I watched for signs of Victoria the next couple of days but couldn’t find any. However, the Cullen’s were now staring at me especially Edward who frequently during science would look at me kind of protectively. The other’s were different, like they knew something and were just waiting for my confirmation.

I was sitting in science not really paying attention to the lesson, trying to figure out why they were looking at me like that suddenly, when it hit me. They knew. They knew everything, about my being a Fairywitch, about Victoria, about my never dying.

After class they were still staring and I knew that I had to get this over with or they’d never quit.

“What do you want, Edward?” I was trying to sound annoyed.

“I want to know if you’re ok.”

“Why wouldn’t I be?”

“I was hunting when I caught Victoria’s scent. She hasn’t come after me or my family so I wanted to make sure she wasn’t after you.”

I tried to make my relieved sigh sound exasperated. By now Jasper was standing near his brother. Both were staring at me waiting for my answer.

“Why would you care if she was?”

“Did she come after you?” he demanded.

“Yes, she did but as you can see I’m still fine.”

“We’re going to set up a guard so we can protect you.”

“I don’t need you to. I’m fine; I can take care of myself.”

“No you can’t, Bella!” he shouted.

“Why do you care?” I bellowed back.

“I-I didn’t…I mean..”

“That’s right Edward, you aren’t allowed to care! Now stay out of my business!”

I ran to the bathroom but I wouldn’t allow myself to cry at school where they would see. With the urge to cry almost overwhelming me I decided to ditch the rest of the day.

I looked up and hissed, “What do you want?”

“Are you ok?” asked Alice.

“Peachy”, I replied.

“Bella, I have to tell you how my idiot of a brother feels.”

“Which idiot brother?” I was trying to joke but apparently she wasn’t falling for it.

“You know he still loves you.”

“No, he doesn’t. He told me so.”

“Bella, he lied. He left because he thought you’d be safer, but let me guess, Victoria’s been after you for longer than we know about.”

“Probably.” I couldn’t lie to a girl I used to think of as a sister.

“How long?” she coaxed.

“I saw Laurent at the meadow in October but the wolves stopped him.”

“What wolves?”

“They were these huge creatures. Laurent was afraid but I don’t know why, they didn’t bother me.”

“I’ll mention that to Carlisle. Bella, now we should have someone guarding you so that Victoria can’t hurt you.”

I finally understood why they were doing this.

“No thanks, Alice.”

“What do you mean no?”

“I mean I’ll be fine. Besides, I don’t need any more of Edward’s guilt because another vampire is coming after me.”

“Save it!” I snapped.

The bell rang and I ran out the door leaving behind a very surprised Alice. I’d never been that mean to anyone but she was lying to me and I couldn’t afford to believe her.

I spent that night trying to figure out if Alice had been telling me the truth but I couldn’t see how she was. He’s told me himself that I wasn’t good enough, that he didn’t want me. They were probably trying to help him protect me so that he wouldn’t feel guilty for leaving before he knew that Victoria held a grudge.

The next morning I found Aunt Peggy and Lilia in the kitchen pouring over this huge book.

“What’s that?”

“Spell book”, replied Lilia.

“The council called with a rumor about Fairywitches and we’re looking through this book to see if it has any truth to it.” Said Aunt Peggy.

“What kind of rumor?” My curiosity was tweaked.

“Someone came forward and said that when a Fairywitch gets mad then they lose control of their powers. That’s probably not safe, you know.” Lilia said this in a distracted tone while flipping the page.

“Well, we need to get to school. When we get back I’ll help you look.” I offered this not out of the goodness of my heart but because I really didn’t think I could take another day of thinking of nothing but the Cullen’s.

“Actually Bella, Elsbeth is sick and I’m staying here to help. Is it ok for you to go on your own?” asked Lilia.

“Yeah, I’ll be fine.” This was a great time for me to learn that, while I can’t get physically hurt, I could still come down with a cold. I grabbed the keys and headed out the door.

“Bella! Try to stay calm! At least until we figure out if the rumor is true.” Called Aunt Peggy.

“Kay!” I called back.
