Chapter Seven: The Invite

“You know, Tyler is a nice guy. If he asked me to Homecoming, I wouldn’t mind going with him.” I declared, biting Alice's unused apple. I had a grin on my face, satisfied with their reaction.

Alice and Adrie both gasped in shock. Did Edward just growl?

“Hey Bella,” I turned to confirm my suspicion, and instantly regretted my words...

Standing right behind me, Lauren wore a smug victor’s smile. She had overheard everything.

Why did I have to open my big mouth? In a matter of minutes, the whole school would think that Tyler and I were an item.

Should have kept my mouth shut.

“Hello Lauren.” Jake finally welcomed.

“Hello.” She paid him no notice. Continuing, she asked Edward, “I’m throwing a party this weekend. Would you all like to go? It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Exchanging glances, Alice reluctantly replied, “Sure. We’d love to.”

“Great,” Lauren exclaimed. Turning, she muttered, “Oh and Bella, would you be a dear, and ask Tyler for me? Since you two are such good friends.” Her voice was like ice. She smiled, whipping her long, golden locks around, and walked away.

I hung my head in my hands. The others began to laugh hysterically. Well, everyone except Edward. For some reason he looked unsettled.

Maybe Alice knew what was going on with him.

Soon, lunch was over. Edward and I broke off from the rest of the crowd, heading to class. He insisted on carrying my books. I wasn’t that weak, but it was a nice gesture.

Upon entering the class room, everyone, including the teacher, glanced up. The room grew quiet. Had Lauren texted my idiot remark to them all? It sounded like something she would do.

Class was long. I tried to concentrate, failing miserably. Edward would let me borrow his notes to study. Heck, he would probably repeat the lecture for me, word for word.

Finally, the bell rang. While standing up, he said, “I can ask Tyler, if it would be too uncomfortable.”

I looked up, startled, “You would do that for me?”

I thought. “Thanks, but this is something I need to do. You can come with me. That would help my nerves a lot.”

“Alright.” We walked to Tyler’s locker. I was nervous. Every single head in the hall turned, as I walked past them. A fretful humming of whispers trailed behind us.

“Hey Bella! Edward..” Tyler declared, grinning.

“Hi Tyler. Um, Lauren wanted me to invite you to her party on this weekend. “

“Are you going?” He asked.

“Yes.” Edward answered for me. While I didn’t particularly relish the idea, Alice would not be letting me escape this. We both knew that.

“Great. I’ll be there. Hey, can I talk to you for a minute?” His eyes flicked up to meet Edward’s.

Edward stiffened. “Bella, everyone is waiting. We really need to go.”

I silently thanked the stony vampire for the lie. The gang had decided to run to my house today, via the woods.

“Catch me another time, Tyler. Sorry.”

“Alright. See you, Bella.” He waved, voice dejected.

Edward escorted me out to the Volvo. We drove to my house. Upon entering the room, we saw that everyone had already made themselves comfortable.

“Glad to see you feel at home here.” I joked.

“I was hungry, Bells. How could I resist using your key under the eaves when I knew it led to food?” Jacob asked, innocently.

“Jake, you’re always hungry. Besides, my cooking isn’t that great.”

“Enough of this!” Alice declared, “We have a lot of planning, and very little time. “

“What do we have to plan, Alice?” Adrie asked.

“Our outfits for Lauren’s party, of course. I know that she wears obvious knock-offs, but that doesn’t mean we have to stoop to her level. If we’re going to this party, let us do it well dressed.”

My eyes Adrie’s. Adrie and I have a lot of things in common, other than our love for Jake. We both detest shopping. Although she could handle Alice's little feddishes better than I ever will. We both only appreciate watching supernatural sporting events, and have an undying love for books.

Of course Alice would be worried about our appearances. We had long ago learned that it was easier to let Alice have her fun. The little pixie could raise a terrible fuss when she didn’t get her way.

The boys did homework, while Alice roped us into talking about patterns, stripes, and color.. It was boring. I didn’t want to think about how much money Alice was going to spend. Still, I tried to act as though I was having a good time.

As the night progressed, I caught Edward staring at me. He didn’t like me, did he? No! That was impossible. Just my mind making things up. Did I want him to like me? Did I like him?
