Chapter Nine: For the Greater Good

Alice POV

Make sure Tyler was invited to the party: Check.

Finalize everyone’s wardrobe: Check.

Initiate plan to get Bella and Edward together: Check!

Creating this plan was not easy. Not one bit. I managed to keep my vision away from Edward, and that alone was difficult. Okay, I’m not going to lie. Edward avoided using his powers on me because I had long ago mastered the art of blocking him. Also, the last time he had pried into my thoughts, Barbie Girl had been stuck in his head for months. It was too easy, really.

I knew I had to work a little harder on Bella. She was so much more perceptive than Edward! She would catch on onto everything I was up to sooner or later. Luckily, I managed to find something that would sidetrack her.

The secret admirer plan was a great idea. It kept her distracted. All the while, I was setting my plan into motion. The fact that Bella didn’t confide her thoughts about the love notes to me was slightly saddening.

I couldn't wait until Edward made up his mind. The conflicting visions were becoming quite annoying. How could he expect me to not intrude? Besides, he asked for my help. I’m giving him my help. Okay, maybe writing love notes that were supposed to be from him wasn’t my job. Maybe I shouldn’t meddle. But the suspense was killing me.

Is it my fault I know that they are soul mates? You should see the look they get in their eyes when they are together. Still, Edward had done nothing! The poor boy lacked initiative. Maybe accounting was a profession he should consider….

In my position, there was no reason I couldn’t write one…or two…notes. However, my brilliant plan backfired a little. Bella believed that her secret admirer was Tyler. Where did she come up with that? Was Edward that unattainable in her mind? To me, he seemed a more likely choice than Tyler Crowley! I thought it would be so obvious. Guess not. Fortunately, this was just a minor setback.

If Edward and Bella ever find out the extent of my meddling, they will kill me. But I figure that after they declare their feelings for each other, they’ll be too busy gazing into each other’s eyes to carry out their baser intentions.

“Darlin’,” Jasper questioned as he looked at me. “Are you alright?”

I gave him a peck on the cheek, saying, “No worries. I was just thinking about everything I have to accomplish before the party.”

“If you say so….” I beamed at him. I could see this all working out perfectly.

I couldn’t wait for the party. Not only because it is one of those few chances, in which I could choose everyone’s outfits – well, Rose had a mind of her own when it came to fashion. However, other fashion-challenged people need all the help they can get. The boys could care less about their appearance, and both Adrie and Bella were total fashion disasters. It was my duty to help them.

Turning, I asked Jasper, “Do you know if Bella asked Tyler to the party?”

“Well, I hope she did.” I responded, as I backed out of the parking lot and drove to the house.

“Why?” He asked incredulous. It was as if he got hit by something very hard. “Don’t tell me you are-”

“Planning something? No.”

“Alice,” he warned.

“Jasper, really...I was just curious.” I know he didn’t believe me, but I couldn’t tell him. At least not right now.

“Alright. You just seemed to be pretty hyped up, considering we’re going to a human party. It shouldn’t be worth all this effort.”

“Jasper, you’re picking up on my emotions that are left over from getting everyone ready. Really, I’m not planning anything.” I leaned back, thinking of my accomplishment in fashion tonight.

Dragging Adrie and Bella up to my room, I had locked them in. This was going to be so much fun! For weeks, I had meticulously planned our wardrobe. The Valentino, Oscar de la Renta, and Prada designers had even let me in on their winter collections.

No one else in the world, let alone Forks, would be wearing what we had. That was the excitement found in fashion. Vampire life could become very tedious, very easily. Clothing styles always changed. There was always something new to do, discover, and design.

After several hours, primping and pulling, we were ready. The dresses I picked were gorgeous, of course. Bella’s was a simple red number with animal print flats. Why the girl wouldn’t wear heels, I’ll never understand. Edward would have a reason to catch her if she let me put strappy shoes on her. That would come in handy tonight.

Adrie’s dress had a deep v-neck. Its pattern was a little more sophisticated, yet the silver peep-toe pumps with bows were just enough to make the dress party-worthy. Add to that a patent yellow clutch, and her outfit was perfect. Jacob was going to have to get me a very large thank-you gift.

While my dress was not perfect, it was good enough for a party thrown by Lauren. Honestly, I had to only look marginally decent. Bella was the one who had to shine tonight. For my plan to work, stunning needed to be her companion.

While Bella squirmed and worried, Adrie bore my fun-making with dignity. Sometimes I wished Bella would take a few notes out of Adrie’s book.. It would do her good.

“Come on Bella, stop wriggling! It will only make this harder.” I warned as I came at her with an eyelash curler. Why were so many people scared of these lovely contraptions?! It wasn’t like it was a weapon of mass destruction.

“Don’t make me hurt you, Bella. I have Jimmy Choo stilettos that match your dress in the closet. Do you want me to use them?” I threatened. She shut up for the rest of the primping. When were people going to learn that in the end I always get what I want?

Soon, my ruminations were interrupted by the car halting. After dragging Bella to the doorstep of Lauren’s home, I rang the bell a couple times.

For a moment, I started to think that I shouldn’t meddle with Edward’s life, and let everything alone. But then I saw the way Edward lovingly took Bella’s hand, and I knew I was doing the right thing. They both looked into each other’s eyes, smiling. Yep, this was definitely the right thing.

Before I rang the door again Ben opened the door and we- Edward- was greeted by Lauren. Her gold dress was very…interesting. It sure left little to the imagination. Even though she was one of the most annoying humans in existence, I felt inclined to give her a makeover. She needed it so much! It was for the good of humanity.

"Hi Edward!" she squeaked as she wrapped her arms around his waist. I saw Bella reluctantly let go of his hand. I wanted to shred Lauren. Patience was a virtue I had to use in this scenario. Unfortunately for Lauren, it was wearing very thin.

I looked up at Bella, and couldn’t help but feel sad. I didn’t need Jazz to tell me that jealousy was rolling off of her in waves. As her best friend/future sister, I would fix it.

"Umm...Hi Lauren" Edward replied.

She whispered, “I have a surprise for you!” Instantly, both Edward and I cringed.

"I am so happy you made it!" she squealed.

“We wouldn’t miss this party. Not for the world.” I said.

“Nice dress by the way.” Adrie added. It was as if she could read my mind! Maybe all my strict fashion rules I had invoked over the years had rubbed off on her.

Thank you. I saw it at a little store in Seattle, and couldn’t resist buying it for the party. If you want I can give it to you later. I can always buy another one.”

“No thanks. It looks way better on you.” I don’t think Lauren caught her sarcastic tone.

“You’re right.” She claimed Edward's hand, and squealed, “Let’s go inside.”

We all complied, but before I got too distracted, I decided to begin tonight’s task.

“Where are we going?” Jasper asked as I began to tow him across the room.

“Quick! Look for Tyler” I whispered loud enough for the both of us to hear.

“Just look.”

“Alice, you really shouldn’t-”

“Please,” I begged with the biggest pout I could muster. He complied, but wasn’t happy about it.

It took us a couple of minutes to reach Tyler. He believed only too quickly that Bella was looking for him. The poor boy actually thought they were an item. She was far and above out of his league. The room was too crowded for my darker nature’s liking, but I strode through the ocean of people. Eventually, I made it to the buffet table, where Bella was standing.

"Hey Bells, look who I found." I announced. She looked up, and almost choked on her drink. She also gave me that ‘What-is-wrong-with-you’ look. I shrugged, and continued to say “I’ll leave you guys alone. Toodles!”

“Alice!” I heard her shout. You’ll thank me later, Bella.

I found Jacob and Adrie dancing, and asked them if they have seen Jasper. They pointed toward the left, but before I could find him, a pair of hands tugged on my arm. Great.

“Alice, have you seen Bella?” Edward asked me.

“Um, I think I saw her near the food, talking to Tyler. Now, if you don’t mind I’m looking for Jasper. I love this song!” I gushed. Before I knew it, Edward dropped my arm, and was gone.

“Hey Alice, have you seen Edward around?” Lauren asked.

“Nope. I have no idea where he is.”

With a ‘humph’ she stomped her way through the crowed. She’ll thank me later, too.

I finally found the love of my endless life near a corner. He was having a hard time dealing with the quickened pulses in the room. Closing the distance, I wrapped my arms around his neck, gave him a peck on the lips, and we began to dance. I couldn’t help the smile that eked out.

Everything was going exactly as I had envisioned it.
