Edward's POV

No, Emmett why in God's name did you do that? The thoughts I had picked up so far was that the Volturi were always going to bring up their recruitment, with or without any help from our side. They were always going to ask for us to join them, and they were always searching for some way that they could bring out the hundred years of embarrassment, bitterness and anger out on us. And I think Emmett may have just given them the reason. Even though this was Emmett we are talking about, it is who he is and why we love him, but he may have just given them the reason to sentence us all to death.

As Emmett said this I heard Esme squeak in terror, either her thinking what I am now or his use of language I do not know. Carlisle started to pray; therefore I knew his mind was on the same wave as mine.

Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.

His prayer had finished and as he was reciting the whole prayer I knew that he was not so much wishing this for himself but for his family. When staring down death at any moment he was asking for absolution from his ever present God, for all of us. His thoughts had moved through enough in a minute for me to figure out what he was asking for forgiveness for. His turning of the four of us, Emmett's, Esme's and my slip-ups, Rosalie killing them men, leaving Bella, thinking that I had thought he had lost faith in me when we left Forks, left Bella, and finally bringing this down upon the family as a whole. I was watching my father's thoughts I saw as he grasped my mother's hand tightly in his own and he then did something that I have seen him do many times but nobody except the three of us would understand. He rubbed his thumb across the scar of Esme's wrist, the first of the four he had gave her. His thoughts changed from this prayer and everything that was happening around us to his wife's change, he was remembering the pain it caused him to see his one and only writhe in pain. I love you, Esme, he thought determinately.

Hearing this silent, dejected message to his wife that only I would be able to hear, made me forget everything. It was only Bella and I; we hadn't embraced a hundred years ago. I had a lot of time to think about the stupidity of my actions then, how close was I to losing my life and love for ever. I took her into my arms, I didn't care anymore, I didn't care if she dropped her shield, didn't care if I died. If this was my last stand, I was going to have Bella implanted into my mind, forever. My last sight, my last scent was going to be my wife. As I dropped her from my arms I felt a familiar warm hand upon my forearm, I looked up and into the golden eyes of my father. I love you, son, he told me proudly before turning back to the Volturi as I did also.

"You better take that back, Cullen," Aro spat, his narrowed eyes only on Em.

"What part of ‘Go Fuck Yourself', did you not understand?" Emmett scoffed back.

"Very well boy," Aro called, enunciating every word he spoke. His guard and he all dropped into offensive crouches as I saw Carlisle crouch in front of Esme, and each and every one of his sons and my brothers did the same to our respective mates.

Edward, Edward! Alice calls from behind me and I risk a look at her confused face. Look, she implored as she showed me something, it wasn't really anything. It was the same vision that I have been seeing for about a month but fading into darkness in about two minutes. Edward it's just gone blank, she was trying to tell me something. And only did I get what it was when two different inner voices came to me from across the field, Aro and Caius, both thinking the same thing.

What's this?
