Thankful 11

I pulled her tighter against me and felt her arms around my waist, where they usually went when I held her. I missed moments like this. But most of all, I just missed...her.

"I love you, Bella. I always have," I said.

"I know. I love you too."

This would be our turning point; the one place I didn't think I'd ever be in again and would fight like hell to stay in.

Edward and I made our way back into the Benefit, but not before I went to the restroom to fix my face. My eyes were red and swollen; my cheeks were blotchy and had mascara lines. I was a mess- both physically and mentally. I was not expecting any of this. I had said the words I had forced myself not to say, and in doing so, released a weight from my shoulders. But I wasn't sure where that left us. Yes, I told him I loved him, but I still hadn't forgiven him. I just hoped he realized that.

Once my makeup was fixed, I rejoined Edward and our family at the banquet. Rosalie and Alice kept giving me a questioning eye. They could tell something happened between the two of us and talked with some mutual friends of ours. I could feel Edwards eyes on me - not the intense eyes that questioned my every move, but the eyes that were full of love for me. Those eyes I didn't mind having on me.

Rose and Emmett were the first of us to leave, as she was tired and her feet and back hurt. Taking their cue, I called my cab to bring me back to Charlie and Rebecca's.

"I can drive you, Bella," Edward said.

"You came with Esme and Carlisle. I'm fine with taking a cab."

"At least let me wait with you."

Edward got his jacket from Coat Check and waited with me outside.

"So if you're going back to Charlie's, where exactly are you sleeping?"

"Probably on the floor. Pretty sure Maddy, Masen and Charlotte are in the only bed they have. It's okay though."

"Why don't you just come back to the house with me? You can sleep in the guest room and in the morning you can go to Charlie's."

"Because I don't have anything to wear and I'm not sleeping in this."

"You can sleep in one of my shirts. You sleeping on the floor is crazy Bella. It's just one night."

I knew he wasn't going to take no for an answer, but I wasn't backing down on this.

"No. I'm going back to Charlie and Rebecca's, and then in the morning, we're heading back to the house."

"Can I at least drive you? I would feel more comfortable."

"Hurry up then, I'm tired."

The valet quickly pulled the Mercedes around. We didn't say much on the way back to Charlie's - maybe because I could barely keep my eyes open. Before I knew it, I felt Edward's hand brush my cheek.

"Bella, we're at Charlie's."

"What? Oh, thanks."

“Do you want me to walk you to the door?"

"No, I'm fine, thank you. I'll call you before we leave."

"Are you busy next weekend," he asked."Um..I don't think so, why?"

"I have it off and I thought we could do something as a family."

"We'd like that. Jack especially."

"Yeah, he found one of your scrub shirts and wears it all over the house. It's kinda cute."

"How does he manage to get around in it?"

"He doesn't," i said chuckling. "He takes one step and falls over. Charlotte keeps trying to take it away from him, but he always seems to find it.

"Well, maybe he'll be he third one of us to go to med school."

"Which would make you happy, I'm sure."

“Of course. The world needs more Cullen doctors," he said with a soft laugh.

“Alright, I'm going in. I have a long drive in the morning."

Edward leaned over and kissed me on the cheek, then waited until I was inside before he left. Once inside, I checked on everyone. Maddy, Masen and Charlotte were in the spare bedroom; Jack and Lilly were in the nursery. I quickly changed out of my dress and went to lay down on the couch, although sleep was not coming. My body was physically tired, but my mind was racing with the memory of what happened tonight.

"...I'm just going downstairs, I'll be right back," I heard Charlie say.

Charlie heavily walked down the stairs and into the kitchen. He was breathing heavily.

“Dad, are you alright?"

"..fine..just don't feeling well. Go back to sleep."

A few seconds later I heard a glass break and a loud thump. I got up and went to the kitchen, to find Charlie slumped over.

"Dad?...DAD!""Bella," he wheezed.

"What's wrong," I asked with panic in my voice.

"I can't.."

"Rebecca!" I yelled as I grabbed the phone.

I quickly dialed 911. The operator said she'd send an ambulance right away. Charlie was starting to drift in and out of consciousness.

"It's okay Charlie, the ambulance will be here soon," Rebecca said.

"I..I love you," he said to Rebecca.

"I love you. Please, just hold on."

Once the ambulance arrived, I called Edward. I didn't know who else to call. Thankfully, the kids slept through the whole ordeal. While I waited, I changed, checked on the kids a few times and then started cleaning the kitchen. I didn't even hear Edward come in the house.

"Bella, are you alright," he asked from behind me.

I couldn't answer him. Instead I turned and wrapped his arms around him and sobbed into his chest.

"I'm sorry.. I didn't know what else to do."

"It's okay. Why don't you go and be with Rebecca. I can stay here."

“Masen isn't going to like it."

"He'll be fine. Go."

Morning came quickly and it wasn't long before the house was filled with voices. I had missed this sound and I realized it was something I had taken for granted before. I started gathering the various items to make waffles when Maddy and Masen walked in the kitchen.

"Dad? Where's mom," Masen asked.

"She and Rebecca are at the hospital."

"Why," Maddy asked.

"Because Grandpa got sick last night."

"Is he okay," Maddy asked.

"I don't know. I haven't heard from either of them."

"So, why are you here? Why couldn't grandma or grandpa come," Masen asked.

"Because I am still your father and your mother wanted me here."

"So what, you're going to play dad whenever you feel like it?"

"Then when are you going..." Masen said

"Going to what?"

"Going to admit you were wrong? Tumor or not, you hurt Mom."

"Masen!" Maddy said.

"What? I have every right to say it!"

"Of course you do. It's okay to say what you're thinking."

"See Maddy!"

"Has mom forgiven you yet," Maddy asked.

"Not just yet, but I think she's close. Why?"

"I miss you, that's all."

"How could you? After everything he did to Mom!"

“It wasn't his fault, Masen! Why can't you understand that?"

"Because it's too easy, that's why!" With that, Masen stormed out of the kitchen.

"Sorry, Dad," Maddy said.

"Don't be."

"Do you want some help?"

"Sure, kid."

"He's going to be alright, isn't he, Bella?" Rebecca asked me.

"Sure he is," I lied.

An hour ago, Charlie went into surgery to remove the blockages in his heart. The truth was, I didn't know if he would be alright.

"You never said how the benefit was."

"It was okay."

“Did you and Edward get a chance to talk at all?"

"A little bit."

"Did you make any progress?"

"Some. But now's not the time to talk about it."

“I know. I just need a distraction. Tell me."

"Well, we said we still love each other."

“But I'm worried that if he comes home what it will do to Masen. He's still struggling with all of this."

"Bella, Edward is your husband. He deserves to be at home now. Whether or not Masen is happy at first doesn't matter. He'll get over it. He needs him there."

She was right. Masen may hate the idea, but maybe going back to the family we once were is what everyone needed. Sure, it wasn't going to be entirely the same, but I saw how his absence affected all of us. I knew I could trust Edward with our kids, but i didn't know if I could trust my kids with Edward. Masen especially. He was going to be the one thing that stood in the way of our old happy family life. I needed to figure out a way to make him see I was okay with all of this. But I would contemplate that later. Now, I needed to make sure Charlie got through his surgery.
