Two days past eighteen
He was waiting for the bus in his army green
Sat down in a booth at a cafe there
Gave his order to a girl with a bow in her hair
He's a little shy so she gives him a smile
And he said would you mind sittin' down for a while
And talking to me,
I'm feeling a little low
She said I'm off in an hour and I know where we can go

A tall blonde soldier walked into a café near the bus station. He was being shipped out in the morning and he didn’t want to be late so he went there and was sleeping in a motel nearby. A petite girl with short black hair came by. She gave him a smile and he grinned back. “Would ya mind sittin’ down for a while and talking to me?” He asked sheepishly. She gave him an apologetic look. “I can’t now, but I’m off in an hour and I know where we could go.”

So they went down and they sat on the pier
He said I bet you got a boyfriend but I don't care
I got no one to send a letter to
Would you mind if I sent one back here to you

He sat in the café waiting for her do get off. “I’m ready.” She chirped and lead him out. He was a little intimated by her openness but he was determined not to let the beautiful girl out of his sight. She lead him to a pier and he got up the nerve to talk to her when they had their legs dangling over the edge.

“ I bet you have a boyfriend, but I was wonderin’ if it wouldn’t cause problems…” he stalled. She giggled at his shyness. “Yes,” she paused looking at his badge, “Lieutenant Whitlock?”

“Jasper.” He said grinning. “Well, Could I send you letters when I’m over seas? I don’t have anyone to send them to. No one to count on me returning…” he drifted off, staring out into the endless ocean. “Well,” she paused, blushing, “You can count on me to wait for you.” He looked at her, into her endless blue eyes. “What’s your name?” “Alice.” She said, looking deep into his hazel green eyes.

I cry
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
Never more to be alone when the letter said
A soldier's coming home

So the letters came from an army camp
In California then Vietnam
And he told her of his heart
It might be love and all of the things he was so scared of
He said when it's getting kinda rough over here
I think of that day sittin' down at the pier
And I close my eyes and see your pretty smile
Don't worry but I won't be able to write for awhile

Weeks after Jasper left, Alice received letters from him. First they came from California. Then they came from Vietnam. He mentioned that he was afraid, but only because he might loose her for ever if he’s gone. Then in the last letter he wrote, he told her that he loved her.

I cry Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
Never more to be alone when the letter said

Alice went to a collage football game. She only went because her mother was worried for her. All she could think about was Jasper. Sometime during his letters, she fell in love. During half-time, a man walked up to the mic and said, "Would you bow for your head for a list of local Vietnam dead." As he spoke, a band played."Mark Wample, Jasper Whitlock..." The list continued, but Alice didn't hear the rest. Her world came to a stop when he read off Jasper's name. Her eyes filled with tears, her heart was ripped in two. She felt as if part of her died. And it did. Her Jasper had died.

One Friday night at a football game
The lord's prayer said and the anthem sang
A man said folks would you bow your heads
For a list of local Vietnam dead
Crying all alone under the stands
Was a piccolo player in the marching band
And one name read and nobody really cared
But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair

Alice wasn't the same after the football game. She wasn't as energetic as normal. She always went into the other room when her mother brought in the mail and she always, always, looked on the verge of crying. Up until the day she died. As she was on her death bed, she was happy, for she knew she would be with her Jasper again soon...
