On Friday morning I woke up feeling almost completely normal, just like Alice had predicted. I slept until about nine, so when I woke up Charlie was already gone. Edward had stayed in my bed next to me all night and was looking down at me with a relieved expression. It was the first time I had slept through the night in four days.
“Feeling better?” he asked with a huge grin on his beautiful face. I wrapped my arms around his marble neck and pulled my face closer to his. I pressed my lips against his and breathed in his intoxicating scent, making my head swirl. “I take that as a yes,” Edward mumbled around my lips. He stopped suddenly and pulled me into a sitting position, apparently decided I had past my limit for my current weakened state. “You should eat some breakfast.”
“Good, I’m hungry,” I said, surprising myself at how true the words were. I hadn’t been hungry in a while. Edward picked me up out of bed, ignored my protests and ran downstairs at an inhuman speed. He set me I a chair at the table and started making my breakfast.
“Are you going to let me get out of the house at some point?” I asked when I was finished with my breakfast. I felt better but I hadn’t been out of the house in a long time and it wasn’t helping me get past the whole sick feeling.
“That depends on where you want to go,” he told me sweetly, pulling me into his lap and wrapping his arms around me.
“Can we go to your house? I want to thank Carlisle and Alice.”
“You don’t need to thank them. They love you too and would do anything for you,” he tried to assure me. I already knew this but I wanted to tell them myself.
“I know they love me, but I still want to thank them.”
“Okay, love. Whatever you want,” Edward said into my hair and then pressed his lips into it. I started to get up and he dropped his arms, letting me go.
“Just give me a human minute to shower and change,” I said as I started up the stairs.
Bella came down the stairs in jeans and a sweatshirt and I smiled at the excited look on her face, happy to get out of her cramped little house. I took her hand and walked her to my car, opening her door and helping her in. I drove slower than usual, enjoying Bella’s obvious relief. I pulled up in the front of the house and went to get Bella’s door. I took her hand again and walked her to the house.
“Bella! I’m so glad you’re feeling better!” Alice had been waiting for us just inside the door. She threw her arms around Bella and they both looked thrilled to see one another. Esme and Carlisle walked in through the kitchen doors and came over to greet Bella too.
“How are you feeling Bella?” Carlisle asked while his inspecting doctor eyes looked her over.
“Much better, almost normal. Thank you so much Carlisle for being so concerned about me. And Esme too, I know you were worried but I’m fine now, really. And you too Alice, thanks for helping me the other day,” she said with a slightly reddened face. I knew she didn’t like to have people worry about her, even when she was in such a vulnerable situation.
“Don’t mention it Bella, we’re just glad you’re better,” Alice told her in her high, singing voice. Bella’s face was getting redder and redder, so I scooped her up in my arms and ran her upstairs to my room. I sat down on my couch with her in my lap. I wrapped her in my arms and she leaned into my chest, sighing in content.
After a few moments of peaceful silence she said, “I’m sorry for ruining your whole week by making you take care of me.” I froze for a few seconds, taken aback and then held her out at arms length, getting a good look at her truly apologetic eyes.
“Please tell me you’re joking. Please tell me you don’t actually feel bad about getting sick.” Her face got red again and she avoided my gaze. “Bella,” I said her name with an exasperated sigh, “I was going to let the other apology slide, because you were sick, but clearly you have lost your mind. You are human. You get sick and it’s not your fault. Even if it was, I enjoy taking care of you so you still would have no reason at all to feel bad,” I said with finality. She finally looked at me but still felt guilty.
Her beauty was too powerful at that moment, so I couldn’t stop from taking her face in my hands and pressing my lips to hers. She reacted by braiding her delicate fingers into my hair and throwing herself into the kiss. I broke away to let her breath and moved my lips down to her neck. Her scent was far too powerful. It was utterly unfair. I moved my mouth back to hers and tried to control my enthusiasm for her. If I wasn’t careful, I would hurt her.
I heard his thoughts approaching all too late. By the time I had registered the fact that Emmett was running up the stairs, about to barge into my room, he was already a foot from my door. He burst threw the door and Bella jumped, gasped and quickly pulled back, her face bright red and her heart beating faster then it had been when I was kissing her. Oh. My bad Edward, didn’t mean to…interrupt anything, Emmett thought, not having missed Bella pulling back from me and eyeing the way she was sitting on me. I just rolled my eyes and pulled Bella closer, trying to calm her down.
“Bella! You’re back. Sorry I didn’t hear you come in. Nobody ever tells me anything,” he said with a huge grin on his face.
“Yes, she’s back. Was there something you wanted?” I asked pointedly. He had horrible timing, no doubt on purpose. He glanced at Bella, trying to decide to speak out loud for her or to keep the conversation private. Edward, we’re going hunting tonight and wanted to know if you would come, he thought, obviously deciding that I might not want Bella to know this.
“No thanks, Emmett. Tell them sorry but I’ll stay here,” I answered him, not bothering to hide the conversation. I knew Bella would pick up on it anyway and I’d have to explain no matter what. Emmett nodded and left, waving at Bella.
“They’re going hunting, aren’t they?” she asked as soon as he had shut the door. It always amazed me how perceptive she was. I nodded. “You should go. I’m fine Edward. Don’t worry. I don’t want you to be uncomfortable. I’m all better now, so you can go with them.”
“I’m not thirsty Bella. Don’t worry about that, love. I’m not ever uncomfortable around you. I love you too much. I’m not going anywhere today.”
“Are you sure?” she asked with concern in her voice.
“Yes.” I sat and looked into her eyes, trying to find a hint of doubt that would make her afraid. As always, she was far too trusting. “I love you, Bella. More than anything.”
“I love you too, Edward,” she said, leaning into my chest once again. I kissed the top of her head and breathed in her scent, glad that she was back to normal.
