On the surface

Summary:
Niam has no one, except the memories of her dead parents. On the surface she seems fine. hardworking, friendly. but she's not. she's upset with herself. And lonely. She needs someone who will look into her soul and save what she has left. Teen rating for darkness...

Notes:
This was exceptionally easy to write. So lots of updates i hope. This is before Bella comes on the scene (and no, Edward is not going to get off with Niam) and before the Cullen's go to Forks.

Over the next couple of days, we had two more sets of unexpected visitors. The first came the day after that unpleasant woman arrived.

"Jasper, social services is here. They want a word with you and Niam, separately"

"Niam's asleep," I told him "I said I'd stay with her"

"So you two have a relationship?" asked a woman, coming into the room. I assumed she was the lady from social services.

"We're friends"

"You were the one who found her after she got beaten up?" she said, sitting in the chair Carlisle had placed in front of me.

"By her crazy abusing adopted brother, yes"

"Are you sure that's what happened? The only people who actually know are the person who did it and Niam herself. How do you know she's not lying to create attention?"

"She's not lying" I responded. I couldn't exactly explain my gift to the lady but there were other reasons I knew she wasn't lying.

"How can you tell?"

"I trust her. She's also one of the most honest people I know and plus, she was abused as a kid and I've seen the look in her eyes when she talks about that. She wants to forget it more then anything so she would not make up something along that topic," I said, feeling angry. Carlisle placed a hand on my shoulder, trying to calm me down. I took a deep breath.

"She's not lying"

"Okay. Now, why do you think that she should stay with you, instead of in a successful foster home?"

"If you are referring to her previous family, because she was abused and there is no way that woman will get rid of her bastard son. She thinks he is an angel. As for in general, she's not going to open up to anyone the way she has to me. And...she needs to be near her family. I know she doesn't want to uproot them again. She feels responsible for her parent's death"

"She told you this?"

"She did"

"Did she tell you why she felt responsible?" she was leaning forward, so interested in every word.

"Yes"

"Can you tell me?" if she lent any, further forward she'd
fall off the chair.

"No" I said, abruptly.

"Why not?"

"Because, she told me in confidence and I promised not to tell"

"This isn't a playground secret Jasper. This could reflect her future. So please, explain to me"

"No. I just can't do that. This is about her past. It is her life and she only tells those she trusts. You want to find out why and you ask her. But I don't expect she'll tell you" I said firmly.

"Fine. So, you do think she should stay here though? Among people she has no relationship with?"

"She trusts us, more then her old foster family whom she also had no relationship with"

"Her siblings are there"

"Her siblings do not change where she would be best suited" she turned to Carlisle.

"You have been caring for her?"

"Yes, I am a certified doctor"

"What was the extent of the damage inflicted on her?"

"She had severe bruising and massive amounts of blood loss. In fact, she was bleeding to death and if I hadn't treated her when I had, she would have died. She also has damage done to her eyes, causing loss of vision which we are gradually improving. A few broken bones, which we have plastered. She is currently unable to leave her bed and is on a steady dose of pain medication"

"You say she is unable to see? Have you not taken her to the hospital?"

"I am as qualified as anyone in the hospital, although it does have the proper machinery. But as I said, she is unable to leave her bed at the moment. Also, the damage to her eyes seems to be healing as her vision is improving. She started being only able to see faint outlines but now she can see details when up close"

"Will I be able to talk to her?"

"Not until she wakes up which won't be for another hour at least. Feel free to visit again for a time to talk to Niam" said Carlisle "Is there anyone else you'd like to talk with?"

"Once I've spoken to Niam, I need to talk to the rest of your children and your wife to see their views. I will also have to arrange a meeting between you and your wife, Niam and her previous foster family, including the son who is accused of sexual and physical abuse, but that may not be for a while if her condition is as bad as you say"

"We'd be happy to accommodate a meeting here for you" I said. It was only because I wanted to make sure that that animal didn't hurt her again.

"Good day Dr. Cullen" she left.

The second visit was a much more welcome one. I'd just returned home from school and had immediately rushed up to see Niam.

"Hey Jasper"

"You're awake! Some of your teachers were inquiring after you today. Wanted to know if you'd be back in any time soon"

"I hope so. I'm going mad here. I really need to get a new CD or something else to do"

"You could learn brail, and then you could read"

"Thanks but no thanks"

"Tell you what, tomorrow's Saturday. I'll pop into Port Angeles and get you some stuff"

"Thanks" the doorbell rang.

"God, if we get anymore visitors, we'll need to open a hotel" Niam thought we didn't get any visitors because we lived in the forest. She didn't get that we lived in the forest to avoid visitors. I was getting ready to tell her my secret soon. I had spoken with Carlisle. He said I could try and keep her in the dark until she left us but was sure she'd notice something. I also had a private thought that even when she left us, I'd like to stay in contact with her but then she'd notice I hadn't aged. He said it was probably best if I told her. I'd consulted with Esme and she was fine with it. Her feelings were incredibly happy towards this girl. A welcome change from her feelings of worry for me after I'd discovered about Alice. I went downstairs (everyone else had gone hunting and Carlisle hadn't returned from his shift yet) and opened the door.

"Hello, I'm Niam's brother, Mark. These are our sisters, Soraya and Safira. Can we see her please? We're not trying to get her to return to the house. We just want to see her"

"Sure. Come in" I led the three visitors upstairs. I noticed that none of them looked particularly like her.

"Jasper, who was it?" she asked when I came in.

"It's who is it. They're still here. They want to see
you" she stiffened. Her siblings came in.

"Sis?" asked Soraya.
