This story picks up during Chapter 8 of “New Moon” (after the middle of page 193 to be exact). The morning just after Bella and Jacob went for her first ride on the motorcycle and she falls and cuts her head open. This is my version of what would/could have happened if Bella had a few things altered in her story. Enjoy!

I knew what I needed to do. Now, I just had to figure how I was going to do it. For all I knew, the Cullen’s had left and gone to California. Yeah, right. So the only way I knew how to try to find them would be to go to the only place I knew vampires existed.

I had two choices, Volterra or Denali. Seeing the farthest I had ever been was Albuquerque, and the fact that my mission wasn’t to be killed, I decided that Denali was probably the wiser of the two choices.

That really wasn’t the hardest decision I ever had to make, by far. Trying to find the coven there shouldn’t be all that difficult either. I knew what to look for as far as their features went, because really, that’s all I had to go on. They didn’t know what I looked like, at least I didn’t think they did, so I was pretty positive my immediate arrival would be a surprise.

That is, unless Alice was looking for my future, but for some reason, I didn’t think that was an issue.

Now that I knew where I was going, I just had to find a way to get there. I already knew there was no way Charlie would let me go alone, and I immediately knew the one way he would allow it.

I was taking Jacob Black on a road trip.

That was going to be difficult if I told him the truth on why we were going. So I had to fib a bit. Okay, I had to fib a lot.

“Jake”, I hesitated into the phone. It was early, but I wanted to catch him before he left for school.

“Bella! How’s the head?” I could tell he was smiling as he answered, excited as usual. I could always expect a warm welcome from Jake. My personal sun.

“Sore, but I’ve had worse,” I winced at the scattered memories that fluttered through my head of the many klutzy moments I’ve had over the years.

“Somehow I’m not surprised,” he chuckled his hearty laugh. “So what brings on the welcome so early in the day? Don’t tell me you’re ready to climb back on the beast again already?”

“Um no. What do you have going on for the oh, let’s say, next few days?” I questioned with guilt. I really needed him to do this. I wasn’t sure how we were going to pull this off.

“Well, I’m actually on spring break this week, remember? So I still have some days of freedom left.”

“Are you serious?! That’s great! Um, well that will be perfect. I have the next several days off from school, plus the weekend because of this stupid head wound I inflicted on myself yesterday. So I was wondering if you’d want to go on a road trip with me?” I paused, waiting for my answer. Childishly, I had my fingers crossed.

“Sweet. Sounds fun. Where are we going?”

“Alaska.” I said matter-of-factly.

“Alaska? What the heck is in Alaska?” he chucked again.

“There’s a college I’m thinking of going to in the fall, so I though now was as good a time as any to check it out,” I lied. “You up for it?” Please say yes. For my sanity. I hated lying, especially if it was to Jake. But I needed him.

“To Alaska it is!” he chimed.

“Yeah?” Oh crap. I didn’t want to know what he was going to ask.

“Does Charlie know about this?” Ugh, not that one. “Well, not exactly. I wanted to make sure you could go before I mentioned it to him,” Nervous, I bit my lower lip. “He’ll be fine with it if he’s knows I’m going with you.” Sadly, I knew Charlie would never allow me such a grace if it had been Edward.

“Ah, gotcha. Okay, well how do you want to do this?”

“Let me call Charlie, and I’ll come get you in a couple of hours. I’ve gotta pack a few things. Can you be ready?” My excitement finally broke through my voice and I hope I wasn’t giving him the wrong idea.

“Can do! You better hope Big Red can make the trip!” And I heard the click.

I felt the adrenaline rush through me as I realized I was really going to do this. At least I wasn’t going alone. I had Jake by my side and I knew if he was there, I could very possibly handle what lie ahead of me. Hopefully, Jake would forgive me when he realized I wasn’t going to look at a college. But Jake always looked out for me, so I was going to take my chance that he would understand why I had to do this. But what I was mostly worried about was the resemblance the Denali clan would have to the Cullens. It would be what I needed to recognize them, I just hope Jake didn’t put two and two together. Jake knew of the Quilute legends, but would he finally realize they weren’t just legends? I had to take my chances.
