Chapter 3: Odd

~EPOV~

Flashback

"There's something that I need to discuss with you all," Carlisle said as we settled into the dining room at the long table. "I assume that you all remember Jasmine Butler?"

We all nodded, but there was something in Carlisle's eyes that made us a little on edge. Especially myself because Carlisle decided that this conversation was the exact time to mentally recite every volume of his medical texts in Latin.

"Last week, she came to me about migraines and vision problems. It turns out that Jasmine has a recessive vision deficiency. The crash seemed to have triggered it and now she is slowly but surely losing her vision."

"Carlisle, what are you getting at, exactly?" Rosalie asked with a distinct edge in her voice.

"Her father, Elliot was a colleague and friend of mine. I feel...I know that it's dangerous and unfair to you all, but I'm going to ask her to move in with us."

There was silence all around the table. But the thoughts spoke volumes.

"He seems so upset. I would love to have another daughter, but what will that do to this family?" - Esme.

"This is not going to end well. How much control does the man think I have?"- Jasper.

"All right! I'm finally going to have someone new to beat in XBOX! She's kinda cute too. Uh-oh, Edward, please don't tell Rose I just thought that!" -Emmett.

"What the HELL is he thinking? Must we bring home every single stray human with problems? Why call it a secret anymore? Why not shout it from the fucking rooftops?"-Rosalie.

"Hmm, she seems to have a very good fashion sense. I wonder if she likes shopping as much as I do. And her hair is just gorgeous! I can't wait to style it for her!"-Alice, of course.

And then to my left, as always, my Bella was completely silent. Only now, she seemed to be lost in thought. I squeezed her hand gently and she gave me a reassuring smile. She was the last to join our family, but she fell into the lifestyle with the grace of a pro. As if knowing what I wanted, she removed her shield.

"I'm sure I will be able to handle having a human living with us. I just hope she likes us." -my Bella thought.

Finally after countless moments of verbal silence, Rosalie spoke up.

"All right, so let me see if I understand this correctly?"

Carlisle turned to Rosalie with a weary expression. "Yes, Rose?"

"Not only are you bringing a human home, a home crawling with vampires mind you, but a human that's going
blind? What the HELL, Carlisle? Are you trying to serve her up on a platter?"

Carlisle sighed as Esme held his hand in hers. "Guys, and I mean Rosalie in particular, this decision has already been made. I have absolute faith in all of you-."

"Faith has nothing to do with it! Have you smelled her lately, Carlisle? She smells so sweet like...like sugar cookies or something! That's enough in itself. What's going to happen every month when she has her cycle? Not only is having her here madness Carlisle, it'll be torture!"

"Rosalie, for the sake of the family-."

"For the sake of the family? You know I wish I could just borrow Edward's ability for five minutes to figure out what's going on in that head of yours, because whatever it is it sure as shit has nothing to do with the sake of our family!"

At that point, I saw something I never believed could happen. Our leader, our father, the sensible Carlisle, let out a growl so loud it echoed throughout the house. He dropped Esme's hand and leaned over the table. His now black eyes made Rosalie tremble in her seat.

"Never,
ever question my love for this family, Rosalie." His teeth clenched together on her name. "Now I understand that this is a very risky situation, but it WILL workout."

As he said this, Alice was suddenly swept into a vision. There was the human, Jasmine, she and Alice and Bella were in a room covered in lilac and cream, dancing, very sexily. Emmett, Jasper and I walked in and started to dance as well. Hmm...

Alice opened her eyes and squealed. "Carlisle's right! Everything's going to be fine."

Carlisle sighed and his trademark smile reemerged. "There you have it."

End of Flashback

"How are you doing over there, Jazz?" I asked my brother as he stared at the television without the slightest amount of interest.

"Surprisingly well, actually. I half expected to want to tear her to bits when she walked through the door, the scent hit me like a ton of bricks. Then it just faded away."

"Hmm, I wonder why."

"So, what was she thinking when she saw us?" Emmett asked, nudging me in my ribs.

"Well, she wondered why you never played football. She thinks you would make a good linebacker-."

"Hell yeah I would! Why didn't I try out again?"

"Well, there's the possibility of someone bleeding. You might actually kill one of the humans when they slam into you, oh, and possibly because you sparkle in the sun you big oaf!" Jasper said, smacking Emmett on the back of his head.

"Anyway, she thinks Alice is suffering some sort of sugar rush."

"That's understandable," Jasper said with a smile.

"And she also has a slight crush on Jasper."

I smiled as my brother's face became abruptly serious.

"Are you serious? That is awesome!" Emmett roared.

"Shut up, Emmett," Jasper snapped. "She knows that I am with Alice, right?"

"Yes, she just thinks that it is very sexy when you glare at everyone. I believe she referred to you as a torutured soul."

Emmett sniggered and if it was possible, Jasper would have blushed at that exact moment.

"Whatever."

"However, there was something else." Now I had their undivided attention."Her mind is...this is really hard to explain. It is as if her mind is riddled with pain."

"Well, dude she lost her parents. She really has no one left. If that doesn't leave you in pain, what will?" Emmett said, furrowing his brows in confusion.

"I know that, but that is not what I mean. I see these images in her mind. She is running through the forest. She is crying and she is afraid."

"I think I know what you mean. There were a couple times when she stood there and she was afraid. I thought it was because of us, but now that I think about it, she's completely at ease with us." Jasper tilted his head as he considered this.

"Edward, what exactly are you trying to say man?" Emmett asked, impatience dripping on every word.

"I don't know yet. I think something's wrong, but I don't know what yet."

Upstairs, we could hear the girls discussing Jasmine's relationship with Trevor Wallace. Apparently, it was the typical high school boyfriend/girlfriend drama. He wanted her, she wanted him but neither was brave enough to admit it. Humans! They live their lives as if they are the immortals when really, they have a shorter lifespan than most animals.

"PRAY THEY DON'T DECIDE TO CALL AND SAY WE HAVE TO CARRY THEIR BAGS!" Emmett yelled, pulling me out of my thoughts.

"Em, you weren't supposed to respond to that! A regular person would not be able to hear their conversation from UPSTAIRS!" Jasper growled.

"Emmett is so funny, although I wonder how he managed to hear our conversation from downstairs?" - Jasmine.

Perfect. I rolled my eyes at Emmett. After a couple minutes, he took off upstairs with his mind set on challenging Jasmine to XBOX.

"She is a very odd human." I said to Jasper as he imagined how Jasmine would take the news of our secret.

"You would know. I thought the only odd human left became your wife."

I smiled. My smile faded as I was swept into Jasmine's thoughts again. This time as she ran, I could hear faint voices and laughter behind her.

"What is it?" Jasper said, taking note in the change of my mood.

"I don't know yet. I just hope this will not turn out the way I think it will. What are you getting from her."

"Waves of overwhelming sadness. Should we tell the others?"

"No, when she's ready for us to know, she'll tell us."
