Chapter 13: Indication

I awoke around five that next morning and dressed in my black Capri sweats and black tank. I pulled my hair up in a ponytail and went downstairs.

"You're up early," Carlisle said, looking up from his morning paper.

"I'm just going to go for a run."

"One of us should go with you. It's not safe for you to be out by yourself."

I sighed knowing that this was not a debatable conversation. "Anyone but Emmett. He'll just turn it into a competition."

"I'll go," Edward said. "If you want."

"Sure," I said, looking to Carlisle to see if he had any objections.

"Well, you should be warned. Edward is the fastest runner out of all of us."

"Oh, joy I'm going to be saddled with Speedy Gonzalez."

"Arriba, Arriba!" Edward trilled, making us all laugh.

We jogged down the driveway and up the road.

"I'm a little conflicted, Edward," I thought.

"About what?"

"What happens if when Carlisle changes me I'm not as controlled as all of you? What if I hurt someone or...kill them?"

"No one said that it would be easy, Jasmine. It's not as easy for us as you think either. The control we learn to exhibit with the humans took years and years of practice. Even now it's still a little difficult."

"Do you think I should let Carlisle do it before I go blind? I mean, I can't imagine being in darkness for even a second, much less until graduation."

"That's a decision only you and Carlisle can make, Jasmine."

"I'm scared, Edward."

"Scared of being one of us, or scared of how things will change between you and Trevor?"

"More of the latter, I guess. I don't know what I'm saying. There really is no right time to become a vampire is there?"

"No, not really. Just give yourself time to think on it. It will workout somehow."

I jogged at a steady pace. While I was sweating as though I was running a marathon, Edward kept up with me easily, humming. Could have been worse, I suppose. I'm sure Emmett would be taunting me by now.

"How far have we gone out," I asked after a few minutes.

"We..." Edward paused and stopped moving.

"What's wrong?"

"We should go back," he said, pulling on my jacket.

"Edward, what's wrong?"

I looked to where he was staring. Up the road was Matt's truck, parked by a tree. Inside he was having sex with some girl, but wait. It was not just with some girl. It was Gabby.

"That son of a bitch!"

"Not here, not now," Edward said, dragging me back in the direction we came. He took me in the woods and threw me over his shoulder. He ran me all the way back to the house. By then, all of the Cullen's were up and about.

"That was fast. I thought you guys would be...what's happened?" Carlisle said.

Rosalie flew by my side, taking my hand. "What happened, Jasmine?"

"Then why are you crying?"

I rubbed underneath my eyes and sure enough, there were fallen tears. I stuttered, trying to get the words out. "Matt-Gabby-child molester-I-."

"What she's trying to say is that while we were jogging we saw Matthew Jensen having sex with Gabriella Wallace-Trevor's little sister."

Shock and anger was etched on the faces of the Cullen's. I reached in my pocket, pulling out my cell phone preparing to call Trevor, but when I did, all I could see was Gabby's face.

"I'm scared for myself if Trev or my parents find out, and I'm so scared for him." Her worried voice echoed in my head and my resolve began to fade. I dropped the cell phone on the couch, holding on to the back of it for support.

What was I supposed to do? Gabby was my friend and she trusted me enough to confide her most intimate secret. Then again, Trevor was my boyfriend and he trusted me too and I owed it to him to tell him that snake who called himself a friend was robbing his sister of her innocence. What is it with the men in this world? She was only fifteen years old!

Two things happened in that single moment. One, the inside of my body grew warm, warm as if someone dropped a match on a trail of gasoline. Second, the flames in the fireplace flared.

"Jasmine, are you all right?" Carlisle said. I could feel them all watching me, expecting me to fall apart.

"I'm fine. I'm just going to go upstairs and take a nap."

"What the hell was that?" Emmett said, putting the fire out with the fire extinguisher.

That morning was one of the most unusual mornings any of us had ever had. Jasmine awoke early to take a jog. Her father once told me that she and mother jogged every Sunday morning. Edward volunteered to go with her. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary until they came back.

"That was fast. I thought you guys would be...what's happened?" I said when I noticed the tears running down Jasmine's face.

Rosalie flew to her side, taking her hand. We all thought she was still emotional from yesterday. "What happened, Jasmine?"

"Then why are you crying?"

She rubbed underneath my eyes as if she were shocked that she was. She started to stutter, trying to tell us what happened. "Matt-Gabby-child molester-I-."

"What she's trying to say is that while we were jogging we saw Matthew Jensen having sex with Gabriella Wallace-Trevor's little sister," Edward said, filling us in.

I was appalled. I treated Gabby when she was a little girl, by some accounts she was still a little girl. Jasmine reached into her pocket pulling out her cell phone. She wanted to tell Trevor what was going on. Then she froze. She dropped her phone on the couch and held onto the back of it for support. We watched her as she tried to calm down. Before any of us could say anything, the flames flared in the fireplace, reaching the outside mantle. Emmett ran to the kitchen, grabbing the fire extinguisher.

"Jasmine, are you all right?" I said. Something about the flames spontaneously flaring did not sit well with me.

"I'm fine. I'm just going to go upstairs and take a nap."

"What the hell was that?" Emmett said, watching her run up the stairs.

"Carlisle," Esme said, touching my arm.

I looked to where she was looking. Over on the back of the couch, where Jasmine had been holding on to, were two burn marks in the exact shapes of her hands.

"What is going on here?" Bella said, rubbing her forehead.

"Carlisle, what was that?" Emmett asked again.

I headed to the stairs. I need to go to my study so I could think. There was only one answer I could give my family without further research. "An indication of what's to come."
