Jacob has always been willing to do anything for Bella. Now Bella is willing to let him do anything for her. Edward is a little more convincing, Jacob a little more usable, and Bella just a little more vindictive. “He left me! No, no, no! How could he do this? How could he leave me? No, no, he can’t leave me! He left me!” she sobbed. “He left me!” Bella choked, caught her breath. Raised her head, eyes glittering. HE LEFT ME.

“Well… uh…” Billy was flustered. It was almost funny. Only Bella’s cold glare kept me from smiling.
“Call me Isabella, please. Suddenly, I’m not at all sure I like Bella anymore.”
I knew how she felt. Like she was a different person. Like ‘Bella’ was too innocent, too vulnerable an entity for her to be anymore. I had felt that way too. Like ‘Sam’ was too fragile, didn’t fit in the frame that my mind and body made any more.
“Isabella,” Billy corrected himself. “As I’ve said, we are here to protect people from those like the Cullens. It is our responsibility to make sure they don’t… hurt people. Because we have a standing treaty with them, and you are, well…”
“Still alive?” she asked coldly.
“Yes. We can only proceed if that is what you wish.”
The room erupted. Angry shouts, furious, mad brawling. And the inevitable. The young ones exploded, Paul first of course, closely followed by Leah, Jared, and Quil. I didn’t have time to see Bella’s reaction, only I could fix this. Leaping from my seat, I let myself split, tear in two and bring together both sides of myself at the same time.
‘All of you,’ I commanded in the double timbre, ‘Out. Now!’
Unable to do anything else, yet straining at the bit to go at Billy and anyone else in their way, their feet dragged them out. The rest, the ones who had kept control of themselves, got up the follow, pulling off their shirts as they went. Jacob alone stayed at Bella’s side, looking nervously between the two of us. He couldn’t hear me, so I just nodded my head. Let him stay. I didn’t want to have to deal with him, and someone would have to tell me what went on while I was out dealing with the others. Kill two vamps in one bite.
Turning around, I loped off to the clearing where the pack waited. ‘Get a grip guys,’ I rumbled, more irritated than anything. ‘We’re gonna’ miss the show because you couldn’t hold it together for a few more minutes.’
‘What the hell, Sam?’ Paul barked, pawing angrily at the ground, his claws leaving deep furrows in the dirt. ‘You’re just gonna let that fly? Let some girl decide what we should do? He’s her boyfriend. You think she’s actually gonna give us the go ahead?’
‘Shut up Paul,’ I snapped, baring my teeth. ‘You weren’t there, you have no idea what she may be capable of.’ I began to pace back and forth in front of the half-circle they had formed.
‘So what? This is federal now? We only make the arrest if the witness is willing to prosecute? This isn’t a justice system, we’rekeeping the world in line. It’s their faultwe’relike this, their fault we’redifferent…’
‘I said shut up!’ I snarled, charging him.
He quickly backed away from my teeth, tripping backwards over himself in an effort to evade me. I felt the fear in him, the respect in all the rest, and it was enough. I turned away and resumed my pacing.
The more I thought about it, the more I thought that, yes, she just might give us Cullen. It was what the elders wanted, why Billy had invited her. They wanted an out, an excuse to eradicate the Cullen’s without repercussion from any treaty. She was the key to their problems; all she had to do was say yes.
