8. Chapter 8: Decisions

Rating 5/5   Word Count 4265   Review this Chapter

It had been two weeks since Nessie stopped being as brokenhearted as before. We were all really happy that she wasn’t grieving any more.

“Mom, dad,” Nessie said as she ran through the cottage. It was ten: thirty at night.

“Yes,” Edward said.

She ran into our room. “Guess what?”

“What?” I said.

“I’m pregnant,” she said. Edward was on his feet in a minute.

“Where is Jacob?” he asked through tight lips.

“Edward,” I said. “Jacob’s running patrol.”

“When he is done,” Edward said emphasizing each word carefully. “He and I are going to have a little discussion.”

“Daddy,” Nessie said.

Edward’s mood changed automatically. “Yes.”

“Do you love me?” she asked. I knew what she was doing. She knew he would say ‘yes’.

“Yes, why would you ask such a thing,” he said a little angry now.

“If you love me, you won’t hurt Jacob,” she said.

“I said discussion not fight,” he said.

“Nessie you need your sleep. We’ll tell the others in the morning,” I said. “Does
Jacob know?”

“Not yet I want to surprise him,” she said. “Good night.”

“Night,” we said. She walked back to her room.

“Edward when you talk to Jacob be nice,” I said. “Or else.”

“I will,” he said.

“Edward, Jacob’s like a brother to me, not to mention that he might have been my husband.” I hated using the ‘might have been my husband’ card.

“I know,” Edward said.

“Are you telling the truth?” I asked.

“Yes,” he said. He laid down and pulled me down on to his chest and started kissing my neck. “You want to know something?” he asked me.

“What?” I said.

He was still kissing my neck.

“I love you,” he said as he pulled me tighter against his chest.

He didn’t mind that we didn’t talk all night. And neither did me. It was nice that for once since the baby died that we didn’t talk. We were usually discussing about how Nessie was taking the death.

The next morning we went to tell the others that Nessie was pregnant . . . again.

“Hey, Nessie’s out of the house,” Emmett said. Nessie had stopped grieving but she still hadn’t left the cottage.

“Yeah,” she said.

“You seem pretty excited,” Jasper said. “No you are pretty excited.”

“She is,” I said. “As soon as she found out the news she came and told us.”

“I almost walked in on you two,” she giggled.

“I’ve done that before,” Emmett said.

“Don’t remind me,” I said. “Anyways, Nessie tell them your news.”

“You guys are finding this out before Jacob,” she said. “I’m pregnant. Isn’t that great. I’m getting another baby.”

Rosalie came over and hugged Nessie. “I’m so happy for you,” she said.

“That’s weird,” Alice said. “I saw this coming.” We all looked at her. Her eyes went blank.

“That is weird,” Edward said.

“Maybe it is because her most human part is almost over. It’s her last child,” Carlisle said.

“Maybe,” Edward agreed.

So after Nessie has her baby Alice will be able to see her better because the biggest difference between us was that Nessie is able to birth children and we cannot.

“How long have you known?” Esme asked.

“Since last night,” she said.

“Well at least we know what the fetus wants,” Carlisle said.

“A month and a half of being pregnant all over again,” Nessie murmured. “Great.”

“It’s not all bad,” I said.

“I know I just don’t like…” she didn’t finish. “I need to tell Jacob!”

“He should be back soon,” I said.

“What time is it?” she asked.

“Um. Nine. Why?” I said.

“His patrol just ended,” she said.

Jacob shuffled in to the room. “Hey,” he said sleepily. Nessie ran over and kissed him for ten seconds. That woke him up. He wrapped his arms around her waist and started kissing her.

Emmett cleared his throat twice, before they noticed.

“Sorry,” Nessie said as she blushed. Emmett laughed at her blush.

“Nessie tell Jacob,” I said.

“Tell me what?” Jacob said like a typical guy.

“Jacob,” Nessie paused. “We got our second chance.”

“We did?” he asked.

“Yeah, isn’t that great,” she said.

He didn’t say anything he just kissed Renesmee. Without breaking the kiss he lifted Nessie up and carried her outside.

“Well that ends the conversation,” Emmett laughed.

I rolled my eyes. “Carlisle have you looked at Charlie’s tests lately?” I asked.

“Yes, I have Bella,” he said.

“And how bad is it?” I asked.

“Considering how bad his condition is he is doing very well,” Carlisle said.

“Please don’t sugar cote anything. Really how bad is he?” I asked.

“It’s bad. Worse than I thought it would be at this point,” he said. Great I was hoping there would be good news but instead it was terrible news. Edward put his arm around my shoulders.

“Don’t worry,” Edward said. “He’ll be fine.”

I wanted to snap at him like I did that night that we were looking at Seattle. But I didn’t want to do it with everyone here. So instead I shook of his arm. He let it drop with out saying anything.

“I’m going to go call him,” I said. I ran back to the cottage. When I walked in the door I saw Jacob’s shirt on the floor. I went to my room and got my phone. I stepped out side and I dialed Charlie’s number.

“Hello,” Sue answered.

“Hey Sue it’s me,” I said.

“Hey Bella,” she sounded like her mind was somewhere else. Most likely the same place mine was. Worrying about Charlie.

“How is he?” I asked.

“Not so good,” she said. “He’s been asking for you a lot.”

“He has?”

“Yes,” she said. “A lot more than before. I think he might want you to tell him the truth now,”

“The truth? He wants the truth?” I asked amazed.

“He’s been mumbling ‘need to know, ugh, need to know everything’” she said.

“Why don’t you tell him,” I said. I would rather Sue tell him than me. How could I tell Charlie I was a vampire?

“It would be better coming from you,” she said.

“Are you sure you want me to tell him?”

“You don’t have to do it today,” she said. “You can wait a few months.”

I knew I needed to tell him the truth. And I knew that I had to tell him before he died, he needed to know this before he died.

“Are you guys doing any thing tomorrow?” I asked. I wanted to see Charlie as much as I was able to in his last months.

“Charlie has an appointment with the doctor in the morning around nine. But after that nothing. Do you want to come over around eleven?”

“Sure, I’ll bring Nessie and Edward with me,” I said.

“All right we’ll see you then,” she said.

“Okay, tell dad I say hi,” I said.

“I will,” she said.

I knew Edward would come with me even if I did spring it on him last minute. Nessie had to come because I am her mother and I was making her go.

“Bella,” Edward called. I wanted and I didn’t want to talk to him. What was I going to say to him? ‘I just found out my father has been asking for me.’ Or, ‘I just found out Charlie wants the truth, the whole truth.’ No, I wasn’t going to tell him that. But still what was I going to say to him.

“Bella,” Edward said in his velvety voice. He was behind me with arms wound around my waist now. “Are you okay?” he asked.

“I’m okay,” I said my voice not steady.

“Are you sure you are alright?” he asked hearing the unsteadiness in my voice.

“Yes. I’ll be alright Edward,” I said my voice still not steady. I leaned into his chest. “By the way we’re going to visit Charlie tomorrow.”

“Are you sure you want me to come with you,” he asked.

“Yes I want you and Renesmee to come with me,” I told him. It would make it easier on me if they came. I wouldn’t have to see Charlie in his weekend state alone. I knew Sue would be there -- but even though she married Charlie she didn’t feel like a mom to me, just like Phil would never feel like a dad to me -- it still wouldn’t be the same if Edward was not there.

I was so lost in thought that I didn’t hear Nessie and Jake laugh at first. But when I did there laugh was a having fun laugh. At the same time I realized that I also noticed Edward wasn’t behind me any more.

I fallowed his sent into the cottage. I fallowed it till I noticed it lead to Nessie and Jake’s room. He most likely was pulling them off of one another.

“Edward,” I said as I walked in. To my surprise Nessie was still dressed and Jacob was only in his cut off jean shorts.

“What were you two doing?” her father asked her.

“Nothing,” Nessie told him.

“Really?” Edward asked. I hope she could tell he was about to lose his temper. Because I could tell he was about to lose it.

“Why does it matter if we were fooling around? We’re married,” she snapped.

“It matters because it’s my house which means my rules,” he said really angry now.

“Correction,” I said. “It’s my house.”

“You know what I mean,” he said. And I did know what he meant. “If you two want to fool around do it some where else.”

“Enough,” I said. “Jake go for a run. Nessie you needed to go and get a more through test to make sure you are pregnant.”

“Okay,” they said in unison. Jacob went outside and started running. Nessie went to the house to talk to Carlisle.

“Edward,” I said.

“Yes love,” he said in a completely different mood. Is he pmsing or something?

“You need to stop treating Nessie and Jacob like a boyfriend girlfriend couple,” I said. “You need to treat them like a married couple.”

“And if I don’t want to,” he asked.

“That’s too bad,” I said.

I wrapped my arms around his neck and stood up on my tip toes so that I could kiss him. He leaned down and kissed me back. Then without warning he lifted me off the ground and into his arms. He carried me to our room so we would not be disturbed.

“We should get back to the house,” I said awhile later. We had been here for almost three hours.

“Yes we should,” agreed Edward.

We got up and head over to our huge closet that Alice filled every year with new clothes (most that I didn’t like). Once we were dressed we went back to the house.

“You didn’t have to come running back,” Emmett said. “We didn’t need your help.”

“Emmett,” I said. “Do you remember a decade ago when I arm wrestled you?”

“Yeah, you beat me,” he said gridding his teeth.

“That’s right. And do you remember the bet we made?” I asked.

“Of course I do,” he said with a roll of his eyes. Good he remembered. If he was smart he would know what I was getting at.

“What was the bet?” I asked as a huge smirk coming across my face.

“We made a bet that if you beat me that I wasn’t aloud to say one word about your sex life ever again,” he said.

“Very good,” I said. “So what were you doing a moment ago?”

“Talking about your sex life,” he said confused.

“Right and I beat you in the arm wrestling match,” I said.

“Oh. I’m not aloud to say anything about it ever?”

“No never,” I said. “So keep your thoughts to yourself.”

Edward laughed, “That will be kind of hard for him considering I’m a mind reader.”

Emmett was standing next to Edward so all he had to do was ball his hand into a fist and lightly extend his arm so that he could punch him. “Give me some privacy once and a while,” he said as he punched Edward in his shoulder.

“I will do my best,” Edward said. “But I cannot help what I hear.”

“Bella,” Carlisle said. He had just gotten off the phone.

“Yes?” I asked. I was really worried. Was that the hospital he was on the phone with? Was something wrong with Charlie? And if there was, is he going to be alright?

“Charlie is being moved into the hospital today,” he said. “He will be there indefinitely. I thought you would like to know.”

“Thank you for telling me,” I said. I knew he would be in the hospital soon. But still it surprised me.

Sue had called and told me that Charlie was in the hospital. She also told me Charlie’s room number and that Charlie was getting worse.

Edward, Renesmee (pouting), and I went to see Charlie in the hospital. Renesmee wanted to stay home with Jacob, but me being the ‘enemy’ made her come with Edward and me.

“I don’t see why I have to go too,” Renesmee said still pouting. “It’s just Charlie.”

“You have to go because you need to see your grandfather,” I said. “You will thank me for this one day.”

“Yes, and sooner than later,” Edward added. He smiled at me. His smile was just as beautiful as the first time I saw it when I woke up that first day of being a vampire. It seemed wrong to think about how beautiful Edward was right at this particular moment because of Charlie being sick, Nessie being pregnant, and after the death of my grandson.

We went straight to Charlie’s room. Sue was there with Charlie.

“Hey dad,” I said as I walked up to lightly give him a hug.

“Bella,” Charlie said. “You came.”

“Of course I did,” I said. “I told you guys that we were coming.”

“We?” Charlie asked confused. This is what Alice meant about not remembering things or people.

“Yes, Edward and Nessie came too,” I told him.

“Hey grandpa,” Nessie said. She wasn’t allowed to call him Charlie to his face.

“Renesmee,” Charlie said. “How is your brother?”

Out of the corner of my eye I could see Renesmee’s eyes tear up very little. She didn’t let the tears spill though.

“He’s good,” she said. “He's taking a nap that’s why we didn’t bring him.”

“You said Edward is here,” Charlie said to me. “Where is he?”

“Hello Charlie,” Edward said. “How are you feeling?”

“I’m good,” Charlie said. “Not as bad as I thought it would be.” Right as he said that Carlisle walked in. He was taking Charlie’s shift today.

“Hello Charlie,” he said. “How are you feeling today?” He was checking all the monitors and writing stuff down on his clipboard. In response to what Carlisle was thinking Edward had wrapped his arm around me. I looked up at him for an explanation. He only whispered “later” so low Charlie couldn’t hear.

“I’m ok Dr. Cullen,” Charlie said.

Carlisle had heard what Edward had said to me so as he talked to Charlie he turned the clipboard in our direction so that we could see what he had written down. It read:

His condition is worse than before.

Much worse than I expect him to be.

And far more badly than all the other doctors have expected.

He may not live as long as Alice has for told us. You should check with her when we get back. Bella, I am so sorry. I am sorry you had to find out now and this way.

“Well Charlie I don’t know what to tell you,” Carlisle said. “Other than that we are doing all we can to help you.”

“How bad is it Dr. Cullen?” Sue asked.

Carlisle looked at Charlie before he answered. “It’s bad,” he said. “It is an unforgivable illness that he has. Few survive at this stage.”

“Is there any more that you could do?” she asked.

“I told you we are doing all we can,” he said. “We have every doctor here checking on him during their day. I’m not sure what more we can do.”

“Thank you,” she said.

“You’re welcome,” Carlisle said right before he left.

We sat and talked to Charlie for a while. He seemed to be putting on a show. Sometimes we would say something about the past and Charlie looked as if he had no idea of what we were talking about.

Charlie had just started to fall asleep when I said, “I’m going to go get something to drink.”

“I’ll come with you,” Edward said. We walked out. Edward knew that I was going to go talk to Carlisle about Charlie. We went straight to Carlisle’s office without a word.

“Carlisle?” I asked when we walked in. “How bad is bad?”

“Bad is if your planning on telling him the truth you would want to do it soon. Very soon. He doesn’t have long,” he said.

“Is that all?”

“That’s all you need to know,” Carlisle told me.

“Bella I’m sorry,” Edward said as his arm around my waist tightened. I hadn’t notice he had his arm around my waist till now.

“I’m fine,” I lied. I hope Edward didn’t notice.

“Are you sure you’re alright?” Edward asked seeing through my lie.

“Yes, I’m fine. Right now I’m trying to figure out how to tell him the truth,” I lied again but this time it was not noticeable.

Edward chuckled for a moment. Carlisle and I turned to look at him with raised eyebrows.

Why was he laughing? My fathers dying and he’s laughing. What is wrong with him? Did he find something funny in Charlie dying?

“Sorry, Bella we should get back to Charlie,” he said. “Nessie’s in a bad mood.” He chuckled again.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“I’ll tell you on the way there,” he said. He held the door open for me. I walked through with a curious look on my face.

“What’s wrong with Nessie?” I asked.

“She really did not want to come today,” he paused. “She’s making faces at Charlie.”

“She needs to know how important it is for her to be here,” I said.

“She’s young.”

“I was not like her when I was her age,” I told Edward.

“No you were not,” he said. Edward kissed my cheek.

We got back to Charlie’s room pretty quickly. He was a sleep when we got there. Nessie had her cell phone out and was texting Jacob. Sue was there and Seth and Leah had arrived when

Edward and I were talking to Carlisle. Seth looked up and waved. Leah just ignored us completely.

“Hey,” I said.

“Hi,” Seth responded.

“When did you guys get here?” I asked.

“About five minutes ago,” Seth said.

Nessie laughed in response to what Jacob texted her. “Nessie put the phone away,” I told her.

“In a sec,” she said.

“Nessie now,” I said. Edward ran over and grabbed the phone. In the next second he was back at my side.

“Hey,” she said.

“Your mother told you to put it away and you didn’t,” he said. “So there are consequences that you have to pay.”

“And they are?”

“No more cell phone,” he said.

“What!?” she said.

“No phone.”

“Mom,” Nessie said. “Do something.”

“Your father’s right,” I told her.

“But…b-b-but,” she said.

“No buts your father is right,” I said again.

“Thank you,” Edward said.

“You’re welcome,” I said. He kissed me quickly.

We stayed with Charlie and the others for a few hours. We didn’t talk at all. Edward didn’t move his arm from around my waist. We stood like that for the whole time. After a few hours we decided to go.

When we got back home Edward and I went to our room and sat there with each other. Not saying anything.

“Bella say something,” Edward said after an hour.

“Like what?” I asked.

“Something the silence is getting on my nerves,” he said. “It’s driving me crazy.”

“Edward,” I said. “I don’t want to talk. I just want you to hold me.”

He took me in his arms and held me just like I told him I want him to do. We sat like that for the rest of the day. We sat with my head under his chin and his arms around me. For the rest of the night we didn’t move.

The next morning we went to the house. When we got there everyone was seated in the dining room.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

“If you’re going to tell Charlie the truth we need to discuss how you are going to tell him and when are you going to tell him,” Rosalie said.

“I don’t even know that stuff yet,” I told them. “I’m not sure if I will tell him.”

“If you do tell him,” Alice said. “Do it a few hours before he dies. That way he won’t have to be scarred the next time you see him.”

“Can we please not talk about this,” I said. “I don’t want to talk about Charlie dying right now. I barley ever get to see him and now he’s dying. And I won’t ever see him again.”

That got everyone to be quite. “Thank you,” I said. “And the only person I should be discussing this with is Edward. Nobody else.”

“This isn’t just about you though,” Rosalie said. “It’s about all of us. Your decision affects all of us, not just you.”

“But who my decision affects the most is: myself, Charlie, and Edward,” I said.

“Yes, but you are risking our lives just as much as Charlie’s and Edward’s,” Rosalie said.

“Rosalie, this is not your decision to make. It is none of yours,” Edward said looking at everyone. “This is Bella’s decision. Now if you want to help her after she makes her decision that is one thing. But you can not make her mind up for her.”

“Edward is right,” Carlisle said. “Her decision will affect all of us, but it is not our decision to make. If Bella wants some help in making her decision that is one thing, but do not help her unless she asks for your help.” Carlisle turned toward me. “Bella you know the affects that your decision will have, I suggest that you factor in those affects when you make your decision.”

“Thank you Carlisle,” I said. “And I have factored in the affects my decision will have. I have made my decision.”

“A moment ago you said you weren’t sure what your decision would be,” Esme said.

“I had already made my decision,” I paused. “I just wasn’t sure if it was the correct decision though. But I was thinking about it last night and this morning and I have decided to,” I took a deep breath before I continued. “I have decided to tell Charlie the truth. He has a right to know the truth. He is my father and he needs to know before he dies.”

I looked at everyone after I told them my decision. Rosalie did not look happy. Alice was deep in thought. Emmett seemed to support my decision and so did Jasper and Esme. As for Carlisle I couldn’t tell what he was thinking. He was the master of the poker face. I didn’t have to look at Edward to know that he supported my decision. He had told me that he would support my decision whatever my decision may be. Jacob and Renesmee were gazing into each others eyes, which meant that they were here because the others had demanded them to be here. Obviously they didn’t hear or care what I had just said, no matter how it affected them.

“If you need any help with figuring out how to tell him all you need to do is ask,” Esme said.

“Thank you Esme,” I said.

“In my opinion you made the right choice,” Alice said. “You are right he has a right to know. But as a suggestion you should tell him a few hours before he dies.”

“Alice, if I already made my decision why did you not see it coming?”

“I didn’t see it coming because you hadn’t made the decision if you were going to tell us or not,” she said. “Also you were not sure if you made the right decision. And the dog was here.”

“When did you make your decision?” Emmett asked.

“Well I had been thinking about a lot ever since I found out Charlie had cancer,” I paused. “But I started to thinking about more when Sue told me Charlie kept on saying he wanted to know the truth. After yesterday morning I had it on my mind on weather I should tell him or not. I didn’t really make my decision till early this morning. In fact my decision wasn’t made till when Edward and I were at the river.”

“I didn’t think it would take that long to decide,” Emmett said.

“Of course it would take long to decide,” I said.

“I know that,” he said. “I just thought . . . I mean its April. You found out Charlie had cancer when mid October. It’s been half a year since then.”

“Thanks a lot Emmett.”

“In October Charlie said he had a year to live,” I told him. “He really had only eight months. I only have two months left with him.”

“Oh sorry.”

“I think that you made the wrong choice,” Rosalie said. “Charlie shouldn’t die after he finds out. If you wanted to tell him you should have told him earlier.”

“I thought I would have more time with him,” I said. “But my time with him got cut short.”

“Sorry we forgot about that,” Emmett said.

“Well make sure you don’t forget it this time.”

Renesmee sighed. I looked at her she was still looking into Jacob’s eyes not caring what was happening at the moment. All of a sudden she placed her hand on her stomach.

“Jacob feel this,” she said not caring that we were all looking at her.

Jacob placed his big dark hand over Nessie’s slightly swollen stomach. Nessie moved his hand over a little bit.

“It’s kicking,” Jake said.

“He’s not an it,” Nessie snapped at him.

“I meant he’s kicking,” he fixed.

“Oh okay.”

In the mists of all the sadness: Charlie dying, me trying to figure out how to tell him, after the death of Billy Jr. One good thing was happening Nessie was going to get another child. Or so we thought of it as a child.
