Jacob did not return for several hours, until near dark. Plans were made. Edward said he would run me to the forest near Jacob’s house, but Carlisle disagreed.

“It needs to be one of the pack, they will recognize your scent Edward, especially Victoria. We want to surprise them.”

“I’ll take her.” Sam said, and Carlisle nodded his head.

I heard the door to the truck slam shut outside, and then a second slam. My body began to shake; I knew Bella had decided to come with Jacob. I tried to scoot farther away from Edward on the couch, but he shifted his body as I did mine. If I hadn’t had my guard up, we would have been touching.

I heard the door in the kitchen shut. From the corner of my eye, I could see the terrified look on Edward’s face. I could feel his hand trying to touch mine, but I didn’t push my guard away from me this time. Knowing what was to come, I wanted to separate myself.

A pretty girl walked around the corner with Jacob. She had brown hair a few shades lighter than my own, and her eyes nearly the same color as her hair. She looked at Carlisle and smiled, and walked over to him to give him a light hug.

“It’s been a long time Bella.” Carlisle said releasing her. Alice, who I had never seen angry in the entire time I’d known her, stayed quiet. I could see her eyes flare when Bella looked toward Edward. Her eyes trailed down to Edward’s hand hovering above my own, and her smile faded. She looked away quickly; I could see her eyes fill with emotion.

In all honesty, I didn’t feel an ounce of pity for this girl. She had the love of the man I needed desperately. If she were to ask him at that moment to be hers again, he would have obliged. I pulled my hand out from under Edwards. I glanced at him, and saw that he was holding his breath. Anxiety written all over his face. He glanced at me with a pleading look, and tried to lay his hand over mine once more. I pulled it away again.

The room was silent, and I could tell Bella felt very awkward. She looked at Alice, who avoided eye contact. I knew they had once been close, before Bella destroyed Edward. Jacob broke the silence, and handed me a pile of clothes and a heavy jacket.

“Here they are. The bathroom is the first door down the hall.”

“Thanks.” I mumbled, trying to keep my voice from cracking. Jacob grabbed Bella’s hand.

“Bella, this is Heaven.” She smiled my way, and I couldn’t help but return it. I could tell she was looking at Edward in her peripheral vision.

Walking down the hall, I felt a small brush of wind next to me, and looked over to see Edward. I tried to shut the bathroom door before he stepped in, but he stopped it.

“Why are you acting this way to me?” He questioned, I saw his eyes get wild when he smelled Bella’s scent.

“I’m not acting any way towards you Edward.” Turning my back to him, I pushed my guard away from my body and began to undress. He grabbed my wrist and spun me around to look at him,

“I need you right now Heaven. I love you.” The tears began to trickle out of my eyes.

“You don’t love me, you love her. I see that more than ever now.” His face contorted.

“She’s not the Bella I left Heaven.” More tears poured out of my eyes as I began to slip her clothes over me.

“That doesn’t change the fact that you love her.” I said.

“I will always love her! But not like I love you! I need you!” He pulled me to him forcefully, and I tried to push him away. He pressed his lips to mine.

“I love you Heaven.” I shoved against him again, still not moving him.

“No you don’t Edward. Stop trying to convince yourself that you do! You love her, and I could tell from the way she looked at you that she still loves you!” I sobbed.

He stepped back.

“Do you think that I would leave you, even if she does love me?” I didn’t reply, and I finished changing.

Opening the door, he grabbed for me again and I flushed my guard around me. His hand slipped over the air.

“Stop it Edward.” I whispered. I could see the hurt in his eyes, and I left him standing there.

In the living room, I took notice that Jacob and Bella were no longer present, and I let out a small sigh of relief. I sat on the couch, and Rosalie wrinkled her nose.

“God you stink!” She said, I laughed lightly. Alice looked at me with question in her eyes, and I glanced away. Carlisle stood up.

“So are we ready to go?”

I nodded my head, and my legs began to tremble. I watched Edward walk back into the room. He began to walk towards me slowly with his head down. I kept my guard around me when he tried to hug me.

“I love you.” He whispered into my ear.

“Be careful.” I told him, and pulled away quickly. Walking out of the house with Sam I began to tremble again. Though I knew I was going to be alright, I knew I would be protected. But I was still scared.

Sam turned to me, “After I change, I want you to climb on my back. Don’t worry about pulling my hair, it won’t hurt.” I nodded my head nervously.

He ran to the forest and in only a few minutes a large black wolf was walking back towards me. Even though I had seen Jacob, it startled me and I took a step back. Carlisle walked out of the house,

“We’ll be nearby Heaven. Don’t worry.” I turned to look at him and nodded my head. I saw Edward stepping out behind him, and we made eye contact for a short moment. Tears welled into my eyes.

Sam kneeled down, and I climbed onto his back. Entangling my fingers into his coarse fur the best I could with my guard around me. I saw his large head turn towards Edward.

“He wants to know if you feel safe?” Edward said

“Yes.” I could hardly hear myself I said it so quietly. I felt him stand up, and I was much higher than I anticipated. I glanced at Edward one last time, and I saw the fear radiating off of all of his perfect features.

Sam ran quickly through the woods. I had to duck a few times to miss being hit from branches that hung low. We ran like this for nearly ten minutes before he stopped abruptly in a small clearing and lifted his nose into the air. Startling me, he let out a long howl. I knew this was too soon, and not how it was supposed to happen.
