Chapter Two: Tall, Blonde, Gorgeous and a Bad Tan

I slept deeply all night. Suddenly, I heard a buzzing sound that woke me from my dreamless doze. I awoke with a start, looked at the blinking alarm clock, and silenced it. While getting out of my bed and journeying to the bathroom, I realized that I was still exhausted. The flight from Florida, and surprise party were taking their toll on me this morning.

Washing my face with cold water rapidly woke me up. After brushing my teeth, I took a long shower, and put on the first decent article of clothing I could find in my suitcase. I hadn’t had the chance to unpack yet. Yes, I was procrastinating the inevitable.

At 6:05 I received a text from Alice saying, I’ll be picking you up today! Be ready.

I sighed, replying, K! Just don’t make me late :)

Almost instantly she replied, I won’t. C U in a few *hugs*

I threw my cell phone into my bag, and headed downstairs to make breakfast for Charlie. As I entered the kitchen, I was astonished; Charlie had everything ready.

“Morning Dad.”

“Mornin’ Bells. Had a good night sleep?”

“Sure did. I missed that bed.” I answered, while grabbing toast and spreading some grape jelly.

“There is some coffee on the counter.”

“Thanks! I’m really going to need some today.” I replied, while sipping from my cup.

“Taking Ol’ Bertha to school today?” He asked. I had named my old, beaten down, red truck Bertha on my sixteenth birthday, when Charlie had gifted her to me.

“No, not today. Alice is picking me up.” He nodded.

“Well, I’m heading out. If you-”

“If I need anything, I’ll call you. I know. You baby me too much, Bells.” He smiled, and I walked to the door, watching as he left for the police station. “Take care. Bye Dad.”

“Bye Bella.” I smiled, and waved until his cruiser was out of view.

I turned to go inside, when I saw a bright yellow Porsche from the corner of my eye. Alice parked, and greeted me as I glowered at the shopping bags on each of her petite arms.

“Alice, I know I said don’t make me late, but are you too early. School is,” I looked at my watch, and back at her, “an hour from now.”

“I know.” She answered plainly. I looked at her, perplexed.

“And what are those for?” I asked, pointing at the bags, not really wanting to know the answer. I had known Alice for too long to not know that look in her eyes; it meant only one thing.

“ Well, I can’t let you go like that,” she stated, as she eyed me up and down, “on your first day of school, can I?” Before I said anything, she added, “Don’t worry, you will still be comfortable…just stylish.” Playing Barbie Bella this early in the morning? Was she out to kill me?

Knowing I was not going to win this mêlée, I obliged, and followed her to my room. Forty-five minutes later, I was done. She was right, I felt comfortable and stylish. I wore jeans with horseshoe designs on the pockets, a frilly blouse that covered my problem areas nicely, and a black cardigan. My shoes were conservative with circular medallions on the end. All in all, one of Alice’s plainer looks.

I kept forgetting that all my friends were driving maniac! We both made it to school with plenty of time to spare.

“Hey, guys!” I shouted giddily.

“Bells!” Jake ran, and scooped me up into a tight bear hug.

“Jake...can’t...breathe” He put me down with a mumbled apology, and everyone chuckled. After a few minutes, everyone went to find their classes, while I was left with Edward and Alice.

“Bella, can I see you schedule.” Alice asked demandingly. I handed it to her. She read it. One of her This-Is-Perfect smiles appeared on her flawless face. When I was about to ask what is going on, she squealed, “You have all of your classes with Edward. Except for one.” Handing me the paper, she winked, and left twirling like a ballerina. I turned to look at Edward, and he shrugged. I looked back at my small pixie friend, and heard her say, “See you guys during lunch!”

I filed her peculiar behavior in my head for later reflection. Maybe the reason for it would be made manifest today…

Edward and I arrived to our first class, which was AP Biology. Everything went smoothly. I knew most everything the teacher taught, thanks to the Cullens excellent teaching skills. This class would be a breeze.

Our next class was Trigonometry, a detested subject. I would find a way to suffer through it. It was finally lunchtime, and we arrived at our usual table. Jake and Adrie were already waiting for the rest of the gang. Edward and I went straight to the lunch line where I saw my human friends, Jessica and Angela.

“Bella!” Jessica squealed, “It’s so good to see you, again. How was your summer? I bet it was great. Mine was awesome. Did I tell you that Mike and I are finally going out?”

“Um no, but I’m happy to hear it. I know you’ve liked him for a long time” I replied, giving her a sincere smile. Jessica and Mike had had on and on and off relationship since…well, since I’ve met them, so it really didn’t surprise me.

“Well it was so romantic how he...”

“Hey, Bella. Ignore her; she’s been like that since they got back together. How was your summer.” Angela interrupted Jessica’s romantic rambling.

“My summer was fine. The usual. Yours?”

“It was all right. Hey, what class you have next period?”

“English. You?”

“Same. I’ll see you then.” With that, Angela grabbed Jessica by the arm, and moved to a table where the popular crowd sat. I wonder what that was all about?

After getting an apple and a soda, I headed to our table. The entire group was there, and it was relief to see them again.

We talked and joked about what they did while I was gone. Emmett told me about how Jasper literally played with everyone’s feelings, and while Jacob was sleeping Emmett had shaved his hair off. No wonder it was so short. I liked it better long and glossy.

Suddenly, I felt self-conscious, and looked up. I saw a tall, gorgeous, blond girl walking through the cafeteria. Her skin was unnaturally dark slightly orange, like she was waiting for a bad spray tan to war off. She was not from around here. She was looking toward our table. I wished I could read minds, like Edward. She looked from Alice, to me, to Edward; ogling him like he was some kind of meat. I felt my cheeks burn red hot, and stood up from the table.

“Bella are you alright?” Alice asked in a concerned voice.

I had no clue what to tell her. I decided a lie would be best, “Yeah, I just...I just want to find my next class. I’m not sure where it is, and don’t want to be late. I’ll see you guys after school?” I walked out of the cafeteria. No, I ran out of the dining hall, and almost slammed the door open.

I don’t understand why that girl’s looking at Edward had bothered me. If someone were interested in him, I should be happy, right?

“Ugh!” I groaned in frustration. “What’s wrong with me?”

“Nothing.” I heard a musical voice say. I turned to see that it belonged to non-other than Edward. Great. Just fabulous. “You alright?” I nodded. “Shall we go to our next class?” He gave me that half-crooked smile, and felt at peace again. I gave him another nod, and he escorted me to our next class. We got lost, and barely made it to our seats before the bell rang. We found an empty table where would could sit together. Just as I was settling in, I hear an ominous heel-clicking noise.

Oh no. Please tell me this is all a nightmare. Tell me this isn’t her again.

“Students, this is our new student Ms...”

Yup. It’s her all right.
