I slowly traced the broken glass down. On the ground it looked like something heavy had been dragged over the dusty cement. I followed the trail with my eyes to a big black garbage back. Its contents flowing from the untied top, it was filled with lamps, money, jewelry, anything I guessed of which was of value. This was all I could see from where I was standing so I took a deep breath and stepped around the corner.

At first I couldn't see anything, I stood shivering in fear waiting for my eyes to adjust to the darkness, the clouds overhead didn't help.

A figure appeared as my eyes adjusted.

A very large man lying motionless on the ground. I took a step closer, and gasped. His blood was everywhere, still flowing freely from his neck.

My head spun, as the smell of the blood reached my nose.

I took three deep breaths through my mouth and took one more step closer.

The sun came out from behind the clouds, something sparkled in my peripheral vision and the man twitched. A sudden whoosh of air knocked my off my feet, and slammed me into the wall. It was like something ran past me really fast.

I lay huddled on the ground. The only thing I heard was my harsh gasping.

When I sat up my stomach rolled, I swallowed firmly, refusing to empty my lunch in a dark alley. I stood up, took one last fleeting glance at the dead man and ran.

I still had no idea where I was. I just needed to get far away from that alley. I fell down a lot, but I just scraped my hands and knees.

I slowed as I got back to the more populated part of the city. And breathed a sigh of relief as I recognized the street name.

I grabbed my key from my pocket and let myself inside my house. Good, Renee wasn't home yet. I rushed to put my stuff away and get supper started. No need to upset her about this.

I jumped as the door opened and my mom walked through it.

"Hey, honey! How was school? Are you okay? I won't need supper because Phil and I are going to a restaurant before we catch a movie. Are you okay eating alone? I'm sure I could stay longer if you wanted me to?" She rambled on and on until I cut her off.

"No, you go with Phil. I am fine, school was fine, eating alone is fine. Now calm down."

"Sorry, I guess the kindergarteners I teach have so much energy they gave me some." She said, blowing her messy hair from her face. "So you're sure it's okay? Phil will be here any minute."

"Yes, I will be fine"

She scurried away to change. When Phil rang the door bell, she came bound right back out her hair still a mess but she had changed at least.

"Bye Bells. Love you!" And she left.

"Bye." I mumbled too late. As Phil waved.

I turned on the radio loudly as I ate. It helped me from thinking about what I had seen. I sat in front of the TV as I ate my microwaved pizza, only the news was on.

"Only a few hours ago, a man, was found dead in an alley." The factual voice of the reported immediately caught my attention, murders weren't too uncommon to be on the news in Phoenix but this one was different. "The police found him dead still bleeding, after responding to a store's theft alarm. The bag the man was carrying was filled with merchandise from that store. It appears to be that he robbed the store, broke through the window, and was then attacked by some animal. This man was bruised badly, and had a huge cut on his neck. Police say there is absolutely no evidence, and there is no way to tell who or what killed this man. Speaking of no evidence there is still no suspects in the Mark Linder murder"

I turned off the TV as the subject shifted. Most of my homework was finished thanks to my study hall time, and I was too aware to read so I took a shower.

I let the hot water run down my face and I slowly relaxed. The man was dead and whatever had killed it didn't want to hurt me. It would have killed me right there if it had wanted to, so there was nothing to worry about.

I quickly dressed in an old pair of shorts and tank-top, Renee didn't like to have the air conditioner on at night, the noise kept her awake.

I didn't realize how tired I was until I laid my head on my pillow, I almost instantly slipped into sleep.

It was dark but I could see light ahead. Green covered everything, all the trees surrounding me and the ground. I was in a forest I started to run towards the light, but fell on several dead branches covering the ground.

I spun as something rustled behind me. A face peeked out from the branches I knew instantly that it was a man, like you sometimes just know things in dream, the trees obscured so much light I could see nothing but his eyes. They were a dark, dried blood color. I gasped as he looked straight at me. I was so cold, my breath showed in the crisp air. The man's dark eyes never left mine. I shivered again as a harsh breeze blew my hair around me.

The man smiled. His teeth were a brilliant white, shiny even in dark.

He opened his mouth slightly. My scream filled the air as he lunged at me.

My screaming woke myself. There was a sheen of sweat on my face, I wiped my forehead as I sat up. The sheet was twisted around me in such a complicated way I didn't even bother to try and free myself.

I glanced at the clock, and was relieved to find that it was almost 5:30. At least I wouldn't have to try to go back to sleep after that.

Where did this come from anyway, the dark forest and the red-eyed person. I shuddered silently at the vivid memory.

I crawled from my entangled bedspread, and quickly dressed. I winced as I thought of the unread chapter that I had forgotten about.

I sighed as I dragged my trapper keeper from my bag.
