Somehow the atmosphere in the room changed, it was still heavy with pain and confusion but there was a distinct hint of hope- I could taste it, smell it, I could feel it.
I nodded. “Yes. It’s me, sweetheart.” I didn’t remove my eyes from his- I was trying to tell him everything with my stare: how much I loved him, how I wish he could understand, how I wanted to spend all of eternity with him, how no matter what I would stay by his side... but how I hoped we could spent forever in heaven rather than in hell.
All of the sudden I found myself in a fierce embrace. Edward crashed his lips to mine and tangle his hand in my hair. I put my arms around his neck and returned the kiss full heartedly, showing as much passion as I could. How could I ever have spent eternity without the feel of his lips on mine? It would have been impossible.
He pulled back after a few more intense kisses, gasping. “It’s really you, love? I don’t understand... you –you died... I saw it all. It was horrendous... Bella, tell me it’s you, tell me that you’re really here.”
I laughed; joy and relief poured through me as I took in what he said. “Did you really think you could get away from me?” I teased. “There was no way I would have given you up, I’m too stubborn, and not even death could stop me from being near you.”
A ghost of a smile graced his face. “I’m glad you’re so stubborn.” All evidence of amusement began to fade as he pulled me close once again. “Bella, so you...you didn’t survive? I saw them... they were... I’m sorry.” He kissed the top of my head.
I looked up straight into his eyes. “It wasn’t your fault, Edward. And no I didn’t, none of us did. But nothing of that matters now... we still have all of infinity together and that's what counts.”
He kissed my neck and sighed. “Infinity sounds good, but I think we should find somewhere else to spend it- I really hate this place.”
I turned my face so that I could place a gentle kiss on his cheek. “We’re going to heaven, where we belong.”
Edward needed help to walk, he was extremely weak. He was thirsty from not hunting in weeks and all the sorrow and pain had really taken a toll. The dark circles under his eyes were very pronounced, and I just wanted to get him somewhere with plenty of wild life so he could hunt and regain some of his strength back.
I held Edward’s waist as we walked out; I closed the door, I never wanted to see this place again, every time I would now think of Charlie’s house it would remind me of the pain it had housed, of all the sobs it would have heard. But like I had said all of that was behind us now, we didn’t have to deal with it anymore. It would no longer haunt us.
Emmett was waiting for us in the same position I had left him in. “Jeeze, took you long enough.” He embraced Edward in a big hug, patting his back in brotherly affection, but easing away when he saw Edward flinch.
“You know Edward; you are going to have to start to curb your dramatic streak. It was fine making Bella go to Italy to save you, but making her go to hell... that's just not cool bro.” Emmett gave Edward another hug.
I laughed. “It’s a fair trade considering how many times he had to save me when I was human. And the trip was worth it, I came to find heaven and heaven I found.”
I looked up and Edward looked down. Our gazes met and everything else was soon forgotten, all that was important was that I now had my angel by my side and soon we would be in heaven where we could spend the rest of eternity making up for the lost two weeks.
Our pace back to heaven was definitely slower as Edward couldn’t run at vampire speed. But I was so anxious to get back to make sure that Alice and Jasper were safe that I made Emmett give Edward a piggy-back ride.
As soon as we entered the forest I was calmer. I kept checking that Edward was ok, making sure he was holding up. We stopped when we smelt dears nearby and Edward was finally able to have something to drink; he gained a bit of his strength back but it would take a little while for him to return to his previous health.
When we reached the house in heaven I couldn’t hear anything, the family wasn’t where they were meant to be, I couldn’t even smell them.
I looked around getting more and more worried. What if Alice hadn’t been as lucky as I had been? What if she was still stuck in hell with Jasper?
“Where is everyone?” Emmett placed Edward next to me and I instantly grabbed his hand, needing to touch him.
“I- I don’t know, do you think Alice is back?” There was always something to worry about. Jeeze, couldn’t I even catch a break in heaven?
Edward started laughing.
“Sweetheart, what’s funny?” I placed my hand on his cheek. Oh no, hell has made him crazy. Why is he laughing?
“Is there a lake near here?” He was still smiling widely.
“A lake?” I was really confused but Edward just nodded. “Umm, I’m not sure. I haven’t had time to look around.”
Emmett started walking forward. “I think there must be one, Edward. I can smell it, can’t you?”
“No, but then again my senses are still too dull from being starved.” I pressed closer and buried my face in his neck- reassuring myself he was fine, or at least he would be.
Emmett kept walking and both Edward and I followed him.
We encountered another forest; this one looked much more like a tropic jungle. As we stepped further in I began to hear voices- the voices of my family.
Emmett picked Edward up once again and ran towards where the noises were coming from, I too accelerated my speed.
And there by the edge of the lake was my family. Alice and Jasper included.
I ran straight to Alice and she wrapped her arms around me. I was so happy to see her that I couldn’t stop myself jumping up and down.
“Alice, you found Jazz.” I was so relieved, so excited.
“Of course I did.” She gave me smug smile. “He can run but he can’t hide. Can you believe I found the fool wandering around in a desert? He was looking for me under the rocks. I may be small but I’m not that tiny.”
We both laughed and with her hand in mine I walked to where Jasper was, he looked a lot like Edward did: weak, tired, vulnerable, and yet incredibly happy to be back.
I gave him a gentle hug before going to Edward’s side; he was sitting next to Rose on the edge of the lake.
I lowered myself to his side and circled his waist with both my arms. He turned his head and kissed the top of my head. I snuggled closer. This was heaven, this right here. Being in the arms of the man I loved, I knew I was finally home, finally in heaven.
