Notes:
Multiple POV - Mainly Bella and Lexie Go easy. I'm still brushing the dust from my writing skills. But I'm always up for some constructive criticism. I wanted to try something new. R&R and let me know if it works?

Lunch.
The best and worst part of the school day. Best, because I don’t have to listen to some idiot drone endlessly about a subject I know well enough to teach, and worst, because the level of noise in a high-school cafeteria is enough to give even the deafest of vampires a headache.

As Edward and I took our seats with the rest of the family, I tried to block out some of the chatter by focussing on what Alice was saying. Something about a new pair of shoes she wanted to buy. Fantastic. Shopping. A topic that would surely bore me to death, immortality be damned.

I decided a little eavesdropping was in order. Surely someone in the room was talking about something more interesting than shoes and cars.

I scanned the room. Hmmm... A new band called ‘The Rising’. Nope. Summer plans. No. Prom dresses. Definitely not.

“Who are they?”
“The Cullens. They’re Dr. and Mrs Cullens foster kids. They moved down here from, like, Alaska, a couple of years ago”

Nothing new. People were always talking about ‘The Cullens’.

Just then, I felt Edward stiffen beside me. Curious, I glanced at him. A perplexed look passed over his face, and I heard him make a soft noise of frustration. He was staring at a girl sitting a couple of feet away from us, and she in turn, was glancing at him over her shoulder. She and the girl next to her were the ones talking about us. Again, I heard a low, frustrated growl escape Edwards throat.

“Don’t they have friends, or something? Why are they sitting by themselves?”
“They don’t mix with anyone else. Besides, they don’t need to socialize, coz they’re all together. Like, together-together”

I snorted. I’d heard this piece of gossip so many times over the past 100-odd years, I usually didn’t even pay attention. But something about the two girls was upsetting my Edward, and that I couldn’t stand for, so I listened on.

Both girls were looking at us now, ‘surreptitiously’ of course.
“The pretty blonde girl, that’s Rosalie Hale, she’s with the big dark-haired guy, Emmet. And the really short girl, with the dark, spiky hair, that’s Alice, she’s with Jasper Hale. The blonde guy. Him and Rosalie are twins.”

“Who’s the guy with the bronze hair? The really dreamy one”

Now it was my turn to stiffen up. After almost 200 years with Edward, as captivated by him as I’d been when I was mortal, I still got jealous. My family, especially Emmet and Esme, thought it was ‘so cute’, though for different reasons. I growled, a soft sound, low in my throat.

“That’s Edward Cullen. He’s drool-worthy, obviously. But him and Bella, the girl next to him, are practically inseparable. It’s a shame really. He could do so much better. Me, for instance”
"She's really pretty though"
"I know, but you can't be pretty, AND interesting. One night alone with me, and he'd forget all about her.."

The last comment was followed by a giggling fit, and I didn’t want to listen to them prattle anymore, especially if they were going to start another discussion about ‘how hott is Edward?’ and ‘why can’t Edward be single’ and ‘I want Edward’. Dozy little high-school tramps.

My boy was still as stiff as a board beside me, glaring at the two inane girls. I laid my hand over his.
“I thought you were the only one,” he said. He shook his head slightly, and continued staring, a strangely intense look in his honey-coloured eyes.
“What do you mean?” I questioned. I was a bit confused, by both his strange words, and by the way he was looking at the girls. Actually, at one of the girls. The one who, by my lack of recognition, I assumed must be the new girl the whole school had been gossiping about. Sometimes I hated vampire hearing. It made avoiding all the pointless gossip almost impossible.
“I can’t hear her” Edward whispered, too low for any of our siblings to hear. They weren’t paying any attention to us, all of them laughing at something, but apparently this was something he didn’t want them to hear. “I can’t hear her thoughts. I thought you were the only one who was silent to me.” He smiled at me ruefully.

I looked over at the two girls again. They weren’t looking at us anymore, and were now deeply involved in a discussion about the upcoming prom with a few of the other girls sharing their table. I studied the new girl (I think I’d heard someone say her name was Lexie) but she seemed normal enough. I don’t really know if I’d been expecting anything else. Her hair was a deep blue-black that couldn’t be natural, but I could hardly condemn the girl for disliking her natural hair-colour. Her clothes were dark, and suited for the ceaseless rain Forks is known for. I really hadn’t been expecting to see anything out of place, but I was worried. It worried me that Edward couldn’t hear her thoughts. Wasn’t that what had sparked Edwards interest in me, so many years ago? What if she caught his interest like I had? What if he got bored with me and went after this ditzy little human girl instead?

I shook myself, trying to clear the dumb thoughts from my head. I must be going insane. Edward and I were made for each other. I was his Bella, no one would ever take my place in his heart, and I knew that. Body and soul, I knew we would be together forever, and we would always love each other with intensity as we had when I was first ‘born’.

Nothing could come between us. Right?
