I gasped, my mind unable to understand why she was doing this. She didn't stop, didn't even pause, and I wasn't even sure she had heard me.

I relaxed myself and let her cry and cry as she kissed me. My lips were tight as I fought back my own instincts. I was getting much better at this, but the sudden flood of emotion had caught me off guard, and my first priority was her safety.

Her kisses began to slow; there was more time between them. Then she placed one, strong kiss on my neck and relaxed. She moved herself even closer to me and I did nothing to stop her. She seemed very content, and who was I – the man who upset her in the first place, my mind answered for me – to ruin such emotion?

We laid that way for at least an hour – for the first time in a very long time, I was not aware of time passing – and I finally heard her breathing and heartbeat slow into a peaceful rhythm. I breathed a sigh of relief.

All I wanted to do was lay there, but I knew I had other responsibilities to take care of. I pulled myself out of her lose grasp, very slowly, and laid her down on the bed, softly. She tossed a bit, and I paused when she did, but I soon was able to get out the door.

I ran down the stairs, and my family was scattered around the living room, waiting. They all looked at me when I entered the room.

. . .Oh, I can't believe it's happening to me. Some people wait a lifetime . . , Alice sang in her head to keep me out. She was smiling at me, though. It was slightly unnerving. This meant it was either good or embarrassing for me. I never knew which at times like these. She was too good at hiding her thoughts.

But she slipped sometimes, and I was hoping something I said would trip her. She was bouncing and it worried me.

“She's fine,” I told them.

“So we heard,” Rosalie hissed. She had heard it when Bella had kissed me. She seemed upset. Very upset.

“Congrats, bro,” Emmett told me. I rolled my eyes at him, but couldn't stop myself from smiling.

“I-,” And then Alice slipped. What she saw shocked me.

Nothing. My sister saw absolutely nothing. That's when I heard them.

If they've done anything, I swear I'll - .

Yes! The war has finally started! I wonder if I'll finally be able to - .

Boys! Stop! We have business to take care of.

They ran fast. Very fast. They were almost as fast as I was, and that frightened me slightly. I knew I would never show it, though. Jasper looked at me, startled by my sudden change of mood.

“We have company,” I told them. I knew of them, and so did Carlisle, Esme and Emmett and Rosalie. But I was worried about Alice and Jasper. Alice couldn't see them apparently and that was a problem. It would be hard for Alice to look for a blind spot.

“Company?” Jasper asked me warily. I turned to Carlisle.

“Werewolves,” I told him. Everyone's eyes widened and thoughts raced. They were quickly at our door in human form.

“Cullens,” one of them called. I walked to the door and opened it, blocking the entrance from them, just in case.

“This isn't your land,” they said. Sam, that was his name. Sam Uley. “But this is your property. Could we speak to you for a few moments?”

Yes, Carlisle thought.

“Come in.” My voice was hard, controlled. They followed me into the house, huddled close together. I rolled my eyes at the sight.

They stood in front of us, not looking uncomfortable at all. Just mad and a bit excited. Jasper stood in front of Alice, Emmett in front of Rosalie, and Carlisle ready to make his move. I stood in front of them, ready to block them for anyone, and possibly from even the stairs. They wouldn't get past me to her.

“Let's just get to it,” one of them yelled. If they woke up Bella, I wasn't going to be happy with them. I narrowed my eyes.

“How long do you plan to keep her, huh?!” He gestured to the stairs. “Just going to have a little fun first? Tease her?” I stepped in front of him. I was ready to restrain him if necessary.

“Come on, leech! Answer me!”

“Jacob!” Sam yelled. Jacob was much taller than I was, especially now, since I was in a crouched position, but I was sure that I could bring him down easily. He came down to my level and placed is face only inches from mine.

“You're sick. Protecting your kill.” He practically growled at me. He was shaking violently.

I won't let him have her! I heard his plan before he could decide to put it into action. I was up the stairs and to her door before he was. But he was right behind me. He didn't phase, and I wondered why, but I was too concentrated on Bella to hear him.

I practically jumped on her and crouched, positioning myself into a protective stance over her. My motions shook and bounced the bed, waking her. She screamed as she saw me and heard me snarl. Jacob didn't help as he came in, still shaking, his eyes wild and furious.

“I'll kill you!” he roared.

“No! Don't hurt him!” And Bella twisted and threw herself in front of me, trying to push me out of the way.

She was too close when he phased.

And I wasn't fast enough.
