When I woke up, Neferet was leaning over me.

"Alice, I thought you would know better"

"What happened?"

"What you just experienced was an intense mental connection. It's what happens when two soul mates meet each other and are separated. They can see what the other person sees and feel what they feel"

"Wow" I muttered.

"However I'm afraid that this connection has just doomed you"

"Why?" I said.

"Well, our agents are ordered not to get close to their objectives for two reasons. One it can cause them to blunder their missions but also because it cause intense emotions and they cannot focus any longer. All agents who have this happen to them are no longer of any use to our organization" my heart skipped a beat. I leapt to my feet and turned to run but two hulking vampires blocked my path. They seized me and held me still. She prized open my mouth and poured a sticky liquid down my throat. I could feel my limbs getting heavy. I tried to get away but my legs and arms wouldn't obey me.

"Take her to the cells," said Neferet. The cells. They were where agents were taken before they were executed. I was thrown into the cells but I felt no pain. I couldn't feel anything. My eyes closed.

I woke up. Neferet and another vampire were in the cell. The two males were holding me still again. Neferet was holding a syringe. I struggled. She slapped me sharply and stabbed the syringe into my arm. They dragged me from the cell and outside into the open. It was dark. They chained my arms to a pole in the centre of a courtyard.

"The chemical we injected will cause any sunlight to burn you. When the sun rises, you will burn to death" she turned away from me and left. It looked to be about three am. I had three hours of darkness left. I stood there and soon I felt myself falling asleep.

My skin was stinging. I opened my eyes and saw the sun was up. My skin was smouldering as the sun burnt me.

"Jasper!" I shouted. I looked around desperately. I could see Neferet in a window, watching me thrash.

Alice? Oh god, that hurts. I focused. Could I talk to him?

Jasper? Can you hear me? Help me please! Please help me!

I screamed.

Alice? Where are you?

I'm burning! Help! For a moment, I understood how Cara must have felt, how every single person in history who'd been tied to this pole must have felt. Desperate, eager for death instead of this torment. I gazed around, looking for someone to save me. No one. Everyone was inside. We weren't allowed out when there was an execution. The only people were the vampires watching me burn from the high windows. I glanced at the gates.
Jasper, forgive me please. My skin had stopped blistering and cracks were forming on the blackened skin.

Oh god, it hurt! I moved my head away from the pole and swung it back. I had to stop the pain. I hit the pole and felt a secondary burst of pain but not as intense as the burning. I moved it again and struck the pole again. My vision was fading. I moved once more. The gate seemed to be shaking. One more strike and I would be knocked out. I had to make it count. I held myself ready. The gate shuddered again. I pushed back. The gate burst open. Jasper. A burst of bright light and I was out.
