After Esme's announcement, I saw Edward go into the house. I knew he was in pain for his mother. I followed him, like the good wife I was, and found him standing in the living room. One hand pinching the bridge of his nose, the other pressed up against the wall next to his piano.

"Are you alright," I asked Edward.

"Bella, as much as I love you, you will never be one-tenth the woman Esme is. Never."

I stood there, completely shocked. Did he really just say that? Did he really mean that? Of course I couldn't be Esme, but I thought I was somewhat close to her.

Edward turned to look at me and his eyes were black as night and frightening.

"Edward," I said.

"Don't," he said.

"Edward, please,-"

"DO NOT SPEAK TO ME! My mother is out there, probably fighting more now than she ever has and all you can think about is yourself!"

"That's not what I was going to say!"

Edward grabbed me by my wrist and threw me against the couch. I let out a whimper of pain when I hit it, but tried to keep it quiet. I had absolutely no idea where all of this was coming from. All I wanted to do was ask if he was okay; if there was anything we could do. I flipped myself over to look at him. He was standing over me, rage filling his eyes. My breathing had become heavy in anticipation of what was coming.

"Everything alright in here," Jasper said from the doorway.

Thank God.

"...fine," Edward said.

"Bella, are you sure?"

"..yes. We're fine."

We stayed like that until we heard the screen door open and close again.

"You will not mention any of this to my family," Edward said. "Understand?"

"Yes," I said quietly.

Edward stood and walked away. After he was back outside, I went into the kitchen to finish up dinner.

"Bella," Jasper said from behind me again.

I didn't answer him. I didn't look at him. I couldn't. I didn't want him to see exactly what Edward's words and actions had done. Instead, I started mashing up the meat for the hamburgers.

"Bella," Jasper said again. I could feel the breath of his words on my skin.

"Jasper, please."

"Did he hurt you?"

"You're lying."

"He didn't. Just scared me, that's all."

From outside, Lilly started crying and I moved to go get her.

"No. Stay here. Edward's perfectly capable of taking care of his children."

“I know, but he hates it when she cries."

"Bella, what the hell is going on with you two?"

"I don't know."

I really didn't. It wasn't that long ago that we were happy. Our lives were perfect. But something happened between then and now; something I completely missed. Something that causes Edward to love me one minute and hate me the next.

I spent the rest of the night trying to figure out where the change happened, but I couldn't put my finger on it. He displayed his anger all throughout our marriage, really. But he was always happy around our children. Masen, Maddy, Charlotte, were clearly his favorites. When Jackson came, he started working more. Then Lilly surprised all of us. That's it. It had to be. Sure, we weren't planning on her, but I refused to believe that she was the source of his anger towards me. Edward loves his children. Probably more than me. Which was fine, I guess. I'd rather him take his anger out on me rather then on them.

Another bonfire was made after dinner. This time Rose and Emmett put the kids down for us. I was in the kitchen again, cleaning up when Edward walked in. He stood behind me and wrapped his arms around me.

"Almost done, love?"

"Just about. Why?"

"Curious. Thought maybe we could go for a walk."

“...sure. I'm almost done."

"Just leave it. I'll finish them for you later."

I grabbed the dishtowel from the counter and wiped my hands. A few minutes later we were walking up our quiet street, holding hands, like we used to do. I desperately wanted to ask him what the hell his problem was, but decided not to, thinking my question would only bring out that side of him. Instead, we just walked for a while. Eventually we made it back to the house, without one word being spoken between us.

When we returned, everyone was still there, all sitting around the fire. Edward grabbed two chairs and together we sat with our family.

"I still can't believe you told Bella before me," Alice said.

"Sorry, but she has a little more experience than you."

"You're going to let me throw you a baby shower, right?"

"Are you going to have time with another store opening?"

"You're family. Besides, I haven't gotten to throw a baby shower in a while," Alice said.

"Well then, I expect nothing but perfection," Rose said winking at Alice.

A few days later I was back at work. My desk had been clean for all of five minutes before a fellow attorney came in and threw down five files that he needed help on. I had just started reading a deposition when one of the partners, Mr. Anderson, knocked on my door. Standing with him was a very familiar person.

"...and this is Isabella Cullen's office. She's one of our newest junior partners. Bella, do you have a minute," he asked.

"Of course," I said.

"This is James Meade, our newest associate."

"Bella, what a surprise," James said.

"You two know each other," Mr. Anderson asked.

"We went to high school together," James said.

“Oh! Well I've assigned the two of you to work together, I hope you don't mind."

“Not at all," I said.

"Good. Well I'll leave you to it," Mr. Anderson said as he walked away.

"Well this is a surprise," James said as he sat in front of my desk.

"A big one. How's Tanya?"

"Don't know. After high school I enrolled in the Marines and have been Iraq for a few tours. The last I heard of her she moved to LA. How have you been?"

"Fine. Married, five kids."

"Cullen...as in Edward Cullen?"

"Wow. I didn't see that one coming."

"Why's that?"

"You were too good for him back then. But married with kids.. wow."

"People change, James."

An hour or so later, James and I were pouring over a case that was coming up for trial, when our receptionist, Jennifer, and Edward walked in.

"Edward. What are you doing here?"

"Thought I'd surprise you and go to lunch."

"Oh. That would be nice."

"I don't think we've met," Edward said extending his hand. "Dr. Edward Cullen, Bella's husband."

"Corporal James Meade."

"You remember James, don't you? We were high school together."

"Oh right."

"James just started with the firm."

"Oh. Well you won't mind then if I steal my wife for an hour or so, then."

"Not at all."

That night, when I arrived home, Edward was making dinner, Maddy and Masen were doing their homework and Charlotte and Jack were in the living room playing.

"Hey! How was your day," Edward asked.

"Busy, but good. Yours?"

"Oh fine. Jack, Charlotte, Lilly and I went to the zoo this afternoon, so I'm sure they're plenty tired."

"Just let me put my briefcase away, and I'll be back to help."

It didn't take long for the kids to take their baths and pass out. Lilly took a bit longer, but she was always fussy at night. I joined Edward in our bedroom. When I walked in, he wasn't in bed like usual. Instead, he was standing in the corner, seething.

"What's the matter," I asked.

"How long," Edward asked.

"How long, what?"

"How long have you been sleeping with him?"

"With who?"

"With James. I saw how you were around him."

"James? What are you talking about?"

"You know what I'm talking about. Are you even sure Lillian is mine?"

"Edward! What has gotten into you tonight?"

Edward started slowly walking towards me, and I noticed his eyes again. I countered Edward's movements and made my way towards the bathroom, as there was a second door that led to a guest room. But Edward was faster, grabbed my wrist and pulled me to him so my back was against his chest. His hands were on my upper arms, squeezing me tight.

"Do you like the way he felt on you," he hissed in my ear.

"Edward, stop. You're hurting me."

"Does the very thought of him make you wet? Does he taste as good as me?"

"Stop it."

Edward still held me in place, but started removing my shirt, his hands were rough over my skin.

"Is he rough with you? Does he pin you down like the whore you are?"

"Stop," I said as I tried to break free of his grip.

Edward threw my ripped shirt to the floor. I tried to break free again, but he still had a firm grip on my wrist. He pulled me back to him, and threw me up against the wall. I stood there, too afraid to move; too afraid to see what he would do if I did move. Even if I could move, Edward was behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling me against him. One hand was on my thigh, the other holding me tight against him.

“Does he touch you like this," he said moving his hand up my thigh and under my skirt. "Do you like it?"

"Edward, stop this. There's nothing between us."

"I don't believe you," he whispered in my ear.

"There isn't! I haven't seen him since high school! Please let me go," I begged.

"No. I'm going to make you remember who you belong to."

Masen POV

"Maddy, you asleep?"

"No. They're arguing again."

"Really bad this time."

We heard Mom scream and Dad yell. This was nothing new these days. Tonight though, was really bad. It usually didn't go on this long and Mom never screamed like that before.

"Masen, we have to do something," Maddy said.

Our door opened, and in the doorway was Charlotte, with her blanket. Maddy motioned for her to come in.

“We really need to do something," Maddy said again.

"STOP IT! EDWARD PLEASE STOP THIS!" we heard mom scream. I could tell she was crying too. Charlotte started crying out of fear.

"It's okay," Maddy said.

"Take Charlotte into Jack and Lilly's room. I'm going to call Emmett."

I waited until Maddy and Charlotte made their way to the nursery before I went downstairs and dialed Emmett's number. It was late, and I hoped he was still up. The phone rang three times before he picked up.

"Uncle Emmett?"

"Masen, why are you calling so late?"

"Dad and Mom are fighting. Can you come over? We're really scared."

"Sure, I'll be right there."

"We'll be in the nursery. Please hurry."

"Rosie, get dressed," I said as I hung up the phone.

"Why," she asked.

"Just do it, please."

Within a few minutes, we were dressed and in our car driving over to Edwards. Thankfully, we were only a mile away and made every light. When we arrived, the front door was unlocked, probably done by Masen.

"The kids are in the nursery. Take them to a neighbor's house," I said as we quietly walked in. We could hear Edward yelling and Bella screaming. She sounded truly terrified. Once Rose had taken the kids back outside, I walked into their bedroom.

There, Edward was on top of Bella. I ran over to him and pulled him off, throwing him to the floor.

"Their outside Bella, go!" I shouted.

She grabbed the comforter from the bed and ran out.

"What the HELL are you doing," I shouted at Edward. "Are you crazy?!"

"Emmett...I don't understand.." Edward said. "I don't know what I was doing."

"What? How could you not? We could hear Bella screaming from outside!"

Edward was shaking and staring at his hands. They had blood on them, from Bella's face. Terror and fear were apparent on his face. From a distance, I could hear police sirens, and knew Rose must have called. She hated this kind of shit.

"I have to check on Bella," Edward said getting up from the floor.

"Oh no! You are not leaving this room!"

I blocked Edward's path, making sure he couldn't leave. Edward may be faster than me, but I was stronger.

"LET ME GO EMMETT!" Edward roared as I pinned him up against the wall.

A minute or two later, the police arrived. I explained what had happened as they put him in handcuffs. Once he was secure with them, I went to find Rose, Bella and the kids. An ambulance had arrived as well as more police officers. Rose was standing next to the ambulance, clearly pissed off.

"Rose, how is she?"

"Beat to hell, Emmett. I called Alice and Jasper and they're on their way. I can't believe this, Em."

"I know," I said taking her into my arms. "I can't either."

The doors to the ambulance opened and inside I could see Bella. Even though she tried to hide herself, I could see bruising on her face and arms.

"We're bringing her in. Do either of you want to ride with us," an EMT asked.

"I will," Rose said.

"I'll wait for Jasper and Alice to come. Call me from the hospital," I said.

"I will," Rose said.
