Twin Suns

twinsunsbanner Jane is a lowly maid, living in the town of Volterra, Italy. After meeting two strange, pale, men in the market, she is whisked away in the middle of the night by Felix. Soon she discovers the amazing world of the vampires, but does she really want to be a part of it? (Originally written for the Jane One-Shot competition, before I realized the canon rule (and what the canon was. Where in the books did it say anything about being burned at stake?) You'll probably recognize some parts. The first chapter is the one-shot, and the rest is a continuation. And yes, I am overly proud of my banner :) Thanks to stardoll.com for helping me make the face.)

It is a beautiful sunny day. The sky is a heavenly blue and the marketplace is cool and shady, a relief from the heat of the afternoon. I follow my mistress through the crowd of people. My cheek still smarts from when she slapped me this morning for spilling her tea. I detested my job as a maid, but it kept me close to Alec. Besides, I would have my revenge later. I always did. I knew just how to make someone squirm. As if my thoughts had been answered, Signor Giovanni and his wife passed by, the man Mistress has been having an affair with for a month. I have been well aware of their meetings, but she has no clue.

"Oh look," I tell her. "Good afternoon Signor! Signora!" Mistress stiffened beside me. I smirk to myself and continue on. "Such a perfect couple. And Signora Giovanni- what an honourable woman. So faithful, true, honest. See how devoted she is to her husband."

"Yes, that's right." She snaps and drags me off. In her hurry to get away, she walks right into two tall men in long, black, traveling cloaks.

"I'm sorry." says the first, bowing his head. His skin is paper white. How can he stand to wear that heavy cloak in this heat?

"What's that Eleazar?" he asks as the other whispers in his ear. He raises his eyebrows, intrigued. "How interesting." He murmurs. "My apologies for getting in your way." He takes Mistress's hand. He is still for a few seconds, as if concentrating. Then he kisses her hand and sweeps away. What a strange man. As he walks away, a sunbeam hits his face. I swear his skin shimmers. I rub my eyes. They must be playing tricks on me.

At the manor, I sort Mistress's purchases and put them away. I return to my room obediently and take out my embroidery. There is a slight click as the door opens. I face a mirror image of myself- clear blue eyes, light cropped hair. "Alec!"

He comes over to where I am sitting, silent as the shadows. "Janey." He plucks my embroidery from my hand and tosses it into the air. With his long fingers, he covers my eyes and ears. Our favourite game. I cannot see or hear where it fell. If it had been food, he would have covered my nose too. I stumble around until I bump it with my toe. I bend down to pick it up. I turn to him and smile. Holding out my hand, I wiggle my fingers. "My reward?"

His eyes twinkle. "Whatever are you talking about sister dearest?" He always brings me treats- cookies and pastries and such. The scullery maid is quite fond of him.

"Come on." I say, poking him. He reaches into his pocket, but instead of food, he pulls out...

"Oh!" I gasp. A golden heart on a delicate chain. It shines in the lamplight. It has some dirt on it, but it's beautiful all the same.

"But Alec! It must have cost a fortune."

"Actually, it was free."

"You stole it?"

He laughs. "Don't be silly. I found it. Lying on the ground when I was chopping wood for Mistress."

"She must have lost it. She will be furious! We must return it straight away."

"Has she made you crawl in the dirt for it yet?" He scoffs.

"No, but..."

"Then she won't notice." He interrupts me. He presses it into my palm. "See you tomorrow."

"Good night."

I wake, surrounded by darkness. I feel arms scoop me up. I open my mouth to scream, but swiftly, a hand covers it. I kick out and my toe swells in pain. The arms that hold me are hard as stone. They whisk me out of the manor and into the night. I squeeze my eyes shut and pray it is only a dream. Perhaps it will be gone when I open them. But it is not.

"Open your eyes Jane." I obey, and find myself looking into the red-eyed gaze of the man from the market. I cry out and scramble backwards.

"Shhh..." he whispers. "It's going to be alright." And then he bites me.

It feels like the time I burnt myself tending the fireplace. Except this time it is all over my body, coursing through my veins. I am not aware of time passing, just the pain.

And then it is over. I open my eyes. Everything is sharper. I can see strands of cobweb in the corner, the grooves in the wood of the ceiling. I look down at my hands, now the color of fresh milk.

"Jane." It's the man from the market, the one with paper skin in the black traveling cloak. The face I saw before my world was set on fire. He tells me everything- the vampires, the Volturi, and most important, my power. "You now hold the honour of being a member of our guard. That is what you want. Isn't it?"

I am eager to agree when I feel the soft metal against my skin. I finger the chain around my neck. I choose my words carefully. "I will, just not yet."

He looks at me, confused.

I dash towards the door. Aro grabs my arm.

"Ah." He says. "He pushes me backwards. "I'm sorry, but that is not allowed. Your brother is not one of us."

I growl and push back, but he's still quite strong for an old vampire.

"Chelsea!" He calls. Chelsea... who was that? The girl that loosens and strengthens bonds. How dare they try to separate us! I seethe- and suddenly Aro is writhing on the floor. My power, I realize. I focus harder, and he screams in agony. I stop. Why am I hurting Aro? Silly me. Wait, no. No, no, NO. I fight against it. I turn to see Chelsea. With a little concentration, the struggle stops and Chelsea drops to the floor with a yelp. I run, faster than I ever have before until I reach a ladder. I climb it up and out into the streets of Volterra.
