A short while after the ambulance and the squad cars left, the kids were back in the house, with Maddy, Masen and Charlotte sleeping in a make-shift bed in the living room. Jack and Lilly were in their room, as they young enough to not understand what was going on. It took a good hour to convince Masen that things would be alright, but in truth, I wasn't so sure. I didn't understand what happened tonight. The look in Edward's eyes and the fear upon Bella's face was nothing I had ever seen before.
I was sitting on the front stairs, breathing in the night air and trying to clear my head when Alice and Jasper pulled in. When Alice stepped out of the car, I could tell she was upset.
"Be quiet, the kids are sleeping," I said.
"Where," Alice asked.
"In the living room," I said as Alice darted in the house.
"What happened tonight," Jasper asked.
"I don't know. Rosie and I were watching a movie in bed and Masen calls, saying they're fighting and that he's scared. When we got here, Edward was pounding on her."
"Where's Bella now?"
"The hospital with Rose."
"Is she okay?"
"I don't know."
"And I assume Edward is in jail?"
"Oh yeah. He wasn't happy about it, either."
"I knew something was going on with them," Jasper said shaking his head.
"What," Alice said from the door way. "You knew?"
“I didn't know exactly what was going on, but do you remember the night Esme said her cancer had returned?"
“Yeah," I said.
"Edward and Bella went back in the house. I followed them and saw Edward standing over her like he was ready to hit her."
"Why didn't you say anything," Alice asked.
"I did. But they both said nothing was wrong."
Just then my cell buzzed with a text message:
They're keeping Bella overnight.
Bring change of clothes for her and come get me!
"I'll go," Alice said.
This was going to be a very long day. I had gotten the call from Emmett and Jasper early this morning telling me what had happened. I left Esme in the care of a neighbor she was fond of and made my way to the hospital. I had no desire to see my son, as I would probably end up in a cell right next to him. I was only a few minutes away from the hospital, when my phone rang.
"Carlisle, Alice and Rose just brought Bella home," Jasper said.
"Oh, well I'll turn around then."
"Bring coffee...strong coffee."
Twenty minutes later, with coffee in hand, I walked into the house. Everyone was in the kitchen. Bella was sitting at the table, her body turned away from me.
"Are you alright," I asked setting the coffee down.
She didn't answer.
"She can't talk all that well," Rose said.
As I walked closer to her, she turned her body further away from me, like she was ashamed.
"Let him see," Alice said.
Bella let out a sigh and turned towards me. The entire right side of her face was purple and swollen. Her neck still had bruises from where Edward choked her. I was horrified and saddened.
"It's not as bad as it looks," Bella mumbled.
"What exactly did he do?"
"It doesn't matter," she mumbled again. Each time she spoke, she would pause between each word.
"The hell it doesn't matter. Tell me!"
Bella looked to Rose and Alice.
“Emmett, you tell him," Rose said.
Emmett, Jasper and I walked into the living room where Emmett told me what had happened.
"Apparently," Emmett started, "some guy from high school now works in the same firm as Bella and Edward saw them together. When she got home, she said everything was fine. But when she went to bed, he started in on her."
"Rose said the doctors told her she needs to have surgery to set her jaw and a bone in her face, but because she's so swollen, they have to wait," Jasper said.
"Yeah," Emmett quietly said.
"Where are the kids?"
"The neighbor has Jack and Lilly. Charlotte, Maddy and Masen are school, but Charlotte should be home in a few hours."
If Edward was standing before me, he would have been dead by my hand. I raised my sons to never lay a hand on a woman, and Edward does the worse possible thing. I loved him, but I hated him as well. I was glad that Esme wasn't here, because it would have added to the apparent stress Bella was already under.
"Em, where did you put her pain medicine," Rose asked from the kitchen.
"It's by your purse," he answered.
"How could he have done this," I asked.
"I don't know. But it's probably not the first time," Jasper said.
"Any word on when he's getting out of jail?"
"He's in jail," Bella asked from behind us.
"Yes of course," Emmett said.
"You shouldn't have done that! It's only going to make things worse!"
I walked over to her, and gently put my arms around her to calm her down.
"No. When he gets back,-"
"Don't worry about that. We won't let him near you or the kids," Emmett said.
"He'll just do it again once all of you are gone...he always does."
"How many times?"
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"Stop. She needs to rest," Rose said. "Come on, lets go upstairs."
Two days later Edward was released from jail. We still can't figure out how he managed that. Since he had no place to go, I let him stay at the apartment. Rose, being incredibly pissed, said she would be with Bella and the kids at the house.
"Jasper's on his way over with some food," I said.
"Okay. Can we go to the house tonight? I need new clothes."
"I'll have Rose bring some over."
"No. I want to do it myself."
"There's no way I'm letting you near Bella or the kids."
"Can you at least tell me how she is?"
"No, but I can show you."
I picked up my camera and handed it to Edward. Rose had taken pictures of the bedroom and of Bella's injuries. When Edward got to the first picture, he winced and turned away.
"No, look. Look at what you did."
"DO IT!" I shouted.
I wanted him to see exactly what condition he left Bella in that night.
"I get it, okay Emmett? I understand what I did. I just don't remember doing it."
"I'm serious. I don't remember any of it."
“You'll remember when you go before the judge tomorrow."
"Didn't you know? Bella's getting a restraining order against you. Since you both have to appear, you'll get to see exactly what you did. And I hope it haunts you for the rest of your life."
"Why is she getting a restraining order? It's not like I did it on purpose."
"It doesn't matter. Edward she needs surgery on her jaw because of you! She had to have a rape kit done because of you! To tell you the truth, I hope she doesn't forgive you this time. I hope she takes those kids as far away from you as possible."
"She wouldn't do that. She's only licensed in this state to practice law."
"Can't be too difficult to pass another exam. She's a smart woman."
"Yes she is. And I'm sure once she sees me, she'll realize I didn't mean it and all of this can be over."
"You're delusional," Jasper said walking into the apartment. "I just came from there and she's going back to the ER."
"She's in a lot of pain and her meds aren't helping."
"Can I at least call her,-"
"NO!" Jasper and I yelled.
It was the morning of my hearing and I was beyond petrified. Once the kids were off to school, I grabbed a quick shower and changed into something loose, but still decent looking. As an attorney, I knew I needed to make an impression upon the judge, but I'm sure my face could do it for me. Last night, Emmett came over and picked up a suit for Edward to wear. When I asked how he was, Emmett refused to tell me, which was probably a good thing.
When we arrived at the courthouse, we were ushered into a room where the restraining order cases were heard. Inside that room were two sheriffs, a few private rooms and chairs with people sitting in them. Thankfully Edward wasn't there yet. I knew that even if he was, Jasper and Emmett wouldn't let him near me. But the thing is, I really wanted to talk to him. I needed to know that he was okay. I know I probably shouldn't care, but I did. He is my husband, and I am still his wife... for now.
"He's here," Jasper said.
When I went to see, Emmett and Jasper stood in front of me, blocking my view. A few minutes later, we were called in before the judge. As we stood there, I was shaking. I stood and listened to the judge talk, I tried to sneak glances at Edward. My right eye was still swollen shut, but what I could see was Edward standing there, his head down in shame.
When it was my turn to speak, i couldn't take my eye off of him. I told the Court everything that had happened, but when the judge asked how long I wanted the order for, I replied "however long the court felt necessary." I only wanted time for my surgery and time to heal. The judge asked if I had consulted a divorce attorney, which I replied "not yet," making sure my emphasis was on the word 'yet.'
When Edward spoke, he apologized over and over for what he did and said that he knows what he did was wrong, and that he's ashamed, but that he didn't remember doing it. He agreed to stay away for a month, but asked for me to set aside an hour so he could come and get his clothes, which I agreed to. I told the court that he could come Saturday, since the kids both had their sporting events to go to and that the house would be empty.
