Thunder rumbled in the dark sky over Forks, Washington. Though there was none yet, the atmosphere promised rain, and much of it. A flash of lightening illuminated a dark figure leaping up to one of the second-story windows of a small house. The figure silently opened the window, which had been left unlocked for that purpose. Edward slipped into the room, glancing around and locating Bella on her bed, asleep. He laughed to himself, a smile flitting over his lips. His ‘family’ was in the mountains, at a large field, waiting for him so that they could play baseball. He had promised Bella that she could come, even though her last experience watching them had ended horribly. She wanted to come, so he said he would come by to pick her up. Unfortunately, the storm had ended up coming later in the night than Alice had predicted. Bella must have fallen asleep waiting, thought Edward to himself.

Even though he was eager to get going, she looked so beautiful asleep, and he couldn’t bear to wake her. He sat down on the edge of her bed, reaching over to stroke her hair. She was dressed and ready to leave, she even had her shoes on, and she was lying on top of the covers. Obviously she hadn’t intended to sleep, but here she was, so deeply asleep that she was sleep talking again. He loved listening to her. “…I love you…Edward…” she murmured peacefully. He smiled to himself again, that charming crooked smile that happened whenever he thought of her, and a ghost of a smile passed over her face as well. Then Bella’s face went expressionless for a while, and suddenly, her eyebrows scrunched together, as if in pain. Her eyes squeezed tight. “No…” she moaned, “No, no, not…” Tears began to leak out of her closed eyes, and her fingers clutched at the covers on her bed.

“Bella?” Edward said, quietly.

“No! Not him! …No, Edward…don’t…Oh god, please, no…” Edward’s eyes widened. What could she possibly be dreaming about? She continued repeating similar things, tears dripping down her cheeks. He closed his hand over hers, wiping away her tears with his other hand.

“Shh…Shh, Bella, it’s okay, I’m here,” he whispered to her, looking at her anxiously. “It’s okay, everything’s fine…” Her face relaxed a bit, and the tears ceased. Her voiced quieted to a dull mutter, and then she stopped talking at all. As her continued to stroke her face, her hand moved under his, holding it tightly. Slowly her eyes opened.

“Edward?”

“Yes, I’m here. You had a bad dream.” Her eyes widened as she remembered the nightmare and she sat up suddenly.
“Oh, Edward, it was so horrible, it was awful, it was—“

He pulled her head to his chest, stroking her hair. “It’s alright, Bella, it was just a dream, nothing more.” She nodded, breathing deeply, inhaling his sweet scent. It calmed her somewhat. “Do you want to talk about it?” he asked, curious about what she had said. She pulled away from him, looking up at him with her eyes wide.

“It was James…” she whispered. “He came back…”

Edward’s eyes flashed menacingly. “What happened, Bella? Why was he there?”

“He had me…He was hurting me, to bait you. You were there, he had captured you somehow, restrained you. He was hurting me in front of you trying to make you mad so that you would attack him. I knew… he wanted to hurt you…to kill you…” Bella shuddered. “I was telling you not to… That was what he wanted, he wanted to make you angry, he wanted you to attack him. I was telling you not to… Then I woke up…”

Edward looked away from her. “Bella?” he said, in a quiet voice. “Do you really think that I would let him get away with that? Do you think I wouldn’t hunt him to the ends of the earth and destroy him?”

“Well, I… No, that’s not…I just don’t want you to get hurt, that’s all.”

“And you think I would let you sacrifice yourself like that, for my sake?”

“It wouldn’t be a sacrifice, I’d be happy to do it.”

His eyes flashed back to her, a hint of anger lingering in the dark gold irises. “And you think,” he said, a bit louder now, “that I would be able to live with myself if you did that?” Bella bit her lip, an apologetic look in her eyes. Slowly, the anger faded from Edward’s face. He couldn’t stand to see her sad. “Look,” he said, reaching over to touch her face, “you know I’m never going to let anything happen to you. You know I will always be there for you, I will always protect you.” He sighed. “Even if I wasn’t so in love with you, it’s the least I could do.”

“What do you mean?” Bella asked.

“I mean, every second you spend near me, you are in mortal danger, and you know that. Yet you stay with me anyway.”

“Edward, I love you, of course I stay around you. No matter what.”

“I know,” he said, kissing her head. “And I can’t thank you enough.”

There was a pause while they simply held each other. “Do you still want to go to the game?” he asked. “Or would you rather stay here and sleep? It’s alright, either way.”

“Let’s go,” Bella said eagerly. Edward smiled at her, and picked her up, leaping out the window and racing towards the area where his family was playing.

“I love you, Bella.”
