nodded unable to speak. He gave in. I actually won. I could have the love of my existence forever. I smiled and looked into his eyes. He looked back for a few seconds before pressing his lips against mine softly. We kissed for an immeasurable length of time. I lost track of everything. Just like being in his arms again for the first time in months, we were the only ones there. When we finally broke apart, he asked, “When do you want to make the change?” I thought about it. I didn’t know whether now was an option, but I was going to try anyway. “Within the next five minutes if possible, but no later than a week, please.” he considered that.

“What did you tell Charlie before you left?”

“Charlie died of a stroke in mid-October. We’ll have to fake my death, won’t we?” A few tears escaped my strict control. Edward nodded. His countenance was sympathetic, but I could see something brewing beneath it. Guilt, maybe? Regret? “We could go back today. Who do you think would have the most fun blowing up my truck.” a grin spread quickly across his face. “Emmett and I can take care of that. We’ll drive it off a cliff. Do you want to go and tell the others, or stay here a little bit longer?” he asked. I thought about it. “How about you kiss me again, and then we’ll go share the plan?”

“Your wish is my command, love.” he kissed me again. Five minutes later, we walked through the front door.

Edward’s POV

Everyone else was in the living room. I looked at Carlisle first.

What did you decide?

“Bella won,” I said simply. Six faces immediately smiled wider than before. I turned to Emmett next. “How would you feel about helping me destroy an old piece of junk?” I asked. Bella glared at me. “There is nothing wrong with my truck. It’s just a bit out dated. If it weren’t the easiest way for me to ‘die’, I’d never allow it. Just make it convincing and spare me the details.” she was trying to be mad, but it wasn’t working.

Finally a house full of happy people.

Alice suddenly went still.

Emmett and Jasper were holding my arms as I leaned over Bella. She was looking into my eyes with determination. Alice was sitting in the corner of the room closely monitoring the future.

“Are you ready, love?” I ask. She nods. I look at Carlisle. He points out where to bite.

“Make sure you have a good grip, guys.” I tell Emmett and Jasper. They tighten their hold. I lean closer and bite. Everything is absolutely silent, and then Bella screams. I bite the rest of the major vein points, and seal them over with venom. I can’t even taste her blood as I concentrate solely on keeping her forever. After a minute Alice looks up.

“You can let him go now, boys. Leave the two of them alone,” she says authoritatively. Carlisle quickly checks Bella before ushering everyone else out of the room.

Alice and I withdrew from the vision at the same time. I was stuck in between a grimace and a smile. Getting to keep my dearest Bella forever, or not, I didn’t like seeing her in so much pain.

“Well, that’s not the worst vision you’ve ever had,” I said sarcastically.

When she didn’t comment, I realized that Alice was singing in her mind.

Time is going by so much faster than I, and I’m starting to regret not spending all of it with you. Now I’m wondering why I’ve kept this bottled inside, so I’m starting to regret not telling all of it to you. So if I haven’t yet, I’ve got to let you know.

You’re never gonna be alone from this moment on. If you ever feel like letting go, I won’t let you fall. You’re never gonna be alone. I’ll hold you til the hurt is gone.

And now, as long as I can, I’m holding on with both hands because, forever, I believe that there’s nothing I could need but you. So if I haven’t yet, I’ve got to let you know.

You’re never gonna be alone from this moment on. If you ever feel like letting go, I won’t let you fall. When all hope is gone, I know that you can carry on. We’re gonna take the world on. I’ll hold you til the hurt is gone.

You’ve got to live every single day like it’s the only, but if tomorrow never comes. Don’t let it slip away. Could be our only one. You know it’s only just begun. Every single day may be our only one, but if tomorrow never comes- tomorrow never comes. Time is going by so much faster than I, and I’m starting to regret not telling all of this to you.

You’re never gonna be alone from this moment on. If you ever feel like letting go, I won’t let you fall. When all hope is gone, I know that you can carry on. We’re gonna take the world on. I’ll hold you til the hurt is gone.

I’m going to be there always. I won’t be missing one more day. I’m going to be there always. I won’t be missing one more day.

“What are you trying to hide from me, Alice?” I asked warily. She rolled her eyes.

“I’m not hiding anything, Edward. Never Gonna be Alone by Nickelback happens to be a very good song. Did you not notice yourself singing it to Bella in the vision?” she was looking at me like I was an idiot. I shook my head. “I was a bit preoccupied by the screaming. It’s not something I enjoyed hearing.” I shuddered.

Did Alice have a vision about Bella’s transformation?

I nodded.

Tell us.

I explained the vision. Bella just watched my face as I spoke.

“I can handle the pain. That’s my issue. Don’t worry about it.” I just looked at her incredulously. How could I not worry? She read my expression and guilt spread across her features.

“I’m sorry to do this to you, but three days of feeling like someone set my insides on fire will be nothing compared the emptiness I’ve endured for the last three months, especially after losing Charlie. I’ll be fine, Edward.”

Her statement hit exactly where she had aimed it. I tightened my arms around her, whispering, “never again.”

“You owe me a car of my choice, bro,” Emmett said boastfully. “What for?” I asked, confused.

“The bet we made back in 1971; you bet me a car that neither of us would come across a situation where selfishness was truly justified, and that the entire family had to do a majority vote to decide if such a situation arose. Well, I happen to see a blushing little human girl in your arms, and you’ve said yourself that it would be selfish to make her a vampire so I call a vote. Does this count as a loss on Edward’s part: yea or nay? Alice and Jasper?”

“You lose, Edward,” they said simultaneously.

“Rose?” he asked. She nodded, thinking about fixing the car up when it need some maintenance.

“Carlisle and Esme?”

“Sorry, son,” Carlisle said to me. Esme smiled apologetically.

“He has a point, Edward.”

Emmett turned to Bella who grinned wickedly.

“Is it selfish to comply with the wishes of the woman you love?” she replied. I grinned, too.

“Bella does have a point. Technically I’m not being selfish because it’s what she wants, too, but in the general sense of the bet I did lose. Shall we call it a compromise? You get the car, but I get to test drive it first. Deal?” I looked at him. The internal battle was hilarious, but it was interrupted by Alice having another vision.

One second I can hear every thought in the house except Bella’s and then they all vanish.

“Alice, what are you thinking about?” I ask. Her forehead wrinkles with confusion. “I was deciding how much car-space I was going to need for my shopping trip. Bella’s wardrobe is in dire need of an update. Surely you would have heard that.”

I shake my head. The thoughts suddenly come back.

“That felt weird,” Bella says. “It was like part of my mind was stretching out to the others.”

Alice laughs as she looks at Bella.

“This is perfect. Edward has the ability to invade our minds and Bella has the ability to protect them. It gives the saying ‘opposites attract’ a whole new meaning!”

Alice burst out laughing as her eyes refocused. I rolled my eyes at her then looked down at Bella.

“What on earth am I going to do with you, love?” I asked rhetorically. She answered anyway.

“Love me forever, and remind me everyday?” she said, throwing me an innocent look that was irresistible.

I nodded. “I was asking rhetorically, but you know I will. Alice had a vision about your extra talent as a vampire. You’ll be able to hide more than just your own mind from me.”

Emmett laughed. “Hey, if he ever makes you mad, you could punish him by hiding certain peoples’ thoughts all day. Don’t block me and Rose, though. You’d just be helping him. He hates hearing our thoughts.”

“I’ll think about it,” she said mischievously, “but Edward won’t make me that mad. Will you, sweetheart?” I got a slightly venomous look from my little angel that nearly made me laugh.

“I’d rather be ripped and burnt than give you a reason to be angry with me, my love!” I said sincerely, looking straight into her beautiful, chocolate-brown eyes. She stared back into mine, and despite all that I’d done, I saw that everything was going to be alright!
