4. Chapter 4: Cancer
Rating 0/5 Word Count 1932 Review this Chapter
It had been a little over a month and a half since Renesmee found out she was pregnant. She was going to give birth soon and everyone knew it.
The shrilling ring of the phone interrupted my thinking.
“Hello,” I answered
“Hi Bella,” Charlie said.
“Umm. Bella I need to tell you something.” Charlie sounded nervous. It reminded me of the time he tried to have the sex talk with me. Luckily then I stopped him before he got very far.
“What is it?” I asked a little worried.
“Bella . . . um . . . I . . . well, um . . . have . . . cancer,” Charlie said.
“Oh,” was that all I could say.
“I’m fine,” he said with confidence.
“I’m so sorry dad.”
“It’s not so bad. Just the doctors say I only have a year to live.”
“Only a year,” I said sadly.
“It’s more than most people have to live at the stage I’m at.”
“Still a year’s not that long.” It was even shorter for me because I was immortal. A year was like a day for me.
“It’s long enough for me.”
“Bella,” Edward called from the bedroom. He walked out and saw the look on my face.
“Dad I have to go. I’ll see you soon okay.”
“Okay. Bella it’s not so bad. Bye.”
When I hung up the phone I faced Edward. “What is it?” Edward asked in response to the look on my face.
“Charlie has cancer,” I said.
“How long does he have?” Edward asked.
“Only a year.”
“I’m so sorry Bella.” He came over and hugged. I buried my face in his chest. Edward hugged me tighter.
“It’s going to be okay,” Edward murmured in my ear. “He’ll be fine. You knew he was going to die someday. I suggest you spend as much time with him as you can. Okay?”
I nodded. I was too sad to speak. Cancer. It surprised me more than it should have. I knew there was history of cancer in our family but it never acured to me that Charlie would get it. Cancer. I could barely think the word let alone say it. Cancer.
“Bella are you going to be okay?” Edward asked worriedly.
“I’ll be fine,” I said in a voice that sounded strange to me.
“Are you sure?”
“Mom,” Renesmee yelled.
“I’m in here.” My voice was back to normal now.
“Hey. Are you okay?” she asked as she took in mine and Edward’s embrace.
“No,” I said.
“Charlie has cancer,” I forced the word through my teeth. They had no idea how hard it was to say.
“Is he going to be okay?” she asked.
“He only has a year left,” I said.
“Oh. Wow.” She had the same reaction I did when I found out.
All of a sudden I remembered that Nessie was half human. Did she have a risk of getting cancer? And if so; how big of a risk?
“I need to talk to Carlisle,” I said breaking the silence. I broke out of Edward’s arm so fast, I was surprised that a vampire could move that fast. I didn’t think I just moved, I didn’t need to think I was so worried. I ran back to the house as quickly as my perfect legs could go.
“Carlisle,” I called when I got there.
“Bella. What is it?” he asked a little worried. I wondered what my face looked like.
“Charlie has cancer. And I was wondering if Nessie had a risk of getting cancer?” I said this right as Edward walked in.
“Oh I didn’t think about that,” Edward said.
“Bella I don’t know. I need different test to determine that,” Carlisle said. “If your really worried I can get the test done as soon as she gives birth. All right?”
“Yes thank you,” I sighed with relief.
“I hate being pregnant,” Nessie grumbled as she walked in. “It takes forever to get places now.”
“At least you are able to get places. I couldn’t when I was pregnant with you.”
“Yeah I remember,” Edward grimaced.
I shot him a dirty look.
“Really? How bad was it when you were pregnant?” she asked.
“Don’t get her started,” Emmett complained. I ignored him.
“It was pretty bad. I remember mostly when Edward could read your mind and when I was in labor.” I shot a look at Edward, his face was in pain at the memory. “The memories are dull human memories so it’s hard to remember.”
“Renesmee,” Carlisle said. Right as he said her name Renesmee’s water broke.
“Someone fined Jacob,” Nessie said.
“Nessie we might not get him in time,” I said as Carlisle carried her up stairs.
“I don’t care. Some one find him.”
“Tanya and Kate, Cameron and Eleazar would you mind looking for Jacob? I want to stay with Renesmee,” I asked them.
“No need to look for him everything just disappeared,” Alice said. Good she was keeping an eye out for things.
“Hey,” Jacob said as he walked seeming untroubled. “What’s going on?”
“Your wife is in labor. That’s what’s going on,” Edward said.
“Now?” he asked surprised.
“Why didn’t any one come and find me?”
“We were just about to. Now get up stairs.”
“Jacob,” Nessie said with relief.
“Nessie who do you want here with you?” I asked.
“Jacob and Carlisle. That’s it.”
“Okay, the rest of us will wait outside.”
We all sat down stairs waiting. And waiting. We could here Renesmee screaming in pain so we knew she was still alive.
After a few hours Jacob came out holding a baby.
“It’s a boy,” he said.
I looked at the beautiful child. His hair was the same as Renesmee’s. His skin was a shade lighter than Jacob’s. The child looked up at me with curious dark brown eyes. His eyes were so dark they were almost black. The baby’s eyes reminded me of Billy’s eyes. To young for him but at the same time to old for him.
Nessie came down the steps. “That was more pain full then I thought,” she said.
“May I?” I asked as I held out my arms to the child.
“Yes,” Nessie answered before Jacob could protest.
I took the baby in my arms and noticed that the skin wasn’t the temperature that I thought it would be. I thought that it would be hot like Jacob’s or Nessie’s skin. Strangely the baby felt cold. Was it possible that two hots could make a cold. Jacob didn’t notice because every thing was cold to him. But I noticed because nothing was cold to me. Everything was warm to me.
“Edward, come over here,” I said with a bit of hysteria in my voice.
“What is it?” he asked as he came next to me.
“Feel the baby’s skin,” I said. He brushed his fingers across the baby’s check bone.
“That’s interesting,” he said. “I wonder…if it’s because he is not a half breed or a full breed. He is his own species maybe that’s why his skin is that way. ”
“Carlisle have you noticed the temperature of the baby’s skin?” I asked.
“Yes, I have,” he responded.
“Why is his skin colder than ours?”
“Huh?” Nessie and Jacob said in unison.
“I’m not completely sure. But I think Edward’s on the right track. His theory is the most possible.”
“What did you name him Nessie?” Rose asked off topic.
“Billy Jr.,” she said with a smile. “Because he reminds me of him.”
“You have to call Billy and tell him that,” I said.
Then my cell phone rang.
“Hello,” I said.
“Bella its Billy,” Billy said
“Oh, hey Billy. Nessie just had her baby we were just about to call you.”
“Boy or girl?”
“What’s his name?”
“You’ll like this,” I said with a smile. “Billy Jr.”
“That’s nice of them.”
“Bella I actually called to see if Jacob was there and you answered my question already.”
“Tell Jacob they found Rachel and that she’s okay,” he said.
“Why don’t you tell him yourself,” I beckoned to Jacob and passed the phone to him.
“Hey dad,” Jacob said.
Jacob paused for a long moment.
Jacob paused again. The moment wasn’t as long though.
“Okay let me tell the others then I’ll come.” He hung up the phone and gave the phone back to me.
“They found one of the kidnappers. He won’t tell them anything though. I have to go now. They need help.” He kissed Renesmee and then he kissed the top of Billy Jr.’s head. Then he left.
“Renesmee, I’m going to visit Charlie tomorrow morning do you want to come with me?” I asked her.
“Can I bring Billy Jr.?” she asked as I handed her him.
“We can but we have to say he’s your brother okay?” I didn’t want to scare Charlie and tell him Nessie had a kid with Jacob. We could say he’s my son so it won’t freak him out. Of course Sue would know the truth.
“Okay. I just don’t want to leave him,” she said.
“I’ll come with you too.” Edward said. “Make it easier on you.”
“Thanks. Anyone else want to come?” I said turning to Alice.
“I want come,” Alice said. “Why are you going to visit him any ways?’
“Charlie has,” I took a deep breath. “Cancer,” I forced the word through my teeth.
“When did you find out?” Esme asked.
“Right before Nessie went into labor,” I said.
“I’m so sorry Bella,” Esme said with sympathy. “Is he going to okay?”
“He only has a year,” I said sadly.
“Bella,” Carlisle said. “I can go to the hospital and look at his test and tell you how bad it is. If you like I mean?”
“Thanks Carlisle. That would mean a lot to me.” I said turning to him.
The next morning Alice, Edward, Renesmee, Billy Jr., and I set off to visit Charlie. We were taking Edward’s car so we all could fit.
“Okay so we know the plan,” I said. “Billy Jr. is Edward and mine son.”
“Yes we know,” Renesmee said with a roll of her eyes.
“Alice will everything work out correctly?” Edward asked looking at her. I would have told him to look at the road but I knew it would be use less.
“I don’t know one of the wolves is there right know,” she grimaced as we drove around the corner to Charlie’s house.
“Hey Guys,” Charlie greeted us. “Who’s this?” he asked looking at the little child in my arms.
“This is mine and Bella’s son,” Edward said.
“What’s his name?” Charlie said after he gave Nessie a hug.
“Billy Jr. When he was born he reminded me of Billy,” I said.
Leah and Seth came outside. It was more than one wolf. Alice grimaced. “Hey guys,” Seth said. “Is this Billy?” he asked as he held out his arms.
“Yeah,” I handed him Billy.
“He’s so cute. Even cuter then Nessie was,” he joked.
“Hey,” Nessie said with an insulted tone.
“I’m just kidding.”
“Let’s get out of rain,” Charlie suggested.
“Seth, I thought you guys were helping look for the others?” I asked this so low Charlie didn’t have a prayer for hearing me.
“We found them all and the kidnapper. Didn’t Jake tell you?” he asked confused.
“Jake’s not home yet,” I whispered back.
“He was the first to leave the woods,” Seth said.
“Seth I hope nothings happened to him,” I said worried.
“Leah and I will go look for him and tell the others,” he said quietly he sounded just as worried as I was. “Leah can I talk to you for a minute alone?” he said this much louder.
“Sure,” Leah said.
Seth filled Leah in really quickly.
“Mom we have to go,” Seth said to Sue.
“Okay be back before dinner,” Sue said.
“Okay,” Leah said.
Seth and Leah didn’t come back before we left.
We left Charlie’s around six: thirty. I was glad we got to see him. Carlisle was going to tell us tonight how sick Charlie was.
When we got home I noticed Billy’s car out front and I smelled werewolves. We got inside and saw that both packs were there. Every signal wolf except Jacob.“What’s wrong?” I asked.
