Edward’s POV

I stared at Alice as she silently ran to me, from Bella’s room. She ran into my arms, silent sobs rippling through her, making me feel even worse.

After what seemed like forever, she calmed down and looked into my eyes.

“Happy?” she croaked. I shook my head. Her eyes suddenly became glassy as she got pulled into the future.

It wasn’t that far away from now. Bella was lying on the floor, her eyes almost vampire red from crying. She was clutching her sides in pain, the same way I’d seen her doing later, but never before I… left.

She was asleep and she rolled over and onto her side, and onto a pair of scissors that had been left… open…

Before I even realized what I was doing, I’d left Alice on her own and was already in the tree next to Bella’s room. I slid in with ease.

There she was, asleep like in the vision.

I ran and quickly pulled the scissors away.

But not quick enough to get away.

Bella had rolled over and was lying on my feet.

I wanted to pull away, but her warmth was comforting.

I yanked my feet away before anything else could happen.

But something did happen.

Bella woke up.

If I hadn’t yanked my feet away then she wouldn’t have woken up!

I edged into the darkness of her room and she slowly sat up and rubbed her eyes.

Then she focused on me more intently.

“What?” she whispered, croaking. She cleared her throat. “What are you doing here?” I didn’t answer; I was frozen. “There’s no adrenaline. No death-threatening event about to happen. Why you here?”

I couldn’t answer.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t even comprehend what she was saying

Why was she saying that?

Has she seen me before?

What is she going on about?

“Edward, why are you not talking?” she asked, flinching a little at my name. I guess it still hurt her.

She yawned and rubbed her eyes.

I took my chance and made a dash out the window to find Alice at the root of the tree.

What happened there? Alice asked, still shaking a little.

I shrugged and said, “Beats me. But she acted like she’d seen me before.” I continued to walk away and back to my original place in the woods. Alice followed silent, except in her thoughts.

Adrenaline and death-threatening event? What was she on about? She can’t mean– Alice suddenly cut me off from her mind by singing really loudly, sad, lonely songs.

I sighed and Alice looked up, confused.

“What are you hiding Alice?” I asked, annoyed. Alice shook her head and bit her lip.

“I promised Bella I wouldn’t,” she whispered, looking down again.

I groaned, causing Alice to look up again at me, confused.

“I’ve changed my mind,” I whispered to her.

“You have?” she squealed, excitedly. But she had misinterpreted.

I can stay with Bella. I can stay with Bella again!

“No,” I growled, trying to let her down easily. “That’s not what I meant.” Alice didn’t hide how it affected her.

“What?” she cried. I looked away from her torn up face.

“You can’t… We’re not coming back. No. I meant… keep an eye out for Bella. It seems she gets into too much trouble just being herself. I’m sorry Alice. But we’re a bigger threat to Bella than just Bella,” I mumbled, trying to keep myself together.

“That’s no true!” Alice growled, frustration taking over and everything about Bella that she had tried to keep a secret came out.

Her best friend is a werewolf and is in love with her. Victoria is still after her. Laurent almost killed her. Not only had she jumped off a cliff but she bought and rode a motorcycle. Why? For you! she screamed in her head.

Me? How’s this my fault that she chose to jump off a cliff or… ride a motorcycle… or… werewolf,” I ended up growling.

If you wouldn’t have left her, she wouldn’t have gone into the arms of Jacob Black the werewolf, we would have been there to protect her from Laurent and Victoria and Bella only jumped and rode that damn motorcycle because she could hear your voice and she needed you to be there…To tell her not to…To keep her safe… And hold her. Don’t do this to her. Not me, her. Alice was truly begging now.

“Alice, please,” I begged back. “You know this is hard for me too. I’ve made up my mind.”

And I had.
