Chapter 15: Blind

As difficult as it was, I decided that Gabby's secret was not mine to tell. Instead, I minimized my contact with both Matt and Gabby. The hardest part, was keeping it from Trevor. If it were my sister, I would want to know. The Cullens respected my decision, although it was very difficult not to take Emmett up on his offer to break Matt's kneecaps.

On top of all of this, my vision was rapidly declining. Carlisle's treatments had not helped as much as we wanted it to. I had to wear glasses and I was no longer allowed to drive. I could no longer do small things, copy notes from the blackboard, read the words on a computer screen, I couldn't even cook for myself.

"There all done. The boys are going to love it," Esme said, finishing the breakfast for the awards ceremony. It would begin in an hour and Esme cooked everything for me.

"Thank you for doing this for me...Mom," I said, hoping she would be all right with me calling her that.

She turned to me, hugging me. I knew she could cry if she would. The guys loaded the trays of food into Emmett's jeep because it had the most room, even though he complained the whole way to the school about how hard it would be to get the stench of human food out. By now, everyone knew I was living with the Cullens and why. I was even sitting with them at lunch. Emmett loved it the most because he insisted on having dare contests that subsequently had me eating his food.

That morning, Alice dressed me in a black slit long sleeved dress with a shirred scoop neck and banded hem. I wore my hair curled and off to my right shoulder. I wore my necklace everyday, only taking it off when I bathed. Classes were cancelled for the day. I swear it was as if the whole town stopped for this ceremony. Emmett, Bella and Alice decided to come with me while the others went hunting.

"I can't believe you stand here and listen to this crap every year!" Emmett whispered as the coach stood to make his introductory speech after the players were seated at the tables and the parents and guests were seated.

"I know it's boring. I promise we'll leave soon. I just want to watch Trevor get his award," I whispered back.

"I hope so because somewhere out there is a very pissed off grizzly with my name tattooed on his ass."

"Sshh," Bella said, quieting our laughs.

"Oh, the coach is about to thank Jasmine," Alice said, bouncing again. She reached into her purse and pulled out her camera, a small thing she neglected to mention she brought along.

"Before we begin, I would like to ask Jasmine Butler to join me up here."

Oh God. I took a deep breath and walked up to the platform where Coach Sauers stood. I peeked over to the tables where the players were seated and caught Trevor's eye. He smiled his brilliant smile at me and I lost my breath.

"Now, for the past few years, Jasmine has been preparing meals like the ones before you, and I for one will be the first to say that I'm going to really miss her when she graduates. So, as a way of saying thanks for all of her hard work and dedication, they guys and I decided that this little Spartan deserved recognition. Jasmine, on behalf of myself, the other coaches, and the players, I want to say thank you for everything and it is my honor to present you with this year's M.V.P Award."

My mouth fell open as the guests and the players applauded. Alice moved closer to get a good angle of my shocked expression. Coach Sauers picked up the crystal football mounted on a wood platform and turned to me.

He gave me the award and everyone stood applauding me. It took everything I had not to cry. I looked over at Trevor, guessing that he knew all along and decided not to tell me. He smiled widely, confirming my guess. I took the award and went to stand in the back with Emmett, Bella and Alice.

"Alice, you knew I was getting this award, didn't you?"

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Would it have been a surprise if I told you? Exactly. You should have seen your face. It was priceless!" she said, playing the video back.

I held on to my award, blocking out everything else. It was amazing, it sparkled and shimmered against the lights. It was the most beautiful award I had ever received.

"...their replacements, Antonio and Robert Lovell," Coach Sauers said.

I looked up feeling the award slip through my fingers. I couldn't move as I watched the two men walk into the room from the side door dressed in suits. I faintly heard Bella and Alice calling my name. I almost felt Emmett shaking my shoulder. Everything slowed down. The air left the room and it was as if I was under water, barely hearing the sounds around me. I watched the coach shake hands with his two new players while the guests applauded. The student reporters snapped their pictures for the paper, they were going to be front page news. I saw Trevor looking from me to them, them to me, trying to make the connection. Robert looked around the room, his eyes landing on me. He looked shocked first. Then his shock quickly turned into smug jubilation. He turned and whispered to Tony who held the same shocked expression. But when he looked at me, there was that same hate he held in his eyes that night.

"Oh my god," I managed to choke out. I must have been hyperventilating or making some kind of noise because everyone was now staring at me. No, I had to get out of there. I turned pulling on the door, feeling so trapped that it slipped my mind you had to push the door in order to open it. I thought being outside, inhaling the cold air would make things better. It didn't. The memories of that night replayed themselves in my mind. My head throbbed and my stomach churned. I made it all the way to Emmett's jeep before vomiting in front of the back tire. I held my head as the voices of my rapists screamed at me louder and louder. My vision turned cloudy and I could no longer make out the shapes in front of me. I felt someone grab my arm and I couldn't stop my self from screaming and pushing against them.

"Jasmine, Jasmine, it's Emmett!" he said, trying to calm me down.

"Emmett?" I whispered weakly. I could see the outline of his face, but not his actual face.

"What happened?" I heard Bella say.

"I'm calling, Carlisle!" Alice said, from somewhere to my left. "It's going to be ok, Jasmine."

No, it wasn't. "They're here," I said. That was the last bit of strength I had before my body gave out and my eyes fluttered close.

Alice, Emmett, Jasmine and I stood beside the double doors after she got her award. We had to quiet Emmett down several times as he made loud snoring noises. Then when he grew bored of that, he turned to bragging about how he could play the positions of every single player on the team and how he could win the games that they lost single-handedly. Alice gave up on making him be quiet. Instead, she started to record him. We were all laughing until we heard Jasmine let out a strangled gasp.

"Jasmine, what is it?" I whispered. She stared at the two men walking into the room as they shook hands with the coach. Emmett quickly caught her award as it slipped through her fingers.

"What's wrong with her?" he asked us.

"Jasmine? Jasmine, what's wrong?" Alice said, as Emmett shook her shoulder. She started turning her head from side to side as if she was seeing something she couldn't believe.

"No," she whispered.

Then she started gasping loudly. Her eyes stretching wider. She started shaking her head faster, and tears fell from her eyes.

"Oh my god."

She turned to the door pulling it instead of pushing. Emmett pushed the door open and she took off outside. Alice and Emmett followed her out. I looked at the men. One was smiling as if he had just won a million bucks and the other wore a hateful grin. Something was wrong here. Trevor looked at me worriedly. I held up a hand, motioning for him to stay there. I hurried outside and saw that Jasmine was throwing up behind Emmett's jeep. She started holding her head and crying loudly. Emmett grabbed her arm to help her stand and she started fighting him as if he were a mugger in an alley.

"Jasmine, Jasmine, it's Emmett!" he said, trying to calm her down.

"Emmett?" she said his name and squinted her eyes as if she could not see him.

"What happened?" I said, replaying the events in my head. None of it made any sense to me.

"I'm calling, Carlisle!" Alice said, grabbing her phone. She rubbed Jasmine's back, trying to soothe her as the tears flowed endlessly. "It's going to be ok, Jasmine."

Jasmine shook her head again. "They're here," she said. Her eyes fluttered close and she grew limp in Emmett's arms. He picked her up and carefully laid her across the backseat of his jeep. I got in the back with her, resting her head on my lap.

"Carlisle, something happened to Jasmine!" Alice yelled, as Emmett quickly backed out of the school parking lot.

"Alice, calm down. Tell me what happened," we heard him say.

"I don't know! One minute everything was fine. We were at the ceremony and she was laughing and talking with us. Then these two guys came in and she started freaking out."

"NO!" I yelled as it all started to click into place. Emmett and Alice looked back at me as I stared at Jasmine's twitching arm.

"Was that Bella?" Carlisle said.

"Bella? What's wrong with Bella? What's going on?" We heard Edward yell.

"Everyone, just turn your phones on speaker," I said, stroking Jasmine's hair as her arm continued shaking.

"All right, we're on speaker. What's going on, guys?"

"It's them, Carlisle. Before Jasmine fainted she said they were here and we didn't know what she meant at first, but now it all makes sense."

"What makes sense? Who are ‘they', Bella?"

"Robert and Antonio Lovell. The Robert and Tony Jasmine told Rose about. Carlisle," I said, my voice breaking on his name. "Jasmine's rapists have come to Forks."

Carlisle switched his cell phone to speaker mode as Edward, Rosalie, Jasper and I gathered around to figure out what was happening to our Jasmine.

"All right, we're on speaker. What's going on, guys?"

"It's them, Carlisle. Before Jasmine fainted she said they were here and we didn't know what she meant at first, but now it all makes sense."

"What makes sense? Who are they, Bella?"

"Robert and Antonio Lovell. The Robert and Tony Jasmine told Rose about. Carlisle," she said as her voice broke. "Jasmine's rapists have come to Forks."

No. How could this be? Rosalie hissed, uprooting a large tree. Edward pinched the bridge of his nose, not moving, not breathing. Jasper stood as still as Edward. His eyes were darkening from the golden brown to a solid black. Carlisle squeezed the phone so hard it shattered into tiny pieces. Edward reached into his pocket, handing Carlisle his phone, then he returned to his previous stance. My family was in so much pain and I was helpless to them.

"We need to get back to the house," Carlisle said finally. He slipped his arm around my waist. "We are going to get her through this, my love. Please try to calm down."

It did not dawn on me that I had been dry sobbing throughout all of this. I took a couple deep breaths and we walked towards the house. Then we started jogging. Before we knew it, we were in full sprints. By the time we made it back to the house, Emmett was carrying an unconscious Jasmine from his jeep.

"Jasmine," Rosalie whispered.

"Emmett, take her up to her room," Carlisle said as we all hurried into the house. Emmett placed Jasmine on her bed and Carlisle returned with his medical bag. "Tell me exactly what happened before she fainted."

"She started freaking out. She was hyperventilating and then when she got outside she started throwing up," Alice said as Jasper held her tighter.

"Then she started holding her head like she was in pain," Bella added.

"Her arm was twitching and when I touched her she started fighting me like she didn't know who I was. When she calmed down, she started squinting. Then she passed out," Emmett said sadly.

"Migraines and nausea. Please, not now," Carlisle whispered checking her pupils with his light. "They're unresponsive. Damn."

"What does that mean," I asked, rubbing her forehead with the back of my hand.

"It means it's too late. The shock of seeing her rapists was the final straw. Jasmine has gone completely blind."

"My god, Carlisle. How much heartache can this girl take?" I said, feeling so frustrated.

"What are we going to do about these guys?" Jasper said as if he was already forming a plan.

"You should have seen the looks on their faces when they saw Jasmine. One was happy and the other, he looked at her with so much hate. This isn't over, guys. This isn't over at all," Bella concluded.
