The news came on. Multiple pile up on the motorway. I grimaced. Why couldn't it be a single kill? Why a multiple pile up, costing lives? Unnecessary lives! Cara gazed at the screen.

"Time for the next step tomorrow. Cara, I need you to stay at home"

"I told you my plan. If you'd found out your dad had died, you wouldn't be in school"

"So why are you going to be in school?"

"I'm not. An agent will arrive later, pretending to be a social worker. I hope that Jasper will have called me by then and I'll meet up with him. With a bit of luck I'll be able to get him to let us stay with them"

"In a house full of vampires?" she said, fear spreading over her face.

"Don't worry. It'll be fine. And they know, that we know what they are"

"Okay. I'm going to take your word for that" I sighed and went into our bedroom. I thought about Jasper. Being with him felt right. But it was wrong. Everything was wrong. Humans and vampires could not be friends. They should never even consider dating. And for me, that was extremely true.

For one, vampires had ruined my life. Two, vampires continue to control and ruin my life. Three, if said vampires found out they would ruin my life further and possibly end it. So, that was a big fat NO for dating Jasper. Besides, as soon as my mission was over, I'd never see him again. So, focus on what you have to do before you get yourself and Cara into serious trouble. I lay on my bed in the dark. I heard Cara come up to bed and she whispered my name but I didn't move.

The next day was muggy and it was hard for me to find things to do, just to keep myself busy. About midday, Cara suggested we pack so if Jasper came round, it would look like we were leaving. By the time school had finished, we were once again sitting, staring into space. A ring at the door signalled our agent's arrival.

"Come in" Cara said, as it had been her who'd opened the door.

"Right, so we're ready to go?" the agent had been instructed to act like a social worker at all times, just
in case any vampires were listening in.

"Yeah" I sounded sad. I was sad. Jasper hadn't even rung me. My mission was failed! A loud bang at the door. I opened it.

"Jasper!" I said, delighted to see him.

"Alice. I heard about your dad. I'm so sorry. What's going to happen?"

"I'm leaving, with my sister. No one here will take in two complete strangers, so we'll be packed off to a care home"

"That's horrible...there has to be another way!"

"The only other way is if someone here will take us in. no one wants to look after random kids! I mean, if our father had close friends, we'd go to them but he travelled too much!"

"Alice. We've got to go," said the agent. She was holding our suitcases and bustling Cara out the door.

"I tried ringing earlier," said Jasper "No one answered"

"We didn't get any calls. We've been here all day" we exchanged a look.

"Wait there" I said. I marched over to the house phone and found the wire. It was unplugged.

"Damn" I muttered.

"Alice, we really need to go"

"Wait a second. I don't think I'll see you again Jasper" he shook his head. The agent pushed past him with Cara.

"Bye" I said, before following. I had just got in the car and the engine was starting when he cried, "Wait!" I rolled down my window, so did the agent.

"Young man, we're very busy and we have to go"

"No, listen. You said, if someone looks after you, you
can stay right?"

"Well, my family can look after you. I mean, we're all adopted so it'll be a snap!" the agent sighed.

"Are you sure your parents will agree to this?"

"Of course! Come over to the house and they'll tell you!"

"Fine" she sighed, sounding every bit the overworked child expert.

Ten minutes later, she left. We were in.
