Chapter 7: Your Ex Lover is Dead
Time moved on for Bella and Jacob. Alice and Rose were relieved to know that Jacob forgave Bella and still wanted to marry her. Their plans continued, the bachelor/bachelorette parties went as planned, and the rehearsal party was a success. Both families got along. Charlie was happy with her choice in husband and Renee was happy she had gotten serious with Jacob. Billy found Bella charming and sweet, the perfect wife for Jacob.
Things were not going so well for Edward. After reading the letters numerous times, Edward didn’t know what to do. The letters expressed such raw pain so heart wrenching, and a love so pure and endearing. He knew he had hurt Bella, he had felt a great pain when he had to leave and he had imagined a great loss on Bella’s behalf but he never realized it was so great.
Edward read the letters all over again, especially the last one, realizing that there was still hope for them. No other loved compared, she had said it herself. It was then that Edward concocted a plan he hoped Bella would come back to him.
Edward had kept tabs on Bella through Emmet and Rosalie. He needed to, so that his plan could work. Is only real shot would be the day of her actual wedding, it was cutting it real close but it was a risk he was willing to take.
It was the morning of the wedding. Bella had awoken early in the morning; her nerves had made it impossible for her to sleep. The foreign bed and room hadn’t helped either. Jacob and Bella decided on a small wedding at the Century Wilshire, it was elegant, classy, and simple.
Bella went downstairs to get some breakfast in the café. She sat there thinking about how important today was. She knew that Jacob had forgiven her too easily, she wasn’t sure why but it unsettled her at how easy it was. Jacob was forgiving, but she had expected some time before he forgave her. They never really had spoken or mentioned Edward in each other’s presence. The deal had obviously been broken but Jacob never got into the specifics.
She was enjoying her coffee when she noticed a bronze hair god in the corner of her eye, but when she turned around he wasn’t there. She brushed off the ghost from her past and went to her room.
It was until around eleven thirty, when Bella heard a soft knock on her door. Alice had come early to make sure Bella had everything in order. Alice was excited for Bella and the dress she had worked so hard on. Alice had wanted the dress to be a surprise, Bella had only agreed as long as she didn’t go overboard.
The girls began to get ready, Alice was the maid of honor and Bella had asked Rosalie to be her other bridesmaid last minute. All the girls gathered at Bella’s room, including Renee and Jacob’s sisters.
Anyone who knew Alice would not have expected the dress she created for Bella. The usual integrate details, beading and shapes, she was known for were not so dominant on Bella’s dress. She handed Bella a simple draped dress. However, as soon as Bella put on that dress it transformed. It no longer looked like a simple dress, but a beautifully woven dress that hugged Bella. There was beading all through the hem of the skirt. The soft bodice was sexy but not revealing and the draping accentuated Bella’s figure perfectly.
Rosalie helped Alice with Bella’s hair and makeup as she got ready and soon everyone was dressed and ready to go. There was still about two hours before the wedding and the girls were bored, their excitement had sped up the beatification process immensely.
The room went silent when they heard room service at the door. Alice let the waiter come in with a giant arrangement of roses in hand. Everyone got excited and had Bella read the note out.
“To My Bella,
We are not the same persons this year as last; nor are those we love.
It is a happy chance if we, changing, continue to love a changed person.”
Bella couldn’t explain it but she knew that those roses were not from Jacob.
Everyone gushed at how beautiful the flowers were and how lucky Bella was to be marrying Jacob. She played along until she feigned a headache to get some time alone. The look of worry on Bella’s face hadn’t gone unnoticed by either of her friends. Alice and Rose decided to make sure the wedding would go smoothly and that the guest were finding their seats.
Bella sat in her room waiting for the ceremony to begin. She glanced at the roses and felt a small smile escape her. A loud knock interrupted her thoughts she looked through the peep hole and couldn’t believe her eyes. Edward was at her door.
Bella opened the door and let Edward in, without hesitation.
“Hi,” Edward said, softly.
“What are you doing here?” Bella asked, already knowing the answer.
“Bella, you know why I’m here,” Edward said, sternly.
“Yeah I do. Thanks for the flowers. You should probably take them back,” Bella said, turning away from him.
“Don’t be silly,” Edward said. “They’re meant for you.”
Bella didn’t respond the way her body stiffened when he spoke was obvious for the two.
“Bella, let’s not waste time, you’ve got a wedding to go to,” he said, chuckling.
“Edward,” Bella said, disapprovingly.
“No, you need to hear this. Bella I love you, our love is special, and it’s timeless. After all this time you can’t deny how much you still love me, I know I can’t. When I left, I hurt you so much, I didn’t even realized how much until recently. But even then you didn’t give up on us. When you met Jacob, you still didn’t give up on us. i just don't understand that now that weve found each other you are so hell bent on ruining our love?”
“Edward, how could you possibly know how much I loved you? How much you hurt me? How much I missed you? The tears I cried? How can you compare our love with the love I have with Jacob,” Bella said, fighting back the tears.
“Because I read it somewhere,” Edward said, softly.
“What are you talking about, Edward?” Bella asked, confusion filling her face.
Edward took out a few envelopes from his jacket. Bella recognized them right away; they were the letters Jacob had thrown away.
“Where did you get those? Those aren’t yours,” Bella said, attempting to grab them from his hands, instead he grabbed her hands and kissed her.
“Don’t do this to me, Edward,” Bella said pleading.
“Why not, Bella? Haven’t you thought about our future together? About our wedding day? Haven’t you imagined our baby girl, with your chocolate eyes and my bronze color on her head? Our little boy with my eyes and your soft curls? Hopefully both of them have my grace and not yours. What about our grandchildren? Growing old together? Seeing Italy together? Remember all of our plans? We can still do all of them, please just don’t marry Jacob.”
Bella was in tears now; she couldn’t fight them any longer. She had never admitted it to herself but she had thought about all of this. She spent nights fantasizing what her life would have been with Edward if they had ever reunited.
“Please stop,” Bella croaked out. “Leave me alone, Edward. Please.”
“I can’t do that. I have to know I did everything for our love. I can’t walk away you can’t ask me to do that. I love you, I always have. I know I screwed up, but there has to be a reason our paths have crossed. Why you kept these letters for so long? There are no coincidences in this world; I have to wonder why it was Jacob who reunited us? Who brought these letters to me all unknowingly? Don’t you see, we’re meant to be?”
“No, you don’t see it, do you?” Bella asked, wiping her tears.
She sat on the bed and began, “This is hard for me to talk about because when you left you not only took a part of me, you took a life we could’ve had. I was so sure we would make it, that we would be together forever, but then you left me… I grieved for you, I cried, screamed and kicked, for you. It took me years to get over you. I wasn’t completely over you until I saw you again. Jacob isn’t just my rebound guy, I dated plenty of those. He is my life now he is the one who finished what I had started. I’ve moved on, whether you want to see it or not, I’ve moved on.”
Edward was struggling with Bella’s word, they were so final and true, but he refused to believe it.
Bella hesitated and began again, “That last letter, I found myself regressing to my old ways because I was afraid to love him. Jacob isn’t my savior, he helped me be my own savior, the fact that he was there for the ride made me love him. What happened between was beautiful, something that I will treasure always, but we just can’t be anymore. After we said goodbye, a few weeks back, I couldn’t understand why I was feeling the way I was. I felt a great loss for you, but I was also happy to be with Jacob. I know I’ve made mistakes, but he’s forgiven me, because he now knows what you meant to me. I’ve made my peace that we are just not meant to be. Jacob and I, we just make sense. You and I we just don’t anymore.”
“You pretend to move on but you know that deep down you will never get over me. That life you loss is still here, you can still have it. All you have to do is take that dress off,” Edward said, with a small smile.
“Edward, you’re right, I will always love you, but not like that. I can never forget my first love. But I can’t do that to Jacob, to my family, to his family. Just go, please,” Bella said, needing this to be over.
“That same girl who loved me still exists now, as you reject me. That girl always put others before herself. Bella, I will face it all for us. Just let me, I’m here now,” Edward said
“I never asked you to. Please understand, I choose Jacob. I… I don’t want you,” Bella said, with all her might.
“I don’t believe that. If-when you change your mind, I hope it’s not too late. I’ll be waiting for you,” Edward said, kissing Bella on the forehead.
The truth was Edward was not willing to face the truth just yet, he needed to believe Bella still loved him.
Bella broke down, she hadn’t been prepared to deal with all those emotions in such a short time. A few minutes passed and Alice came knocking.
“Bella, how are you feeling?” Alice asked, softly.
“I’m okay,” Bella said, attempting to clean her tears from her face.
Alice walked in and almost had a heart attack when she saw Bella crying. She helped her get cleaned up and asked, “Bella, are you sure this is what you want?”
“Alice, I need Jacob, can you bring him here?” Bella asked, ignoring the question.
“Bella, that’s-”Alice began, but one look into her eyes for her to realize that Bella needed Jacob. “I’ll be right back.”
Bella was just finishing the final touches of her make-up, when Jacob finally came.
Jacob couldn’t be happier that this day had finally arrived. He was finally marrying the woman of his dreams. After all the drama Edward had caused it was nice for them to go back to the way they were. Jacob was getting ready in his room when he heard Alice come in.
“Jacob, Bella is freaking out. She needs to talk to you,” Alice said, in a hurry.
“Ok, let’s go,” Jacob said, not giving it another thought.
He followed Alice to Bella’s room. He didn’t bother to knock and found Bella lying on her bed.
“Bella, what’s wrong?”
“Jacob, why did you forgive me?” Bella asked, not wasting time.
“What? Bella, I love you, that’s why,” Jacob said, confused.
“Why do you love me?” Bella asked, not meeting his gaze.
“I just do. Bella where is this coming from? Where about to get married. If you’re doubting my love-” Jacob didn’t continue, Bella raised her hand to stop him.
“What did you do with those letters?” Bella asked, confusing Jacob more.
“I left them somewhere. I don’t remember,” Jacob, responded with more confusion.
“Where?” Bella asked, again.
Jacob’s was growing impatient; Bella was acting strange today. How could she doubt him today of all days?
“I don’t remember, it was that night I found out. Bella, why are you bringing this up?” Jacob asked.
“Jacob, why do you love me? What made you forgive me so easily?” Bella asked, turning her back to him.
“Edward is the reason. Are you happy now is that what you waned to hear?” Jacob answered through gritted teeth.
“No, I’m not happy and that was not what I wanted to hear,” Bella responded curtly.
“Jacob, you need to know what happened. I can’t marry you unless you know all the facts. And if you still love me and still want to marry me. I will be more than happy to, because I love you.”
Jacob was taken aback by Bella’s words, never had he heard Bella so sure. He nodded in agreement and she explained.
“Edward and I were lab partners, he had joined my class mid semester junior year, and we quickly became a couple. That summer we spent were one of my best memories of Phoenix, we spent everyday together. Talking about our lives, our futures, and our goals. I know it doesn’t seem like a lot of time to be so sure about our love, but back then I knew we were soul mates. When he left, he took all of our dreams and plans with him. I tried to appear normal but I just needed to get away. When I came here, before I met you, I immersed myself in school and college life. I kept pushing to move on, to forget him. But I couldn’t, he was still a part of me. It wasn’t until recently that I got the closure that I needed. I still loved him, but it wasn’t the same. We were both two different people. It was okay that one nigh to pretend we were those people but I knew we weren’t he just hasn’t seen it yet. He was here, he sent me flowers.”
Jacob had been listening intently to Bella, so when he heard he was near Bella again he flared his nostrils in anger, tensing his body.
“His dedication spoke to me. ‘We are not the same persons this year as last; nor are those we love. It is a happy chance if we, changing, continue to love a changed person.’ We’ve changed but our love hasn’t all we’ve known is that fist love. You and I we’ve changed adapted to one another, we fit. All the barriers have been broken and now we are rebuilding it. I love you.”
Jacob didn’t like hearing the beginning of her speech but he loved the ending. He saw it fit that he express himself as well. “When we met I knew you were broken. I’d like to think it was me who helped you but it was all you, I was just along for the ride, hoping you would notice me. And when you did, I knew I didn’t want to let go. I love you because you’re brave, strong and nurturing. There are a million reasons why I love you. From the way you talk about something you love, to the way you furrow you eyebrow when you’re thinking. I could tell you a list but it still wouldn’t be enough.”
Jacob kissed Bella’s hand and continued, “I know you still love him. I forgave you because despite the love you had for him, I knew you loved me too. What you had with him can’t compare to us. We’ve built ourselves from the bottom up, supporting each other, we’ve created a life together, none of that can compare. I know he was your first love, it’s always hard to move on from that especially if things end the way they did for you two, but I believe in us.”
Jacob had said what Bella needed to hear. Jacob held Bella in her arms until it was time. Alice found them and smiled at Bella and Jacob together, there was no denying they fit.
Edward watched Bella walk down the aisle with his father by her side. He watched her exchange vows with Jacob, promising to love each other forever. He watched her kiss her new husband for the first time. He watched them dance their first dance. He watched Bella throw the bouquet and Jacob throw the garter belt. Each act pushed her away from his grasp he had lost her, there was no going back.
Jacob and Bella spent the weekend in Catalina Island for their honeymoon. They came back and lived their lives happily. They were like most newlyweds that first year, blissfully in love. A few years past, and Bella’s, mind would wonder. She never asked Emmet or Rosalie about him and they never offered information. She was glad that this time around they stuck with her. She had missed them so.
Bella was meeting her editor, Isa, for drinks. Isa was helping Bella write a book about love, lost and self exploration. Bella had been stuck in traffic for half an hour when she finally got to the bar. She had already been late when she was late and called Isa, to make sure she was still there. She didn’t answer, but Bella received a text soon later that said she was at the bar with a handsome stranger.
Bella made her way through the crowd, searching for Isa, when she noticed him. It was happening again, but this time Bella was happily married, and much stronger.
“Bella!” Isa screamed as soon as she saw her.
Bella made her way to Edward and Isa, and watched him giver her small smile.
“Bella, darling, this is Edward, we just met,” Isa gushed.
“Yes, I know. We’ve, met before. In fact we're old friends."
“Really?” Isa asked, turning to Edward for a response.
“Yeah, we used to date.” Edward said, revealing a warm smile.
Bella didn’t need to talk to Edward to know that he was finally in a good place. They had both buried their love for one another, the people they had been since, and the memories they had shared.
