“Bella? Bella, love?”

I felt Edward’s cold hand brush the side of my face and thumb my cheekbone. It sent a bolt of electricity down the length of my body. My eyes fluttered as his sweet scent swirled around me, sending my senses ablaze. I realized my head was cradled in his lap, we were once again on the new bed in his room. His back leaned against the wrought iron of twisted ivy and roses that adorned the detailing. I gazed at his face, it held a mix of concern and pain.

“Hi.” I managed out with a sigh, a soft smile breaking through. Looking at his beautiful face, even held with angst, I couldn’t help but marvel at his perfection. It never made sense for him to love me, but he did.

“How are you feeling?” Edward grimaced, obviously taking the blame for my emotional state.

“As good as I can be, I guess. Everything just kind of overwhelmed me. I’ve had a lot to take in the last couple of days.”

“I’m sorry that upset you,” his eyes smoldered and he took an unnecessary breath, “Alice was replaying the earlier events in Alaska for me, and somehow the result of watching the newscast didn’t come into affect until you went faint on me.” Edward paused, deep in thought as he contemplated his next words.

“Jacob Black was your friend, much more so than before I left,” he stated, not questioned. His body stiffened as he wretched the next words out.

“I leave you to keep you safe, and you find company in the form of a werewolf. Predicable Bella.”

His head shook in disbelief at the irony, but I didn’t find his statement all that troublesome, except for the fact that my best friend exploded in front of my eyes. In anyone else’s life it would seem supernatural, but in the life of Bella Swan, just about anything is possible.

“Yeah, that wasn’t expected, but you know how things go for me, danger magnet,” I tapped my chest with my finger, looking sheepish.

“Why did you look so angry when Alice relayed that information to you about what happened in Alaska?” I asked. I knew somehow the answer was probably embedded in this brain of mine, but Edward would relay it to me anyways.

Edward’s face went hard and rigid, and he reached his hands up running them through his hair, as they finally maneuvered up to clench the wrought iron bars behind his head. His eyes looked to the ceiling and when he gathered his thoughts he looked back down at me. Hands finally releasing themselves from their hold, he placed them gently on mine which were on my chest above my pounding heart.

“Bella, werewolves are dangerous. As much as Jacob was probably a friend to you,” he questioned the word he chose to use, and continued, “he is unpredictable and not in control of himself, as you have clearly seen that for yourself.”

He paused, waiting for my reaction. Puzzlement caused a furrow in my forehead as I thought about that for a minute. I sat myself up to discuss the motive behind his statement and sat face to face with Edward on the bed.

“Edward, Jacob wasn’t going to hurt me,” I took Edwards hands in mine before I continuted, knowing he always seemed more calm if I was touching him during a serious discussion. “I think he was more angry at the fact that he was being outnumbered three to one. Not to mention the fact that he learned not too long before that what exactly was going on around him, as well as with himself. I’m pretty sure that if my father told me I was going to explode into a werewolf because I was destined to protect my people from vampires, I would be a bit shaken up too. Especially with three vampires staring up at me while I was out in the middle of nowhere.”

I raised my eyebrows at Edward, waiting for him to respond. His face was emotionless, and his eyes were lost in thought as he stared at me. He finally sighed and shook his head.

“Still, Bella, you can’t be around Jacob anymore. He is a new werewolf, and they can’t control themselves, he is a danger to you. I’m sorry Bella.”

I felt myself start to go on the defense as my posture went stiff, pulling my hands from his as I stared into Edwards eyes, which held nothing but blank features. Jacob would never hurt me. Of all people Edward should understand that I was probably more safe around a werewolf than a vampire. At least a werewolf didn’t have the natural instinct to want to kill me everytime I was around. Not that I knew of anyways.

I tilted my head slightly to the side, staring as his expressionless features as I gathered my words.

“Edward, how can you say that? How can you sit here and tell me Jacob is a danger to me, when you know I trust you and your family my own life?” I could feel the sorrow fill me at the thought of losing my best friend. My lip trembled giving away my emotions, and I bowed my head, staring at my fingers as they fidgeted in my lap.

“He was a good friend to me Edward. He held me together when I tried to keep myself from falling to pieces. If it weren‘t for Jacob…” I felt the tears flood my eyes, as one traitorously fell down my cheek. I sniffled and reached to wipe it away, but not before Edward caught my hand to prevent me from doing so, and turned my face to look at him once again.

Remorse filled his features, and I could see the pain my statement had caused him, but he needed to know what it was like without him here. Edward needed to see that he not only left, but he took me with him, and left nothing but a broken shell. Silenced wrapped around us for several seconds before he spoke.

“It will take an eternity to seek your forgiveness for what I’ve done to you Bella. There isn’t a second that goes by that I don’t regret what I did, but I can’t lose you Bella. I can’t, and I won’t. Not again. I’m sorry Bella, but you can’t see Jacob anymore.” Edward’s voice held regret and his face went apologetic.

Then they came, the traitor tears flowed effortlessly down my face. I’m not sure if it was just the discussion we were currently having, or everything that had occurred over the last several days had finally caught up with me. But nevertheless, Jacob was my best friend, and right now he needed me more than ever.

“Edward, I have to see Jacob. I have to know he is okay. I know you don’t approve, but I will see Jacob Black.” He released his hand from under my chin and rubbed his forehead as he closed his eyes, taking a few deep unnecessary breaths. Silence again.

“Okay Bella,“ Edward stated. Then finally opening his eyes to meet mine, allowing the topez pools to swim with compassion. “But, only if I’m with you,“ he finished. “I can’t allow you to be around Jacob without me there. That’s the deal. Alice can’t see you when Jacob is around. I love you too much to lose you again, but too much to deny you anything.” His hand reached up caressing my wet cheek as his thumb brushed across them.

“Thank you Edward.”

I leaned in to kiss him. I paused just before my lips met his, and licked my bottom lip breathing in his sweet scent. Edward quickly closed the gap between us, urgently pressing his lips to mine as he pulled me onto his lap. Our lips moved together fervently as his parted slightly, running his tongue over mine, sending my senses ablaze. Twining his fingers through my hair with his free hand, I instinctively threw my arms around his neck allowing myself as much as I could before he pulled himself away.

Sure enough, Edward was the first to end our embrace and he broke away, pressing his forehead to mine as I took a couple heady breaths and my heart pounded itself back to a normal rhythm.

“I love you my beautiful Bella,” he whispered softly as his hands trailed up and down my spine. I moved to nuzzle my face into the crook of his neck and gave it a soft kiss before placing my cheek against it.

“I will never understand why, but I am grateful all the same. I love you Edward.” I sighed as he wrapped his arms around me. I tried to suppress a yawn, but it escaped as I stifled it with my hand.

“Oh Bella, it is I who deserves nothing good that you bestow upon me, but somehow I have been given the honor of your love. But enough talking for now, you’re tired, the last few days have taken a toll on you. I think it’s best you rest for the moment.”

Edward reached for the corner of the comforter and pulled it back in a quick sweep, giving me access to the pillow and cotton sheets. I glanced up at him and he gave me his crooked smile as he sat me up and slid himself off the bed. I wiggled my way in between the two sheets and Edward pulled the bedding up tucking it around me like a burrito then sliding himself next to my side on top of the comforter. Softly he pulled the hair away from my neck, giving it a cool kiss, before lulling me to sleep humming my lullaby I had not heard in months. It was the first time I had slept peacefully and silently since he had left.
