Edward’s POV

WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT FOR? Alice screamed inside my head. She was terrified to say it out loud in case Bella woke up. WHAT THE HELL DID YOU PULL YOUR HAND OUT OF HERS? THERE WAS NO NEED FOR THAT!“I can’t do this Alice,” I whispered, not meeting her gaze or moving closer to her and my sweet innocent Bella. “I can’t…be here.

Edward, Alice’s mental voice said, softer than before. She got up and flitted next to my side, placing her hand on my shoulder. I shook it off. She needs us. Just look at the danger she gets in without us. First, the motorcycles, then the cliff-

I broke Alice off with a quiet yet fierce growl.

What? Asked Alice.

“Motorcycle?” I whispered through clenched teeth.

Oh! Alice mentally flinched. I didn’t tell you that did I? That’s my bad. Sorry. Alice’s voice grew fiercer again. But back to point. She needs us. “Motorbike?” I said louder. Bella stirred in her sleep.

“Shh, you,” mumbled Bella. I couldn’t help but smile but then I heard Alice’s thoughts.

Aw. She controlled her thoughts after a growl and a glare from yours truly.

We can’t stay away. She’s my best friend and the other half of you. Alice was mentally pleading to me now.

I internally sighed.

“I can’t Alice. How many people can say they almost died from a paper cut? What if next time she wasn’t so lucky? I can’t risk it, she’s too precious.” And with that I fled out the room, through the window and into the woods across from Bella’s house.

I took a deep breath of fresh air in and sighed.

My Bella.

My little, defenceless Bella.

How could I just stand by and let her die from something that could have been prevented. Something that wouldn’t have happened if I weren’t what I was.

Uselessly hiding behind a tree, I watched Bella’s house. But in my mind I watched Bella through Alice.

“Oh Bella,” Alice whispered. “Oh my little Bella. How could he do this to you?” Alice hid her face into Bella’s hair.

I growled.

Her Bella?

Since when was Bella hers?

Bella is min-

No.

Bella belongs to Bella and Bella only.

She was mine.

But not anymore.

Just to protect her, Bella only belongs Bella.

And the only way that worked was if Bella believed that she hadn’t touched my heart.

As if that would ever happen, the little – and rarely talkative – voice in the back of my mind said.

I smiled lightly.

The only person to have ever touched my heart and I left her alone.

To be safe.

Or as safe as Bella ever is.

Maybe I was wrong to not let Alice watch out for Bella’s future. If she was in too much trouble, maybe I could come and help her, then disappear into the night, just as a dream.

Or rather a nightmare.

As good as that sounded, I promise Bella and myself I would not interfere. This was to save Bella from a fate worse than death.

By then, my light smile – that should have never have been there – had disappeared.

And with that, I continued to watch Bella sleep as Alice composed herself before Bella awoke.
